Bucket Seat: Audi RS3 Sportback

Audi's RS stable has a formidable line up with very powerful weaponry in their arsenal, powered by some legendary motors ranging from 5-pots to V8's that deliver enough power to knock the wind out of you on launch. While many do live by the age old Jeremy Clarkson analogy "More Power", sometimes the ones with the lesser power deliver more fun. The latest edition of the Audi RS3 reached our shores earlier this year, still powered by the 5-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine but now delivers slightly more punch than the launch edition which was first reviewed by us in 2023. Funny enough, the test unit I had back then was in Kyalami Green and this new unit was the same colour. Even though it is the baby of the RS stable, does the RS3 still deliver a thrilling drive like the rest of its companions or does it fall short? Having spent a week with it, here are my thoughts.

DESIGN

I'm not going to be like the generic influencers by saying "Audi cooked" or "Audi knocked this one out of the park" or anything to that effect but in all honesty, this car looks stunning. I had my reservations of the exact spec I got as I feel the colour deserved a darker colour rim but it grew on me. The way Audi transformed this car from a regular A3 to something so muscular and aggressive, feels like they took a regular A3, filled it up with Red Bull and creatine, sent it to the gym for a weight session and it came out bulked up ready for competition. When you delve deeper into the design, you can see it's not just a body kit they slapped on but paid intricate detail into the aerodynamics and ventilation of the car. Sharpened proportions and a lower in stance, gives the car a more pronounced presence, the car is wider and squared off in areas that not only add character but also serves a purpose in terms of cooling or ventilation. There are some faux details for added visual effects but most of it is functional. Major new styling cues include the new headlights which feature a new matrix LED design that is customisable from the infotainment screen, a new rhombus grille with honeycomb pattern, angular side pods which flow onto the flared wheel arch. The rear features a twin style spoiler and the rear bumper is a thing of beauty with a pronounced difuser that is finished off in black that houses the twin RS performance exhaust pipes and a reflector dead center gives the RS3 that iconic rally style look. Not much significant changes are on the interior, the racing seats receive some new styling and the steering wheel design has changed.

PERFORMANCE

Now, for a 5-cylinder motor, this one sure is throaty, the vocals are enhanced by those massive performance exhausts, the soft-limiter does fade away once the car has warmed up but the noise in the cabin when going full tilt is just intoxicating. The power which is drawn from the 2.5-litre motor is astounding, with it delivering 294kW and 500Nm of torque. Audi's claimed 0-100km time is 3.8 seconds, my best attempt was 3.9 seconds multiple times, I attribute the extra 0.1 second to my spare tyre I carry around but still, it's mind blowingly fast for such a small car. The on road feel with the various driving modes dependent on your mood add to the versatility of the RS3, if you just want a chilled drive to the shops, Eco mode would do it for you, comfort is for everyday driving that has a chilled mode but the devil within can be woken up at any time. Dynamic mode is where things start to get interesting with the car becoming more vocal and you can feel things start to tension up. Audi have added two performance buttons to the steering wheel cluster for easy access to RS mode and track mode, both of these can be customised in the cars menu settings depending on your driving preference. The Quattro all-wheel drive with RS Torque Splitter distributes power between the front axel and individual wheels on the rear axel as required, it's this function that allows you to drift an all-wheel drive car, having done this on track at the launch was tonnes of fun, unfortunately finding a decent spot to test it out proved to be impossible but I'm glad I got to do it at least once. The balance of the car is just superb and I think this is why I prefer this smaller RS model to its bigger bruts, It's got a tonne of power but its so easy to control, thanks to the Quattro system, it assists to such a great extent that you don't feel like you have to exorcise demons to get it do what you want it to do.

COMFORT

It's a sports car, that means lowered ride height, stiff suspension, low profile tyres mean a very hard and bumpy on-the-road feel but with the RS3, while it did have all of the above, it was quite comfortable. The racing bucket seats were super comfy and not restrictive even for someone my size. I had 4 full size adults in the car and all of them praised how comfy the car was. Audi packed the RS3 with all the regular creature comforts and more, the car is also laden with the latest tech, as mentioned it has the new designed steering wheel with flat top and bottom that has multi-function controls, the MMI interface gotten an upgrade too with so much going on in the various menus, I didn't dabble too much into that as I usually had my phone projected onto the screen. dual-zone climate control, seat heating for the front seats and a panoramic sunroof were just some of the items worth a mention. Heads-up display, which is optional also helps the driver keep their eyes on the road, the RS configurator on ton the in screen menu lets you calibrate the cars settings for your optimal driving preference. The sporty details of the interior really make the car stand out from the normal A3, a mixture of alcantara and leather make up the materials of the interior with robust but great quality plastics serving the rest. The LED Matrix headlights from Audi just keep getting better and better, these ones have various different patterns for your day-time running lights so you can choose to change it whenever the need arises. The sound system has received a nice upgrade with the RS3 coming with a SONOS 3D sound experience system featuring 15-speakers including subwoofers to give you an ultra-premium sound experience, even though the orchestra from the exhausts sounds great, sometimes you want to kick back with some good tunes.

VERDICT

While the RS3 is the baby in the Audi RS line-up, it still remains one of the most fun cars to drive, only rivaled by the TTRS which shares the same power-plant. The car is legend in street racing in our paths and this new one is sure to carry on that status with not only the looks but also the power to prove it. Audi have taken an already great car and tweaked to become even better. When I first drove the new gen RS3 on launch I thought they had a winner, this face-lift just goes to show you what German engineering is all about, the strive for perfection never stops and its justified given how much different this car feels that its predecessor. I love how Audi have integrated some of the new design philosophy into this model by including this like the new steering wheel which is in the all-new A5 which just was recently launched and the MMI interface ensuring that customers who are buying this car are getting the best that they have to offer. My time with the RS3 was short but oh was it sweet.

Bucket Seat: Next Gen Ford Raptor

There is an expression that goes, "when something is so good, it should be illegal" and that is the only way I can describe the Next Gen Ranger Raptor by Ford. Like drugs, this car is addictive, but it will damage your pocket in more ways than one. Lets start with the price tag, starting off at R1,184,100 as base, making it one of the most expensive bakkies on the market, then comes the fuel cost which I will discuss in detail later on in this review, but filling up 80-litres of petrol will cost you nothing short of R2,000 a tank but in saying that, let me tell you there is nothing that will give you the same experience and sensation when driving. I've driven plenty of performance cars in my life, they all have their limitations but performance bakkies? None come close to what Ford deliver, starting with the first generation Ranger Raptor which was powered by a 2.0L BiTurbo diesel which was a bit more frugal on the fuel consumption and it was good but everyone knew it could be better, so Ford took a leaf from the Jeremy Clarkson book and added "MORE POWER", thankfully they didn't use the normal American thinking and throw in a V8 in there, but a more acceptable 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 petrol engine. Spending a week with this beast made me a different person, I was pushing higher weights at gym, running faster and consuming Monster energy drinks by the gallon, and finding every possible dirt road around my commute just so I can kick up some dust and have fun.

DESIGN

Like the previous generation Ranger Raptor, the car isn't just a standard Ranger with some stickers and bigger engine. The Raptor comes with a different body, which is wider, taller and sleeker than the normal Ranger. The grille is bigger and bolder, with a wafer style pattern with FORD lettering in prominent running across it which leads to the C-Clamp headlamps which has the new Matrix LED's that has become the key design focal point of the new Ranger. The front bumper has been shortened like the previous generation Raptor, with a large skid plate finished in brushed aluminium being quite a visual feature of the front of the car. As mentioned, the Raptor is wider than the normal Ranger and the wheel arches are more bulky, with robust black plastic borders which houses those monster BF Goodrich all terrain KO2 tyres with the 17-inch alloy wheels which not only add to the aesthetics of the car but are functional too. Side steps are larger and wider to fit the profile of the body and are finished off in cast alloy. At the back of the front wheel arch is an air outlet, which I presume has to help with dispelling the heat from the engine bay but either way makes it look cool. The rear of the Raptor is more or less the same as the normal Raptor but again, with the increased ride height and shorter rear bumper styling that houses the twin tail-pipes either side of the bumper. the only off putting thing about this is the fixed tow bar at the back, it I suppose its more robust and can pull a higher towing capacity but with the large nature of the van, it just makes it a bit more cumbersome to park. The decals do add another dimension to the overall look of the car, and I feel it would look naked with out them.

PERFORMANCE

Lets talk about that 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 petrol engine for a second, 292kW, in a bakkie?! That is wild and let me tell you something it can kick butt on the road. The day it rolled into my driveway, I had to high tail to Richards Bay which was 180km from home and just my luck there was torrential rain en-route. Throwing caution to the wind, or rain in this case, I said lets see what this Raptor can do. While keeping to all road safety rules and obeying the speed limit, the Raptor navigating through the rain calmly at 120km/h, flying past almost everyone who was doing half the pace due to the extreme weather conditions. The all terrain tyres made sure the Raptor was fixing to the tarmac and to maximise grip I turned on fourwheel drive just incase. I knew then and there this car was special, I even got pulled over by the police not for speeding but for them to have a look at this car, plus the bright orange paint colour didn't make it subtle when on the road. Like the previous model, where this Raptor really shines is when taking the roads less travelled, hitting a sho-left onto any gravel track gives you an indication the thought process in making this car. With locking differentials on the front and rear and FOX live vales adaptive performance suspension makes driving on the dirt like a piece of cake for the Raptor. The amount of grip you get from the all-terrain tyres make navigating the bends having you feel like you're part of the Dakar. Let me tell you, there's nothing better than seeing the dust storm you're kicking up in the side and review mirrors. The adaptability of the Raptor in the conditions is remarkable and when there are tricky situations, there is always measures to make sure you can power through them. From the various driving modes and off-road settings, there is no task too tall for it to overcome. Now, I did mention this thing does get thirsty, be it on the tarmac or on the dirt, the temptation is always there to give it horns, on Sport mode the Raptor gave me 380km from a single tank of 80-litres, not the most fuel economical vehicle but when considering its a performance vehicle, which ones are? And this can do so much more than your usual high powered car, for starters you can climb pavements without worrying about damaging low-profile tyres or scraping your front sil.

COMFORT

Being a bakkie, you'd be forgiven for thinking the interior would be boring but you will be wrong, very wrong. The Ranger Raptor comes kitted with a stunning interior to match the exterior. High quality materials adorn the cabin and the performance style seats give it that extra aggression. The leather trimmed black dash has the aircon vents matching the design of the front grille with high gloss plastic inserts that match the exterior color of the car.h Raptor badges present on the steering wheel and front seats, both seats are electrically adjustable. The 12-inch command center style touch screen infotainment center is the key to everything in the cabin, like the Ranger, the climate controls are separate and have their own dials for the front passenger and driver. There is a wireless charging mat and USB C ports, the Raptor supports wireless connectivity for all mobile applications. The 12.4-inch customizable digital cluster gives the driver vital information on speed, trip info, and a lot more all at the touch of a button from the multi-function steering. With the 10-speed automatic gearbox, the Raptor comes fitted with the "e-shifter" as well as cast magnesium paddle shifters which enhance that racing feel when driving. Being a big vehicle, the Raptor comes fitted with front and rear PDC's as well as front , rear and side cameras giving you a 360 degree view and a trailer hitch view from their high res cameras or you can just utilize the fully autonomous parking feature and let the car park itself. The Raptor is loaded with a host of safety features from the likes of active collision breaking, lane keep assist and active cruise control to the newer ones like braking with electronic booster and front locking diff which is for difficult rocky terrain and trail control for low speed off-road cruising. The rear occupants enjoy performance style seats as well with rear ventilation for the aircon and USB C ports for charging. The Raptor comes fitted with a host of power outlets including a 3-pin Euro spec plug outlet in the bin. Sound, very important for an Indian from Durban, the 10-speaker B&O premium audio system was more than what I bargained for, with the right amount of clarity and bass.

VERDICT

While many might look at this performance Bakkie and think, it's big, bulky and expensive, why would anyone consider it? And I hear you, but it offers something different to the consumer, many have been used to driving around in bakkies but wanted something more from it now have the option and trust me, there are many as when launched, there was a demand for these and still are causing quite a stir on the NAMSA sales figures, so clearly the demand is there. When it comes to performance there is nothing on the market quite like the Raptor, there competitors have tried but the recipe Ford have here is truly something special, its no wonder that their General Manager of Communications go-to reply on most of the social media channels to anyone asking about cars in general is "just get a Raptor".

Bucket Seat: BMW M4 CSL

In celebration of their 50th Anniversary, BMW M Performance has launched a rather special-edition car that highlights their success in high-performance models in the premium midsize segment. "The new BMW M4 CSL blends old-school racing passion with innovative technology to create an inimitable performance experience." The first generation M4 Coupe missed out on this iconic badge but had other "hardcore" derivatives such as the M4 Competition, M4 CS and M4 GTS but when it comes to the CSL badge, you know this car is developed with the purist in mind. CSL stands for "Competition, Sport, Lightweight" and that is exactly what this car encapsulates just like the CSL's of before. With this in mind, BMW have an intelligent lightweight design that restricts this special edition cars DIN Kerb weight to just 1,625kg's, with a standout power-to-weight ratio of 2.95kg's per hp. This provides the ideal platform for  dynamically sublime driving experience according to BMW.

Powering this beast is a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder in-line engine with a power boost thanks to the two mono-scroll turbochargers that tweaks the engine management to produce 405kW and 650Nm of torque! The drive torque produced by the engine is relayed to the rear wheels of the new BMW M4 CSL via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Model-specific mountings for the engine and transmission ensure the engines power is translated into dynamic performance in exceptionally rapid and direct fashion. The firmer connection of the engine and transmission to the car's structure is clearly perceptible, especially under hard driving.

Technology highlights include the BMW laserlights headlamps which are in yellow, bringing another head-turning accent to the front end, other than the massive grilles. It gives the car more of a GT racer look to it, especially with all that added carbon and lowered stance. The LED rear lights of the new BMW CSL are equipped as standard with technology making its debut in a series-produced car. Their glass covers have intricate light threads woven into them which are illuminated using laser technology, bringing a vibrant structure to the surface of the lights. This creates a highly distinctive light signature that is recognizable from a long distance during the hours of darkness. Launch colour for the M4 CSL is in an exclusive Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic, this exterior shade teams up with exposed carbon-fibre surfaces and red accents to create a visually expressive appearance of sporting purity.

As mentioned, this is a limited production car with only 1000 examples being produces worldwide, only 15 of these will be coming to South Africa, with quite a hefty price tag and certain requirements I'm sure. So if you're wanting to add this model to your collection, best get your cheque book out because they will be gone before you know it.

BMW M Festival 2019

After the success of BMW M Festival 2017, South Africa is getting ready for the second installment of this weekend long Beemer Fest. There's no doubt the country shares a strong love affair with the German motor manufacturer and with them investing so heavily in our country with their production plant, it only furthers the bond between the company and the country with this festival. Taking place at Kyalami from the 26th to the 27th of October, visitors to the festival and expect an action packed day, from track demo's, to viewing the latest in BMW's models to hit the shores of Mzanzi.

Confirmed models to be showcased at the show are the much anticipated X3 and X4 M Competition, the performance range topping model of both popular SAV models is sure to be hit in the country. With the X3 being manufactured at Plant Rosslyn it holds a special place for South Africans but these specific M models come fully assembled from BMW's Spartanburg plant in the US. Other models that will surely get the pulse racing is the all-new BMW X6 which is a coupe based SUV variant of the new X5, the all-new 1 Series which many anticipate to be the range topping M135i xDrive. We hope for the crowds that it will be fully kitted out in the M Performance bits.  Another one not to be missed is the introduction to the market of the 340i xDrive. This model is another one that had locals itching, as its the first 3 Series model to feature BMW's all wheel drive system. Personally though, the star attraction of the show has to be the new 8 Series Gran Coupe.

I'm a massive fan of these models from BMW and with the 8 Series Coupe already winning the hearts of many in the country, I cannot wait to see this longer, four door version of the already stunning car. In pictures it looks elegant and classy, in the metal I'm sure it is the same and a whole lot more. Not sure which engine variant will be on display at M Festival 2019 but I won't be surprised if its the M850i xDrive.

Seeing that this is an event that caters for the family, BMW South Africa have a huge line up of live entertainment at the stage area. Artists such as DJ Kent, Goodluck, DJ Fresh, Nasty C, Ricky Rick and Zondering of the Netherlands just to name a few will be hitting the stage to provide you with music and sounds to get you moving on that dance floor. A full line up of the artists and times can be found below.

Tickets for M Festival 2019 can be purchased from bmwmfestival2019.howler.co.za, follow BMW SA on their various social media channels for more info leading up to the event.
