Bucket Tech: HUAWEI Watch GT5 Feature Packed

HUAWEI’s recent wearable releases have taken the tech world by storm and caught the industry off guard. Against all odds, the company is making its mark by continuing to push past the ceiling of innovation. Even its recent wearable release, the new HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series, has lived up to the hype. Having already accumulated eight awards from authoritative voices like Android Authority, Tech Advisor, Wareable, Trusted Reviews, and Yanko Design, the smartwatch has garnered glowing reviews from critics everywhere.

But what are these showstopping features that have the keyboards of reviewers aflutter?

Strikingly Sharp Looks

Leading the charge in both design and technology, Huawei has recently taken a new approach to fusing fashion and functionality in this recent wearable release. It is this new focus that sees the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series masquerades as a dress watch really well.

This stye-focused positioning was commended by Tech Advisor, which also granted the watch an Editor’s Choice Award. As journalist Luke Baker describes it, “The HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro is one of the most stylish and premium-feeling wearables I’ve ever had the pleasure of using …  Aesthetically, it might be my favourite smartwatch to date."

With a choice of different variations between a sharp-edged bezel and a delicate jewellery-inspired ring design, the range makes the watch adaptable enough to match different outfits, occasions, and personalities. For further customisation, users can even switch up the watch’s look with a variety of watch straps and watch faces.

The best of all is the watch’s premium quality materials, far superior to what you would expect at its price point, especially when it comes to its Pro edition’s premium grade design. Fusing nanocrystal ceramic and aerospace-grade titanium alloy, the the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro adds extra-durable strength and a luxe finish to its exterior. As Trusted Reviews highlights in its review piece, "Huawei continues to hit the high notes when it comes to design, offering a sleek and premium design in the GT 5 Pro that belies the price tag.”

Groundbreaking Health and Fitness Tracking

The watch’s overall improvements brought about by the new hardware and software upgrades courtesy of the HUAWEI TruSense System have also raised the bar for accuracy, speed and comprehensiveness of its health and fitness features. As Android Authority highlights at the end of its review, “If you need accurate health tracking, then the HUAWEI GT 5 Pro might just be the watch you’re looking for.”

Yanko Design praises HUAWEI TruSense’s significant improvements to the accuracy of core health metric readings such as heart rate, blood oxygen (SpO2), and respiratory rate, awarding the watch an Editors’ Choice and rating its performance a whopping 4.5/5. As journalist Vincent Nguyen puts it, “By integrating physical and emotional health tracking, Huawei’s TruSense offers an unmatched combination of functionality and precision, helping users stay in tune with their bodies and minds daily.”

Detecting a wide range of health and fitness indicators, the user’s physiological condition and technical performance during sporting activities are now better assessed. Those opting for the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro can also enjoy additional in-depth insights into sports like golfing, diving, and trail running.

Phenomenal 2-Week Battery

With the GT Series, Huawei has consistently been a leader in battery performance. The 5th edition doesn’t disappoint in this area, and the watch lasts between 7 to 14 days, allowing users to track their health stats round the clock, whether they’re sweating it out in the gym or getting their beauty sleep overnight.

Tried and tested by Wareable, journalist Conor Alison highlights Huawei’s continued triumph in this aspect: “In isolation, though, the battery performance here is still very good; we enjoyed just shy of a week’s worth of battery life from the GT 5 even with the always-on display enabled and all of the health features set to continuous monitoring.”

Tech Tablets, applauds the brand’s leadership in battery life capabilities after journalist Chris G’s own experience with the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro, labelling it as “absolutely fantastic” and confirming that it “kills the competition with Wear OS and Apple Watches.”

A Watch for Everyone

Not only do reviewers laud the new watch’s stellar performance and unique designs, but many have also recognised that Huawei is outperforming industry standards and consistently pushing the boundaries of innovation. The best of all? These new features and innovations are available to all – not just Huawei mobile users but also iOS and Android smartphone users as well.

Bucket Tech: Huawei Band 6

With the unforeseen lockdown that had most of us acting like hermits for most of 2020, tech brands had to think of innovative ways to launch their new products, and soon saw the rise of virtual launches where us the media and the public as well could relax in the comfort on their own home and see what the latest gadgets and gizmos their favourite brands would be unleashing into the market, but as the world slowly gets to grips with the virus and the numbers are starting to dwindle, events are slowly making a re-appearance, Huawei being the first tech giant to host an actual event which saw media descend from all parts of the country to the Supersport training fields in Eskom's Megawatt Park on the 3rd of June. In an event that adhered to all Covid protocols, media and celebs got to see the launch of the new Huawei Band 6, Huawei's latest entry level device.

While being an entry level device, this latest wearable from the Chinese mobile giant is packed with features and tech which just cements their status as the largest wearable retailer on the continent. With the increase in demand for wearables thanks to Lockdown, Huawei saw this as an opportunity to create a smart watch that would not only be affordable but also offer the consumer the very best in technology and features. Justin Sun, General Manger at Huawei Consumer Business Group says, “Over the past few years there has been a significant increase in people becoming invested in their personal health and well-being, which has led to a concurrent increase in the demand for smart wearables with health monitoring and fitness tracking capabilities. However, the premium price of these devices is often a pain point for South Africans working on a budget. Huawei addresses this with its HUAWEI Band 6, which brings all the features seen on its smartwatch into the form factor and price of a smart band, making it more accessible it to be a lot more than just a smart band. Huawei’s commitment to innovation, quality and customer service has led to the brand becoming No. 1 in the wearables market in South Africa.”

Some of the features on Huawei's Band 6 are, all-day SpO2 monitoring which is one of the more sort out features on smart watches these days as it provides the wearer with continuous real-time and accurate heart rate, sleep and stress monitoring. It also alerts the user if the resting heart rate is too high or too low. The Band 6 comes with a 1.47" FullView AMOLED Display, making it the first smart band to have a FullView display with a 64 percent screen-to-body ratio, so it can display all the info while still looking stylish. The Band 6 boasts a Two-Week battery life that is thanks to a high-efficiency chipset and smart power-saving algorithm. Tsogo Sun: Suncoast Sunsquare Hotel

When I want to go for a holiday, the last place I'd think to go is in my own city. I mean going for a holiday means stepping away from your everyday life and we generally take that as go somewhere out of town but is it really necessary?

A few weeks back I was given the opportunity to spend a few nights at the Suncoast Sunsquare Hotel, it forms part of Suncoast Entertainment World & Casino. It's a unique hotel seeing that it sits adjacent to the Suncoast Towers Hotel and shares the same amenities with its 5 star neighbor. That alone is a major plus for the guests, I mean staying at a 4 star hotel but everything else is 5 star rated and you don't have to cough an extra cent at all for it.

Lets start of with the location, it's practically the best spot on the Durban Promenade, with it being smack, bang in the middle of it. You have Durban's world renowned beachfront at your door step with the warm, soothing waters of the Indian Ocean greeting you every morning and evening, it doesn't get any better than that. Keen for a run? The hotel's deck steps out onto the promenade which extends from the Point till the Blue Lagoon with further expansion for it planned. The stadium precinct is just behind the hotel, with Kings Park Stadium for the rugby fans,  Kings Park Swimming Pool and the iconic Moses Mabhida just next door.

Moving on to the hotel, as stated before it shares a lot with the Towers hotel, including the reception and triple volume atrium in which a magnificent chandelier hangs. Apon arrival there were smiling faces waiting to help me with my luggage and make my check in, quick and efficient. After a welcome drink being handed my room card,  I was escorted to the room on the second floor, a breath taking sea view welcomed me to my room. Stylish and modern, equipped with everything one with need, including a damn comfortable double bed for a good nights rest.

The room design is very ergonomical and makes use of the space very well and has everything you need in the right places. Adequate cupboards and draws, as well as a safe to keep your valuables, easy accessible plug points to charge your devices, a good hair dryer! (yes this matters to me, my do doesn't just form itself). The bathroom is integrated into the room with the shower and toilet blocked off by means of glass cubicles, this  leaves space for the basin to double as a dressing/ vanity room with its huge mirror. There is also a solid desk for one to do work on if the reason for visit is business related, the hotel provides all guests with free Wi-Fi which is a major plus for many, whether it be for work of personal use.

I don't know about most people but my life revolves around food and this place does not disappoint! The extensive breakfast buffet every morning is astonishing and leave you at guesses on what to try. I know I wanted to try everything on offer but needed a bigger plate, I had to settle to getting up a few times though. In the evening the breakfast restaurant doubles up as Suncoasts signature Jeera restaurant, one of the few Indian restaurants in Durban that offer a world class buffet of curries. From lamb, chicken or seafood, it has everything to suit the most technical taste buds. Speaking to the head chef Sandren Govender, he says he prides himself on only using the freshest ingredients for his dishes, every item is made on and prepared in the kitchen included the wide variety of condiments, some of which include, sauces, pickles and atchars. Asking him which is his favourite curry from the menu, with out a doubt the Millionaires Curry he replied. It's a luxurious curry using the finest seafood all brought together in a creamy spicy gravy, just hearing about it makes ones mouth water. Tip, if you're going for the curry buffet, be sure to leave space for dessert or you might get carried away like I did!

While on the topic of food, the room service menu is quite extensive and serves a variety of meals all through the day. After binge eating, you going to want to work those extra calories off, if the hotel gym isn't enough, as said before you have kilometers of promenade to run on, not forgetting the beach to swim in. If that's not enough, theres morning exercise and yoga classes offered on the Suncoast beach. Bicycles can be hired from the near by bike and bean shop or from the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

After the hectic work out, why don't treat yourself to a Spa treatment on the 9th floor of the Towers. Getting a massage with the endless views of the beachfront is an experience you will not regret! Offering a variety of treatments and massages, the Spa caters for it all. There's a host of rooms available including couples rooms so you and your partner can enjoy it together.

Overall my stay at Suncoast Hotel was an eye opener and an unforgettable one, the staff had a huge part to play in that with them being at my beck and call at any time of day, making sure my every need was taken cared of. Coming back to my opening about holidaying in your own town, at first it didn't seem like much because you seek for something different but after experiencing what we have was on offer, very little can compare to this. Knowing the town was an advantage so I wasn't at a loss on what to do or how to pass my time but the major plus is you don't have to pay a lot for the travel! So often we pay an arm and a leg for plane tickets or the petrol and toll to get to our destination, this on the other hand was down the road! If I need a quick break, I will definitely pop down back to the Sunsquare hotel, maybe even live it up a little and book a room at the Towers, after all it is about spoiling yourself!

A big thank you to Werner and Nicole and the rest of the team from Suncoast Durban for this and Sheena from Tsogo Sun for making this possible.

#MissionSamsung Blogger Challenge: Mission 2

It's the second week of the #MissionSamsung Blogger challenge and after the first mission of the viewing party went well, the competition just got a whole lot hotter! ...well sweatier. In this weeks challenge contestants were asked to download one of the many fitness apps on the Samsung Smart hub and choose from a variety of exercise programmes to partake in. Seemed simple enough right? Well, it was, to a certain extent, here's why.

Most of us go to gym regularly, or at least try to go to gym, as with many of us leading busy lifestyles we find it hard to get in that balance of work and exercise. When we do manage to get into the gym, it is often very busy and one finds them self spending more time queueing to use a machine than actually getting a work out done. Then there is the personal trainers, we see them at the gym, we know they would be helpful in our quest to lose those extra kilo's but it is always daunting to go for a session with them in fear of us dying on the gym floor. What if I told you, that you could have your own personal trainer at home?

Day 1
Well with the fitness app on Samsung's LED Smart TV, that is exactly what you are getting! Once downloaded, all you have to do is input your details and your measurements, including weight. The app then calculates your BMI. From there you can set yourself goals, my goal was to loose a kg of weight in 8 days. It calculated an 8 step program which required me to burn just over 1100 calories with various exercise routines. One step 1 per day, equalled to three 20 minute videos which helped me burn approximately 65 calories per video. The videos were great, each of them starts off with a mild warm up and works their way into a rigorous workout, by the end of it you will be enjoying it so much that you actually forget about the intense workout you're getting!

Day 2
After the success of day 1, I was keen to get onto day 2! Well first I had to get out of bed! You see, my gym routines has remained the same over the past 3 years so I was only focusing on a few areas of my body, with this 8 step program, it focuses on every aspect of your body so the next day, muscles that I never knew existed were telling me hello! Never the less, I soldiered on through the day and was ready for the next step. The cool thing about the app, is that it updates the number of calories you've burned while doing the various videos. So you can track the progress you're making.

Day 3
Getting used to the sore muscles and convincing myself that it is a good thing, getting up on the 3rd day was much more rewarding but after a stressful day at the office, I was not in the mood to continue with the program that was chosen for me but the great thing with the fitness app is that you can break away from the routine and opt to do something else. So I tried out some Yoga, the thing is, if I had gone to the gym, I would NEVER chosen to do Yoga, firstly the classes are at times I am simply not available and by doing it at home in the comfort and privacy of my own home, I didn't have to worry about making an ass of myself trying to pull off some moves. I was quite blow away by the many videos available, from beginner level all the way up to master level. It really was a great experience and will definitely try it again.

The thing that stood out for me was the workout you get from these programmes, I for one never did buy into the whole exercise TV thing and always felt the need to go out to the gym to get the workout you needed. After these past 3 days I can safely say it was more intense than any work I've had before, even though I might burn more calories at gym on a daily basis, I could feel the muscles in my body getting the work, getting tighter and of course, feeling the pain the next day but as I got to realise it was a good pain. The challenge might be over but I am definitely going to continue with the exercise routine for as long as I got the TV.

PS: I opted for the video the trainer which does use up a lot of bandwidth, there are other training programs that do not require video downloads that one can train along with.
