Monster Jam - Durban

This Saturday saw the first Monster Jam event take place on the African continent and to say the entertainment was larger than life was putting it mildly. 8 insane Monster Trucks had the masses at Durban's iconic stadium in awe as they raced around the dirt track and did some mind blowing stunts to get the highest scores from the judges. Being the first event of its kind in the country, it was a new experience for many, with Supersport having aired many of the events in build up to the local event, some had an idea what to expect but nothing could prepare you for the sheer noise, size and excitement that was Monster Jam!

In a near sell out Moses Mabhida Stadium, the arena was ready for the 8 Monster Jam trucks to take center stage, after the much talked about Pit Party where fans could interact with drivers, take pictures and get up close and personal to these monsterous vehicles, seeing them upfront gives you a sense of scale of just how big these cars really are. Taking that into account and seeing them perform leaps of  over 5 meters and other amazing stunts only gives you more appreciation for them.

With each car weighing in excess of 4 tonnes and producing 1,500bhp, the amount of power produced per weight ratio is mind boggling. The sheer noise of them alone will leave you deaf. After the time trials to find out which trucks went around the two way circuit, it was time for the stunts part, to see which trucks could complete the most donuts and most tricks. There were lots of battle scars for most of the trucks, with Gas Monkey Garage losing its front end, Monster Energy collapsing its suspension at the end and Zombie flipping one too many times.

Overall, it was an enjoyable spectacle for the entire family, so much so that even the heavy down pour didn't dampen anyone's mood in the Stadium. With such a great reception for the first ever Monster Jam series in SA, you can only bet its going to get bigger and better next year! So Cape Town and Joburg, don't waste time, get your tickets now for some high octane, monster fun!
