This week saw Mercedes-Benz South Africa officially launch their EV range in the country, at the media day hosted at the Festival of Motoring which is taking place this weekend at Kyalami, the media contingent were introduced to four models from the EQ brand, namely the EQA, EQB, EQC and EQS. The first model from the electric vehicle brand that was introduced to us was the EQC, which was a change from the norm in terms of design and aesthetics from what we were used to from Mercedes-Benz and had the motoring world in awe at what the luxury German brand had on offer. The design was progressive both on the exterior and interior with the brand saying it is Progressive Luxury. These proved to be the foundation for the models that followed. the crossover SUV design proved to be a dynamic move to launch their first electric vehicle, as the market trend has shown that buyers of new cars are heading down this route with combustion engines as well. The bigger chassis allowed Merc to utilize the space more, with their electric design and gave the interior a much more spacious are for its occupants. Looking briefly at the models launched yesterday, we have a brief overview of them.
Mercedes-Benz EQA
The EQA is being launched as the EQA 250 with 140 kW and a range according to WLTP of up to 429 km. The "double-decker" lithium-ion battery, which sits as a structural element within the underbody of the vehicle, has an energy content of 66.5 kWh. In order to meet the high standard of noise and vibration comfort that is such a hallmark of the Mercedes-Benz brand, complex measures were taken to isolate the electric powertrain from the chassis and body. Numerous damping measures enhance this effect.
The EQA 250 will be available in South Africa with a price of R1,169,500. This includes a PremiumDrive Platinum 5-year/100,000 km maintenance plan and an 8-year battery warranty.
Mercedes-Benz EQB
The EQB enriches the successful Mercedes compact car family and is closely related to two models in particular: the EQA, whose advanced drive technology it shares; and to the GLB compact SUV. In South Africa, the all-electric compact SUV will be launched as the EQB 350 4MATIC with 215 kW and a range according to WLTP of up to 423 km.
The EQB 350 4MATIC will be available in South Africa at a price of R1,374,500. This includes a PremiumDrive Platinum 5-year/100,000 km maintenance plan and an 8-year battery warranty.
Mercedes-Benz EQC
By virtue of its muscular proportions, the EQC is classed as a crossover SUV. The extended roofline and window layout with a low waistline and the coupé-like roof recess at the rear visually position it between an SUV and an SUV coupé.
The EQC is being launched as the EQC 400 4MATIC with 300 kW and a range according to WLTP of up to 437 km. The "double-decker" lithium-ion battery has an energy content of 80.0 kWh.
The EQC 400 4MATIC will be available in South Africa with a price of R1,679,00. This includes a standard 5-year/100,000 km warranty, 5-year/100 000km PremiumDrive Maintenance plan, and an 8-year battery warranty.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
Fusing cutting-edge technology, design, functionality and connectivity, the EQS is designed to delight both its driver and passengers. With its impressive proportions, this new flagship in the Mercedes-EQ range embodies progressive luxury and combines apparent opposites into a coherent overall concept. Short overhangs and a long wheelbase create the basis for a prestigious and sporty exterior design.
In South Africa, the EQS range is being launched with two derivatives, including the first local all-electric model from Mercedes-AMG: the EQS 450+ and Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+. Both models’ lithium-ion battery is one of the largest-ever fitted to an electric vehicle and has an energy content of 107.8 kWh. This allows a driving range according to WLTP of up to 782 km in the EQS 450+.
The EQS 450+ and Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ will be available in South Africa from November 2022. The EQS 450+ will cost R2,615,700 and the EQS 53 4MATIC+ R3,410,100. These prices include a PremiumDrive Platinum 5-year/100,000 km maintenance plan and a 10-year battery warranty.
