Bucket Seat: KIA Sonet 1.5 LX CVT

Earlier this year I attended the launch of the new KIA Sonet in my home town of Durban. When it comes to Korean brands, I tend to prefer the offerings from KIA as they have a more European feel to them with that added Asian flair. The Sonet is a subcompact SUV come Crossover that was introduced in 2020, since its introduction it has done relatively well in all markets, offering the consumer an affordable yet versatile compact SUV. With KIA's range of variants in the Sonet line-up, many can choose the ideal one based on their taste and budget. I got to spend a few days with the LX model for a week, turned out to be the very same car I drove on launch, so here are my thoughts on the car.

DESIGN

The Kia Sonet is a striking SUV with a bold and distinctive design, aimed at grabbing attention on the road. Some key design elements include the new Tiger-Nose Grille:which is  Kia's signature design aspect, which is wide and gives the car an aggressive stance. The new sharp LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lights), headlamps, and “heartbeat” LED tail lamps make the Sonet stand out, especially in the top variants. With its muscular body lines, sculpted bonnet, and a wide stance, the Sonet looks larger than it is. It has a slightly raised ride height, roof rails, and faux skid plates that add to its rugged SUV-like appearance. Depending on the variant, the Sonet comes with alloy wheels (up to 16 inches), which give it a sporty look. Overall, the Sonet’s design is youthful and contemporary, making it one of the most stylish subcompact SUVs in the market.

PERFORMANCE

The KIA Sonet is available in one engine throughout the line-up and that is the 1.5-litre, 4 cylinder motor that produces 85kW and 144Nm of torque. this is available in both manual and automatic transmission depending on the model variant. The engine itself, while small is perfect for the chassis, its very responsive, even with the CVT automatic gearbox which I had. Generating faster speeds on the highway does take some time but for the basic city commute it handles like a charm. While other countries do get the DCT automatic, which I generally prefer, I really didn't mind the CVT on the Sonet this time round. Maybe the engineers are figuring to make them a bit more tolerable.: The Sonet is tuned for comfort rather than aggressive driving. Its suspension setup absorbs most road imperfections well, making it a good city and highway performer. The fuel economy is not too shabby, with KIA claiming an average consumption of 6.2, I was averaging more to the mid 7's which wasn't bad considering my driving style is rather aggressive.

COMFORT

I always have high praise for KIA's interiors and that continues it the Sonet as they have done an excellent job with the interior, offering premium touches that rival some higher-end cars.  The interior layout is well thought out with a driver-centric dashboard. The floating 8-inch touchscreen  is the highlight of the dashboard and is seamlessly integrated with the controls. The Sonet has a mix of hard and soft-touch materials, but overall, the fit and finish are impressive for its segment. The higher variants offer leatherette upholstery with contrast stitching, adding a touch of luxury. The Sonet, despite being a subcompact SUV, offers a reasonable amount of interior space. The front seats are well-cushioned and comfortable for long drives. However, the rear seats may feel a bit tight for taller passengers, especially in terms of legroom. It is best suited for four adults for long journeys or five for short trips.  The Sonet offers 392 liters of boot space, which is quite decent for its segment and can accommodate weekend luggage for small families. Kia is known for packing its vehicles with features, and the Sonet is no exception. It is one of the most feature-loaded SUVs in its segment, with even the base variants offering a solid list of equipment. Some standout features include 4.2-inch TFT instrument cluster, Reverse Camera, Bluetooth with voice recognition, Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, Steering wheel-mounted controls, 6-speaker sound system and USB charging points for front and rear occupants.

VERDICT

The Kia Sonet is a standout choice in the subcompact SUV segment, offering a near-premium experience at an affordable price. With its stylish design, impressive feature list, and versatile engine options, it appeals to a wide audience, from young professionals looking for a trendy city car to families seeking an efficient and comfortable urban SUV. While it does face stiff competition, the Sonet’s blend of technology, comfort, and performance makes it a very compelling option. The Kia Sonet is competitively priced, with its base variants being affordable starting at R299,995, while the top-end variants with all the bells and whistles are positioned slightly higher at R484,995.

Bucket Seat: New KIA Sonet

Today I attended the local launch of the face-lift KIA Sonet, the baby crossover/ SUV in the KIA range has gotten better in more ways than one. I always felt KIA was a more premium brand coming out of Korea and after attending today's launch it only cemented my thoughts about them. Seeing the new design language applied across the fleet, giving them a very unique but elegant feel with a modern touch. The Sonet, even at base model has so much to offer, that some of its rivals can't even be called that because of how much more the Sonet has to offer.

The new Sonet comes with two engines to choose from, the 1.5L naturally aspirated motor that has an option of a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic CVT gearbox and the 1.0L Turbo-petrol engine that only is offered with the CVT transmission. The Sonet does come in a few derivatives, each one offering more tech and safety features with it starting at R366,995 for the LX 5-speed manual all the way up to R484,995 for the 1.5 SX CVT model.

There were two options available for us to drive on the launch, first up being the LX 1.5L CVT. The thing that grabs you immediatly when you get into the Sonet is how spacious the cabin is of it, being the smallest SUV in the KIA stable, it really is quite roomy on the interior. The materials, while more plastic and cloth, still feels good and durable, not cheap and tacky like some of its competitors. The engine goes well and unlike other CVT's on the market. The KIA one doesn't seem to struggle when it comes to selecting the right gear for the driver. It's a smooth seamless change that doesn't get your frustrated especially when overtaking or going up hill. The ride quality is smooth and comfortable, even with the newly designed 16-inch steel design rims. Tech wise, the Sonet LX does come with an 8-inch touch screen infotainment unit with wireless mobile app connectivity.

After lunch I got to jump into the 1.0L T EX DCT, this model comes with a more premium interior that includes leather wrapped steering and gear shifter, center consol with arm rest, cruise control and auto folding side mirrors. The key stand out design element is the LED day time running lights for both front and back of the car. These really give the KIA Sonet a stand out presence on the road, especially when viewed from a rear view mirror. The DCT gearbox coupled with the 1.0L Turbo engine is extremely spritey, especially on the open road where it picks up speed quite quickly. The handling is extremely good and and while there is cabin noise, it's not as bad as others on the market.

Overall, first impressions on the new Sonet are good, and as usual the brand has done an extremely good job on delivering another great product for our market. Full review of the new Sonet will come soon once we get it on test. For pricing on the models, see below.

Bucket Seat: KIA GOTG Campaign

Kia South Africa this week launches a unique ‘Test Drive for Good’ campaign in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province, inviting all residents in the province to help raise funds for acclaimed Pietermaritzburg-based humanitarian aid organisation, Gift of the Givers. Open to all residents in the province, Kia South Africa - with its 12-strong dealer network in the province - is committing a donation of R100 to Gift of the Givers for every test drive completed over the Heritage Day weekend in September.

“The Kia brand is celebrating its 25th anniversary in South Africa this year and has had a presence in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province right from the beginning,” comments Gary Scott, CEO, Kia South Africa. “As we celebrate the success of the brand over this period, we want to give back to the communities we serve and, in the spirit of our brand slogan Movement that inspires, Kia wants to partner with the residents of the province – whether they are Kia owners or not – to achieve this goal by blending a brand experience with collaborative fundraising in a fun and highly relevant, localised manner.”

Kia South Africa is a long-standing supporter of Gift of the Givers, individually and as part of Motus Holdings. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Motus Holdings donated four vehicles to further aid the life-saving work Gift of the Givers do. In March 2021, Kia also donated a Sportage 2.0 CRDi EX AWD to the organisation, used primarily by Dr. Sooliman as he travelled across South Africa on various humanitarian missions in execution of the organisation’s mandate.

“As South Africans doing business with South Africans in South Africa, it is critical to us that the Kia brand is trusted and loved by all South Africans,” adds Scott. “Our desire to facilitate change while providing mobility resonates with Gift of the Givers’ position of providing assistance unconditionally and assisting the needy, irrespective of human or animal, race, religion, colour, class, political affiliation or geographic location.”

The ‘Test Drive for Good’ campaign follows a donation of R100,000 to the organisation at the beginning of September. The donation was presented to Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman during Kia South Africa’s 2023 Kia Leadership Conference, where Dr. Sooliman delivered a message of hope and resilience to the 120-plus audience. Gift of the Givers Foundation is the largest indigenous disaster response NGO (non-governmental organisation) on the African continent, with the essence of its presence being to bring hope and restore dignity to the most vulnerable. Its primary focus is on disaster response, hunger alleviation, water provision, healthcare, education and social upliftment.

Kia has 12 dealerships in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province, specifically in Newcastle, Vryheid, Empangeni, Ballito, uMhlanga, Durban Central, Springfield, Amanzimtoti, Port Shepstone, Pinetown, Hillcrest and Pietermaritzburg. All of these dealers, with the exception of Kia Durban Central, will be open throughout the Heritage Day weekend, and collectively have the ambitious target of completing at least 3,000 test drives between Friday, September 22nd, and Monday, September 25th. With weather and other elements coming into play, KIA South Africa have decided to extend this campaign to this weekend, between Friday 29th September till and including Monday 2nd October!

“We believe that our exclusive partnership with Gift of the Givers, itself a Kwa-Zulu Natal-based organisation, will ensure that all funds raised through the campaign are utilised to the direct benefit of the province’s residents,” adds Scott. “It’s as simple as completing a test drive of any Kia model at any Kwa-Zulu Natal Kia dealership, a simple act that guarantees a donation of R100 to Gift of the Givers by Kia. Let’s unite this Heritage Day weekend and collectively create a movement that changes an immeasurable number of lives for the better.”

Bucket Seat: KIA Sportage Diesel

As most of you know, I was given the opportunity to get acquainted with the new KIA Sportage over the December break and while I loved that car to bits, I said what would make it even better was the introduction of a diesel motor to the line-up. Now I'm not saying they took my advice as they probably had this pre-planned but they recently introduced their 1.6L turbodiesel engine in three trims to the KIA Sportage line-up, namely, the LX, EX and GT-Line Plus. I had was given the GT-Line Plus model to spin around the east coast for a week, to see if my assumptions were true about adding a diesel option to their line up and while I don't want to seem smug, I will go through this review limiting my smugness over this car and what it has to offer.

DESIGN

It's just a change in engine so the great KIA futuristic design remains the same, it's quite different from the rest of the KIA line up and to be honest, I quite like how it stems away from the generic SUV look that the current segment has with the competitors. The boomerang LED daytime running lights are a great design feature that give the car more dimension and has many offshoots from it, like housing the main headlamps, linking the slim line grille and contouring the lines from the bonnet and bottom half of the bumper. It also looks from its profile as the starting point of the cars design. KIA's wheel design also is big and bold with large flat surface which does add structural stability to the wheel but also looks great at the same time. The interior is probably one of my favourite from a lot of brands let alone the SUV segment. From the layout to the material choices, it just makes sense and looks the part too.

PERFORMANCE

Getting to the crux of the matter, that 1.6-litre turbo diesel motor, the 4-cylinder unit that is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox produces 100kW of power and 320Nm of torque. The GTLine Plus model that I had came with paddle shifts on the steering. That, for a mid-sized family SUV is the perfect power production and will really blossom on the open roads. Urban driving, of which I did a lot of isn't too bad, as with me it was mainly going to work and back as well as the odd trip to go shopping and enjoy some recreational time with it gave me an average fuel consumption of about 7.3 litres per 100km. Looking at the brochure, KIA claim the Sportage diesel can give you 4.9 litres per 100km, this is probably done under ideal conditions but coming back to my first statement about where you'd really see the beauty of this engine on long distance trips. With good driving, one could easily get over 1000km on a single tank of juice with the Sportage. This with a full cabin and luggage in the boot. I was a bit disappointed to see KIA opting to give this model the normal gear selector and not the radial one I had in the petrol one over the December break. Not that it's a major issue but it looked pretty cool.

COMFORT

I already spoke about the well designed interior but the choice of materials used in the cabin feel super luxurious, from the leather/ suede seats and dash to the high gloss piano black finishes on the dash and center console. The dual screen command center that splits between the instrument cluster and infotainment screen is great and easy to use. Mobile apps are a standard with still a need for cable connectivity which isn't the worst thing as wireless does tend to drain the battery life. There is a wireless  charging pad for the mobile device should that be required. There is two USB ports for the driver and front passenger, both have their own zone climate control with seat heating and cooling. The rear passengers also get seat heating as well as USB B ports which are mounted on the side of the back rests of the driver and front passenger seats. Other standard features for the GT-Line Plus include deluxe scuff plates, alloy pedals, electric tailgate, lane follow assist with lane keep assist, LED interior lighting, panoramic glass sunroof and forward collision avoidance assist. The Sportage has a 54-litre luggage capacity, decent amount for a small family but more importantly for me, can fit a full set of golf clubs with ease.

VERDICT

Overall, the KIA Sportage diesel option is the ideal SUV option for someone like me, the diesel engine offers optimal performance with great fuel consumption. It's by no means a high performance car but for the segment its in and compared to the the competition, it does stand out the best. The creature comforts of the car make it more appealing if the design wasn't enough to by. Even with the model being almost a year old it still manages to turn heads everywhere you go. It's the perfect vehicle to load up the family or a group of friends and go for a much needed road trip.

Bucket Seat: KIA Sportage GT Line

When KIA South Africa said they were handing me the keys to their new Sportage for the Summer break, I honestly couldn't wait till it arrived in my driveway for a month of adventures. The amount of good press and awards the car has received globally in 2022 is testament to the strides the brand has made over the years in not only giving what the consumer wants but going the extra mile in providing the best for their customers. I've always been a keen admirer of the Korean brand, while it shares a lot of similarities with another Korean brand that is sold locally, I always felt KIA had the edge over them in every aspect of the cars. There is a sense of refinement and class that comes along with KIA's, whether you driving the little Picanto or the range topping Sorento, they all give you the same drive and feeling of assurance when you're behind the wheel. So fast forward to December 15th when the car got delivered, soon as the Infra-Red Metallic beauty rolled into my yard, I just knew it was going to be a special December.

DESIGN

The styling of the new Sportage is unique and something that the brand is bold enough to express their new design language with. The eye catcher is the front end with the new boomerang styled daytime LED lights that start off at the bottom of the grille and extend to follow the bonnet line. The indicator lights and LED headlamps fit neatly into the V of the boomerang and gives the car a winged look from the side. The model variant I had was the range topping GT-Line S, which is their sports version that doesn't have any performance enhancements but a rather sleek sporty finish. Key design features to note at the honeycomb styled grille, the brushed aluminum mud skid plate up front, the large 19-inch bi-colour rims that look magnificent when in motion. The body is very bold in design but has clean lines and great contours that make the car look great. I'm a big fan of how they styled the rear, especially the rear window and roof line with the built-in rear spoiler that has a chrome accent that meets at the rear passenger window that is parallel to the window chrome sill. It's very pleasant on the eye when viewing the side profile. The rear lights a more sharp in design that the front, with the angular edge aiming inwards and a solid black bar linking the two tail lights completing the neat look of the rear. The KIA badge is large and prominent in the center which has a delicate crease that just gives the car a more sharper look, one that personifies the name "Sportage". The rear diffuser on the Sportage GT-Line S is also very sporty, with the vertical fins and blacked out. The design of the interior can only be described as spaceship like, from the time you open the door, you are mesmerized by clean modern design, even the seats are impeccably molded and has a contemporary but functional look to it. The rest of the cabin is neatly designed and is driver-centric with most of the controls easily accessible to the driver with a few tricks that I'll chat about later in the review.

PERFORMANCE

There definitely was an advantage to having the car over the duration of a month verses just a week which would have been the norm, just so I could get the full experience of cars performance in terms of fuel economy, power output and general driving assessment. The KIA Sportage is for now, only available in the 1.6-litre Turbo GDI engine, which produces 132kW and 265Nm of torque via means of a gasoline direct injection (GDI). This is mated with a 7-speed DCT gearbox which is standard across the model range with no manual transmission available. I usually tend to have issues with Asian automatic gearboxes and I feel most of them aren't as refined as the German's with it tending to hold revs higher for no reason and the timing in changes being erratic more often than most but with this new 7-speed DCT in the KIA Sportage, it was very responsive, and you could make out the differences in timings depending on which driving mode you were in. While the Sportage had Eco, Normal and Sport, I chose to drive in Smart mode most of the time which sort of picks up your style of driving and adapts the cars performance based on how you drive. Having done just over 4,000km in the 4 weeks s I had the car, I can honestly say it is one of the better cars I've driven in the year in-terms of fuel performance, power delivery and road comfort. Driving to and from Johannesburg had me average 6.2-litres per 100km! While I could never really replicate that average in Urban driving with me hovering either just above or below the 10-litres per 100km mark, I still managed to get over 500km every time I went to fill l up, which was pretty good for the 54 liter tank. The car feels extremely agile on the road, it instills driver confidence especially on the major roads. The drive is soft but capable for most surfaces, having driven through various terrains, I was extremely surprised at how nimble it can be around tight corners and bends at various speeds. In terms of engine performance, this one definitely ticks all the right boxes which is possibly why KIA opted to launch it with just this one variant.

COMFORT

As mentioned before, the KIA Sportage has a very stylish interior with its being modern but also practical. The GT Line seats came with contrasting white stitching and white piping with the added GT-Line logo embossed just below the head rest. The seats were a combination of suede and artificial leather with a firm but comfortable feel, with great lumbar support hat doesn't make you feel the long drives. The seats came standard with heating and ventilation, the latter of which I used quite a bit in the Durban summer. Funny enough the Sportage also came with steering wheel heating which came handy on my trip to the midlands, yes it gets cold there in December! The entire cabin is made from a host of stylish and durable materials that are not hard to the touch and the ones that are, feel of good quality and robust for their needs. Most of the dash and the inlays are finished in a high gloss black plastic, which is sort of the norm now for most manufacturers, even though it's a nightmare to keep them clean with dust being its best friend. The dash on the GT model features a dual screen, with the instrument cluster being a 12.3-inch widescreen display that has incredibly precise animations of the rev and speedo, the colour graphics are dependent on the driving mode selected with each having a cool animation that comes with them. This is matched with a 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment touch screen display for the general entertainment needs, vehicle info and air-conditioning. The car comes loaded with mobile phone apps, but the downside is that the phone has to be plugged in via USB to work.

There is also a multimode control display panel that's neatly located below the center screen that displays the climate control functions but can be switched for entertainment functions as well. This helps to declutter all the need for more buttons, making the cabin look neat and clean. The car host of storage with a wireless charging mat, with a center storage compact that doubles as a cup holder which folds away neatly when not needed. The rear seats are similar design to the front with the faux leather and suede combo, and they get seat heating! first time I've seen this for the rear passengers on a car. They also have rear vents but the temperature is controlled by the passenger climate settings up front. What is cool, is that KIA have opted to put the USB charging ports on the side of the back rest of the front chairs, this allows a better cable reach for the passengers at the back. Another feature which I found odd and clever at the same time was having a buttons on the side of the front passenger seat that allowed the driver to move the chair! The car came with a large panoramic sunroof which was amazing and I loved the amount of natural light that was let into the Moving to the trunk, the Sportage GT Line has an automatic tailgate with a space of 591 liters, this can be increased to 1780 liters when the rear seats are dropped. The rear seats also have a 40:20:40 split which I found great when you just needed to drop the center portion to get long loads in. There is also a power outlet in the boot for you to plug in fridges, pumps or whatever else needs power.

SAFETY

If safety is your concern, fear not as the Sportage is packed with safety features starting with the general ABS, ESC, 6 airbags, Downhill brake assist for those steep hills, Hill start assist with auto hold that prevents the car from rolling on a steep incline and trailer stability assist should you be towing anything. Extra safety features which were standard on the GT Line included the smart cruise control that has lane keep assist, that makes sure the car stays in the lane with help of active steering and warning if you take your hands off the wheel for too long of a period, follow assist with active braking that allows you to set a following distance to the car in front of you, and it will automatically slow down when they do, it will also come to a complete stop if need be. There is also front collision avoidance assist which works with the follow distance to warn you of objects or cars that may come into your path. Another feature I quite like is the adaptive LED headlamps with high beam assist to help you on those very dark roads, with the high beam automatically switching on then either switching off or adjusting when it sensors another vehicle approaching to not affect their view.

VERDICT

Overall, it has been a pleasant December break for me that as made a lot better by the KIA Sportage, I cannot fault it one bit as it served its purpose with flying colours. From being stylish and comfortable, to providing great fuel economy and versatile to suit any excursion. Everyone that drove with me only had pleasant comments about the car and how surprised they were at the offering from KIA and how much was included in the standard price for the car.  This new Sportage model is sure to take over from its predecessor as being a popular model for the medium SUV market, I foresee this GT Line model to be the one that would garner the most interest, just purely from the offerings and looks. It certainly obvious why the car has gotten so much attention worldwide and also the number of awards it has won so far. Hopefully we see KIA bring the hybrid model sometime this year as that would surely be a winner in my books.

Bucket Seat: KIA Carnival CRDI SX 7 Seater

When I was a kid, a MPV's were not very popular in the car market, in fact I struggle to think of one other than the larger mini-buses where the Toyota Hi-Ace and VW Kombi/ Caravelle dominated the market. The introduction of smaller people carriers soon started to creep in with some manufacturers tinkering with the design of these mini-buses but to cater a smaller passenger load, while there was nothing fancy or distinct about these, they seemed to served their purpose of providing a larger vehicle with easy access for passengers and ample of luggage space. As the model evolved, some companies saw an opportunity to create exclusive luxury models of them and it made perfect sense. The cabin was large and spacious, so room was no issue. Instead of having large flat bench seats, they could experiment with larger single seats, and create a super limo MPV, as we've seen in the likes of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and VW Caravelle. KIA has also been a key player in this segment with their Grand Sedona providing this offering to many at a much more affordable price when compared to the to the other two brands, they've recently launch the latest variant of this vehicle in the country and its been renamed to the Carnival and I had the opportunity to spend a week with it, here are my thoughts on it.

DESIGN

The design see's a major shift from the older Grand Sedona with KIA's new design language coming in strong. The car seems to have a lower and wider stance that its predecessor, while you can't escape that distinct MPV look, I have to give props to the KIA design team to add bits and extras to make this model really stand out. Starting with that grille which dominates the front end, finished in chrome it really is a stand out feature of the car and it's where the design for the rest of the car takes shape. The grille isn't even a solid component as its made up of quite of few of these chrome blocks that lead into the front headlamps. This to isn't one component, as its also segmented but all worked into the design as it blends in with the chrome accents of the grille. The day-time running LED lights has this new signature styling which underlines where the lighting pods sit on the front. The air intake for the radiator has a brush aluminum finish with  the front scuff plate having the same detail. Moving onto the side profile, the car has a more flat box shape to it, making it look compact. With a large passenger sliding door that has beautiful chrome pillar to divide the window and door. Its another eye catching feature on this car that adds that extra element of luxury and exclusivity to the model.   The back see's some of that front design transpired in the back with similar lines worked into the solid LED bar light on the back. The roof line extends out into a spoiler over the rear window and tailgate. It's an ultra modern design that had quite a few heads turning, even mine every time I parked the car and walked off.

PERFORMANCE

The Carnival comes powered with a 2.2L 16V CRDI motor that produces 148kW and 440Nm of torque, weighing in at just over 2 tonnes without passengers, the motor does pretty well to propel the large chassis around more than comfortably. The day I received the car, I had planned a trip to the midlands with some visitors from Mauritius, it was the ideal type of car to go on a road trip with. Enough space for everyone to sit in comfort but more importantly, that diesel engine really shows its class on long journeys with me averaging around 9L per 100km and the range giving me almost 900km to the tank, this average didn't really change much even during my time doing urban drives with the car, the 8-speed automatic gearbox has much to do with this achievements by going through the gears optimally and not holding high revs on any particular gearbox when not needed. The Carnival also has paddle shifts on the steering wheel which I never used at all as I didn't have a need for as the gearbox was always perfectly fine. While the fuel tank is large at 72L, it's not as big as some of the other competitors which are closer to the 80L mark but giving the same sort of economy figures.

COMFORT

Where do I even begin with the level of comfort in this car? I compared the Grand Sedona to the likes of a private plane, this is one notch higher with it having all the modern tech. To start off with the, the gear selector is a round dial which you turn to select what gear you'd like to be in and push button to park. This is finished in crystal like Perspex with chrome accents, it really looks fantastic. The dash is finished off in a mixture of leather and high-gloss plastics, all which feel very good to the touch. The instrument cluster featuring dials and a 4.2" cluster screen displaying vehicle info and a massive 12.3" infotainment screen that has all sorts of features including climate control for the entire cabin, built-in phone apps and much more. The front passenger and driver get dual climate control with seat heating and cooling. The second row seating was two individual seat configuration with arm rests, they had their on climate control screen for the cabin temperature. The Carnival has dual sunroof for the front and back passengers. All windows are electric and the rear passengers of built in blinds for privacy or just to keep out the sun.  All the seats have USB ports for charging with the front getting three and one wireless charging pad. There is ample storage compartments and cup holders for all sorts of beverages. The luggage capacity even with all rows of seating up is massive, measuring in at 1139L and with the third and second row seats tucked away, it extends to 4110L!

VERDICT

Overall, I was blown away by the KIA Carnival, it really is a great luxury MPV offering from the brand, not only offering the same level of comfort as the Grand Sedona but exceeding it in many aspects. While big in size, driving the Carnival around didn't feel cumbersome and parking the car was fairly easy with all the driver aids present, like front and rear PDC's as well as all-round cameras.  The ride quality is smooth and something that you expect from luxury European cars, safety is up there with them as well. The design and layout of things in the cabin just makes sense and is very user friendly. It really is a great offering from the Korean brand, one that I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with and from what I've seen on social media, many of my motoring colleagues are sharing the same sentiments.
