Bucket Tech: HUAWEI Product Launch Dubai

Huawei unveiled its latest tablets, laptops, and earbuds at the Huawei Innovative Product Launch event themed "Creation of Beauty" in Dubai today. Among the new devices launched at the event were the HUAWEI FreeClip — a pair of fashionable earbuds with an open ear design, the HUAWEI MatePad Pro 13.2" — Huawei's largest tablet to date, a refreshed line up of the MateBook D 16 laptops, and the PaperMatte Edition of the popular MatePad Air. This latest product launch follows in the footsteps of the "Fashion Forward" event in October, which saw the unveiling of a new line up of wearable products.

"Technology can be a canvas for creativity. With the HUAWEI FreeClip, we are bringing style to wearable audio tech, turning them into a fashion statement. It is the result of Huawei's continuous research and investment in creating groundbreaking innovations. We are also introducing the new HUAWEI MatePad Pro 13.2", a tablet that will help people unleash their creativity," said Pablo Ning, President of Huawei Consumer Cloud Service Global Ecosystem Development & Sales Department.

HUAWEI FreeClip

The FreeClip are Huawei's first open-ear earbuds, combining wireless audio and a chic design in a versatile device, that could easily be mistaken for jewellery. Now users can enjoy the comfort of open-ear listening and express their personal style at the same time. Thanks to the innovative C-bridge Design, they fit snugly along the curvature of the ear. The C-bridge Design is the centrepiece of the FreeClip and acts as the earbuds’ clip and the connector between the acoustic and battery units. The FreeClip’s design is based on data from research done on the ears of over 10,000 people resulting in a refined micron-level ergonomic design that has undergone over 25,000 reliability tests. The result is that the earbuds stay in place even during the most intense physical activities.

The FreeClip's open-ear listening technology delivers clear and immersive sound without blocking ambient noise. To minimise sound leakage and ensure privacy, the earbuds use a reverse sound wave system that intelligently adjusts the volume and cancels the sound waves that “leak” out of the earbuds.

The earbuds come in a shell-shaped charging case that has a pearlescent sheen and a smooth stone-like texture, offering a comfortable grip and a unique aesthetic that blends simplicity and elegance. With the charging case, the FreeClip boasts a total music playback time of 36 hours. If the battery runs low, users can quickly charge the earbuds for 10 minutes and enjoy three hours of listening.

HUAWEI MatePad Pro 13.2”

The MatePad Pro 13.2" brings groundbreaking innovations to Huawei's tablet line up. It features a flexible OLED screen and has an astonishing 94% screen-to-body ratio, making it the tablet with the highest screen-to-body ratio currently available. And the screen boasts an impressive refresh rate of up to 144Hz. With its incredibly lightweight and slim design, the tablet sets a new standard in terms of portability. Weighing only 580g and measuring just 5.5mm in thickness, it is one of the thinnest tablets available on the market.

The M-Pencil (3rd generation) that comes with the tablet uses the ground-breaking NearLink technology developed by Huawei. This technology helps make the M-Pencil (3rd generation) the first stylus in the industry with ultra-precise 10,000-level pressure sensitivity. The new tablet is also a great tool for productivity-focused users as it supports the revolutionary Smart Magnetic Keyboard which adapts to the user and can be switched between three modes: Laptop Form, Split Form, and Studio Form.

HUAWEI MateBook D 16

The new MateBook D 16 brings an immersive large-screen experience with its 16-inch Eye Comfort FullView Display. Thanks to thin bezels all the way around it, it offers an expansive view with a high screen-to-body ratio of up to 90%, giving creators a larger canvas to work with and multitasking office workers a larger workspace.

The MateBook D 16 delivers a breakthrough in performance with the 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i9 High Performance Processor. This gives users the ability to easily handle heavy multitasking asks such as programming, illustrating, and video editing. Designed for maximum comfort and an optimised experience, the MateBook D 16 has a sleek and elegant design in a futuristic Space Grey and Mystic Silver. It weighs just 1.68kg with a chassis as thin as 17mm. The laptop uses the HUAWEI Metaline Antenna, enabling ultra-long-distance connections of up to 270 metres.

HUAWEI MatePad Air PaperMatte Edition

The HUAWEI MatePad Air PaperMatte Edition tablet was also unveiled at the event, bringing the popular PaperMatte Display to the MatePad Air series for the first time. This comes hot on the heels of the previous Mate Xs model which we didn't get in the country. Strategic timing from HUAWEI after their competitors introduced their latest models just a week prior to the Xperience HUAWEI event. Also showcased by HUAWEI that night was their new range topping notebook, a host of wearables and other home devices which I'll go through later in this blog post.

Mate Xs 2

Lets talk about HUAWEI's first foldable smart phone to be introduced to the SA market, the Mate Xs 2. Firstly, the folding configuration needs to be talked about, its very different from the others on the market as the uni-screen folds around like a book cover rather than sitting on the inside. Now, I know what you're thinking, this makes the screen at a higher risk for getting damaged and scratched, but not to worry, HUAWEI's Mate Xs 2  is made form an innovative composite screen structure which absorbs and mitigates the force of impact making it super durable, having a drop resistance of 2.5x and impact resistance of 2.8x, not forgetting that all important crush resistance of 1.4x. This was demonstrated by Vice President, Akhram Mohammed on stage as he dropped his own Mate Xs 2 while giving us the demo. The Mate Xs 2 features and ultra flat screen when unfolded thanks to the double-rotating Falcon Wing Hinge which opens the massive, industry leading,  7.8-inch screen.

The True-Chroma Foldable Display features 424 ppi, along with a high resolution of 2480 x 2200 when unfolded. The screens anti-reflection Nano Optical Layer keeps the view clear, even in direct sunlight. Camera's on the Mate Xs 2 is nothing short of what we expecting from their high-calibre of capturing devices in the past. It features a triple-camera system that includes a 50MP True-Chroma Camera, 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera and a 8MP Telephoto Camera. This all sits on the outside bevel of the device which when unfolded gives you a handy notch to hold the device by. The device is super light weighing in at just 255g, this is made possible from using airy-light design and innovative materials including the 3D fiberglass weave which also looks quite stunning.

The Mate Xs 2 is available locally from September 1st and priced at R39,999

Bucket Tech: HONOR Magic V

Global technology brand HONOR debuted the much-awaited HONOR Magic V, its latest innovation and first 5G foldable flagship smartphone. As expected, HONOR is pushing boundaries and raising the standards with its new foldable that hosts a suite of incredibly powerful, outstanding features and cutting-edge technologies combined with an aesthetic symmetrical slim design that make HONOR Magic V stand out from the rest.

Ultimate design aesthetics and slim body for the best-in-class experience

Overall, HONOR has focused a lot on the way the foldable should look, HONOR Magic V body features orderly curves around the edges, creating a sense of fluidity which achieves a slimmer outlook as well as a smooth and rounded grip to guarantee easier and more comfort grasp. The HONOR Magic V foldable phone measures 14.3mm in thickness when folded and 6.7mm when unfolded, weighing just 288g making it the thinnest in fold smartphone compared to similar products available in the market.

When folded, there is zero gap between the left and right screens of the HONOR Magic V, creating a seamless look when closed. The seamless design not only provides a more comfortable and slimmer grip, but also minimizes scratches caused by dust accumulated on the internal screen.

Since the hinge is a critical feature for any foldable phone. The design and placement of the hinge can have a significant impact on the phone’s overall look and display design. HONOR developed the Floating Waterdrop Hinge technology, integrating a perfect hinge and foldable design to offer a symmetrical, thin, and seamless form factor, the hinge design allows the phone to be closed seamlessly.

A more interesting part of the design is the expansive display.  The HONOR Magic V features a 6.45-inch 44° curved OLED display when folded, achieving a wider 21.3:9 aspect ratio and this makes the device exceptionally user-friendly and functional, as the screen functions like a traditional smartphone, rather than appearing long and narrow. The HONOR Magic V unfolds to an extra-wide 7.9-inch creaseless display, delivering a more immersive tablet-like experience which is ideal for viewing content, multi-tasking and increasing productivity while working.

Another major step for this foldable is that HONOR Magic V body incorporates premium aerospace-grade materials to ensure greater precision, more strength and durability while also providing a lighter weight for the hinge mechanism, including zirconium-based liquid metal, which is three times tougher than stainless steel. The premium aerospace-grade materials help the device to be lighter and create more balance resulting in a phone with an excellent center of gravity.

The premium design of the camera hasn’t been forgotten; the HONOR Magic V features the same Tri-ring camera design that appears across its other premium smartphone lines. This premium design language evokes a sense of symmetry and harmony.

HONOR Magic V stunningly crafted and comes in a variety of astonishing tones include Space Silver, Bright Orange and Gloss Black for a bold look.

Bucket Tech: Samsung Galaxy Fold

In a low-key event held last week in Johannesburg, Samsung launched their much anticipated Galaxy Fold. The world's first fold-able smart phone. It creates a new mobile category for the market  and combines the smart phone with a tablet. Now while it may create a lot of hype, it begs the question of the practicality of such a device with tablets being used for specific purposes these days and while being portable you never see many out in public, while the versatility of the smart phone has grown ever popular with many but clearly there is a gap in the market for such a device like the Galaxy Fold, as it garnered lots of interest world over when it was first shown. Other manufacturers are also hot on the heels of Samsung to create foldable devices of their own, one of which has already got theirs on the market in the Asian countries.

South Africans have given the same amount of interest to the device as the first batch of Samsung Galaxy Fold have already sold-out with the pre-order sales. Samung South Africa is currently working on increasing stock levels to keep up with the demand. Even after a delayed-release, there is clearly an appetite for this pioneering device. The Galaxy Fold officially goes on Sale in South Africa on the 18th of October 2019.

Just a quick recap on what the Galaxy Fold features, the world's first 7.3 inch Infinity Flex Display which folds into a compact device with a cover display. Galaxy Fold offers a powerful new way to multitask, watch videos, play games and more - bringing to life new experiences and possibilities years in the making. "Samsung is proud to introduce a premium foldable device that goes beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone" said Cambridge Mokanyane, Chief Marketing Officer at Samsung South Africa. "The pre-order sales are indicative of the public's affinity for technology that transcends the norm".
