Bucket Seat: Audi e-tron 55 Sportback

It seems like a life time ago since I got to experience Audi's range of electric cars at their launch in Cape Town, even though it was March 2022. Just feels like so much has happened since then and truth be told, a lot has happened but rather late than never, Audi sent down a test unit for me to zoot across town with a for a week. It wasn't the Iron Man edition RS e-tron GT but rather the 55 Sportback which, coincidentally I didn't get to drive on that evening, so I wasn't too disappointed to see this quietly roll into my driveway. Audi is one of the only manufacturers who have committed to a date whereby they will be stopping production on all internal combustion engines from their line-up, some might so bold, some might say stupid but given the vast array of models showcased in their e-tron line-up, it might be very bold of them to do so. After experiencing what the RS GT could do, I was blown away, so spending a week with the e-tron 55 Sportback was looking rather exciting to me, especially seeing that this would be my fourth EV on test, and the first from Audi, so I could gauge how different their approach is to the competitions.

DESIGN

The one question I got when EV's were first introduced into the market was "why must they be so ugly", I get that manufacturers wanted them to stand out, but some designs were a bit out there. I admired the creativity from some brands which incorporated recycled materials and made their EV's in factories which were Green rating but to the normal consumer, these were not characteristics they were interested, they just wanted normal looking cars and to their credit, that is exactly what Audi have done. The e-tron 55 Sportback looks as normal as a car could be, Audi say it combines spaciousness of an SUV with the performance of a four-door coupe. The lines of the car are stunning and with the large 21-inch 5 V spoke diamond turned rims really make the car give off a commanding presence. The headlamps are identical to the Q3, the body is similar shape to the Q5 and the only major difference is the dynamic looking rear of the car with the solid rear light. Both front and back lights are Audi's famed Matrix LED's which provide you with a welcome sequence "dance" as they like to call it, which one never gets tired of. The colour of this particular model was something that got a lot of attention too, the one pager I got with the car said it was Beige but after looking at the Audi website, the closest colour to it from their pallet I could see was "Typhoon Grey Pearl", I'll go with Beige. I know I said the car looked normal but there are distinct design differences which does make the car stand out and be more bold than other SUV's in the Audi stable. While the large Audi grille is there, it's completely blanked off, as there isn't a radiator that needs cool air to come through the car. The SUV coupe body does make it look ever so elegant on the road as well, one of the other big talking points was the lack of side mirrors which were replaced with the optional extra virtual exterior mirrors which I will touch on further on in the blog. The interior design matched the current new design language from Audi, almost a replica of the Q8 SUV Coupe.

PERFORMANCE

From the previous reviews, we know that EV's are super quick, with no combustion engine and no gears, it just means all the power available at once! But these cars are heavy, thanks to the batteries and other electrical elements to make the car function, also there has to be a way of regulating the power delivery to the wheels otherwise the driver and its occupants would suffer from whiplash on every take off! The 55 Sportback comes power with two synchronous electric motor which derive a combined power output of  300kW and 664Nm of torque at full tilt, this can be adjusted by the various driving modes with Dynamic being the one that unleashes the most amount of power on demand and Eco being the one that limits the most power. The various modes would obviously determine the amount of power is consumed by the batteries, hence the range when fully charged can give you anything from 372km to 453km. An interesting thing happened to me while driving this car, I think given the fact that I have driven quite a few of the newer EV's, I found that my range anxiety was no where existent when driving the 55 Sportback. Not sure if it was due to the realisation that this was one of the bigger batteries being the 95kW giving that longer lasting usage or that I was just becoming accustomed to EV driving. For the 7 days I had it, I probably only needed to charge it once but due to the inner journalist in me, I had to go try out the various new charges that have been installed around town. Fast charging had me go from 10% to 99% in just 28 minutes, you can download the Audi app and keep connected to monitor your cars status while you go about your shopping and know exactly when its time to go. The Quattro four wheel drive gives the car more composure and helps balance out that high torque factor, the large tyres minimize the bumps on the road and gives you a softer ride. The e-tron 55 is the first EV I saw with charging ports on either side of the car and with automatic retractable and closing covers. The right side also had the DC fast charging while the other had the normal AC charging port only.

COMFORT

Being based of an SUV, even though the coupe spec, the 55 Sportback was extremely spacious. The brown leather seats really complemented the beige exterior and black finishes on the inside. The piano black elements gave the car the premium feeling it deserves. The e-tron like the Q8 comes with a triple screen display, with the virtual cockpit which can be changed per user preference to display anything form your normal speedometer, to a full size navigation map. The main infotainment screen with MMI touch response is easy to use with Audi's new tile interface and has wireless mobile app connectivity which is simple to setup. The bottom screen is mainly used for the climate control settings but also displays the keyboard for navigation and as a sketch surface to write commands into. The gear shift is a rather interesting design, which looks like a plane throttle lever, its wrapped in soft touch leather which makes its nice place to rest your hand while driving, not that I'd encourage it as both hands should be on the steering at all times! The drive quality on the e-tron is smooth as silk, the lack of noise coupled with how easy it is to maneuver this large chassis around really makes it a pleasure. Now many think due to the car being electric, most of the creature comforts of the normal cars are cut out due to their high power consumption, well you'd be wrong because the e-tron 55 Sportback also offers seat heating for the driver and front passenger. The rear occupants also get dual zone climate control, a full panoramic sunroof, mesmerizing ambient lighting fills the cabin at night and remember those virtual exterior mirrors? Well add another two more screens, one on each door panel. It was a bit to get your head around at first but one quickly adjusts to it. Coming in at R24,000, it may seem like a massive waste of money but to me, after using them and seeing how much more attention it gets you, if you spending this much on a car, whats that little bit more to make it stand out? The benefits of it really came through in night driving, where it would cancel out the harsh glares from cars behind and give you a better view of either side when driving. The car also came with Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D sound system which is standard by the way. The slanted boot has an automated tailgate with a large luggage space and a full size spare wheel. The charging cables can be found at the front of the car. The Matrix LED lighting works like a dream, knowing when to switch on the extended lights, beam lights onto road signed and bend around corners, seriously my favourite lighting from all manufacturers at the moment.

VERDICT

I say this with a big chest, as this is the first EV I've driven and felt it just as or even better than a normal car. The confidence you get from driving the e-tron really gives you faith in Audi's goal of cutting out the ICE engines from their line up by 2026. If the technology they've managed to create now can deliver so much in their products, I can't wait to see what the next range of e-trons have to offer. While I was snobbish at the launch, only opting to drive the GT's because I wanted to unleash my inner Tony Stark, these are the really money makers for the brand and where you see the true benefit of their EV journey. It's for everyday people, doing everyday things but without the hassle of needing to fill fuel. I think if driven properly and not like a maniac like me, one only has to charge these cars maybe once every 10 days if its basic running around town you're doing. The regenerating power from the average driving around is pretty good too, so you learn to adapt to get the maximum benefits from it. The price is a bit much and a big pill to swallow but its the price to pay to change the future which is inevitable. There is a massive drive to get more charging facilities in the country and Audi have partnered with Rubicon to install more chargers at their dealerships and malls around the country. This is another massive positive step to making South Africa more EV friendly. Notice I didn't bring up load shedding once in this article but I have to unfortunately, lucky for us, its the one thing that we get right all the time, they keep to the time tables so you should plan in advance if your car requires charging, don't get caught out then put the blame on Eskom if you aren't quick to act. Also not sure if I mentioned in any of my other posts on EV's, most public places have dedicated EV parking bays, like major shopping malls and the airport, which are usually right by the entrance and wheel-clamp zones for none EV's, so you score on that front by getting premium parking!

Bucket Seat: 2021 Audi A3 Sedan

Despite what going on in the word currently, things have slowed down dramatically in industries with most manufacturers and corporations announcing total shut downs due to the COVID19 pandemic. Despite this, it's good to see there isn't all doom and gloom with brands announcing some new models for 2021. Yesterday Audi revealed it's new 2021 A3 Sedan, which is based on the A3 hatch we saw last month. The sedan version of the much loved mid-size family hatch  has been a popular model amongst locals, especially the sporty S and RS derivatives. Some just prefer a boot, I am one of those people as I feel apart from more luggage space, it completes the car, adds extra weight for driving performance and gives it more stability but that's just me.

Looking at this new model, it is quite a looker, I'm already picturing how I would spec my one! In keeping with the new design language, the front and side profile of the car is identical to the hatch with the extension of the rear luggage compartment flowing well into the design and makes it s perfect fit. The design of the rear tail lights are similar to the old with the adaptation of the new design style with that gill like effect. The lines are clean, sharp and elegant. The car has a very mature look to it as well. Stepping in side, this mature aspect of the design is even more evident with the new cockpit. While certain elements are retained and refined from the older model, there is no doubt that this is a complete new package. The A3 Sedan offers all the cool tech that is available in most of their other models, some of which will be optional extras. While there is no word yet from Audi SA yet on engine variants coming to SA, I'm sure it wont be too different from what we see with the hatch.

Bucket Seat: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 3.0L Diesel VX.L

Toyota for long have been one of the go-to brands when it came to SUV's, they've dominated the market since the early days which the big hitters in the industry and proved to not only compete with them but also surpass them in sales with their products not only being cheaper but in some instances, better than that of the much pricier European counterparts. The legendary reliability of Toyota has also been a big part in the success, with consumers knowing that they're getting a good quality product and not something that will cost you an arm and a leg to maintain.  Of recent the market has shifting focus with many brands bringing out a wide variety of SUV's and SAV's, which has saw the trend shift to this segment of car as the preferred choice of many, while they may have their purpose, most aren't true off road going vehicles, with at most, some offering only four wheel drive. Toyota, with the Land Cruiser models have still been one of the best on the market, for a true all round offering, and I was fortunate enough to be get behind the wheel of their new Land Cruiser Prado VX.L for a week.

DESIGN

Being part of the Fourth Generation of Prado's the design over the last three models haven't been very different with the overall styling remaining the same and subtle changes to the lights and interior. This latest version of the Prado is very stylish though, with a nice big front grille in chrome finish, the elongated front head lamps with LED strip below adding shape to the very bulky and edgy design. It has some hints of Lexus DNA here and there which add to the appeal of the car. The normal ride height is quite high, but this is adjustable with the automatic air suspension, the Prado being a fully fledged 4x4 comes with large tyres with high profiles and 18" rims, so you know you can really go bundu bashing with it. Moving around to the back, the styling remains the same to the pre-facelift model with some white accents on the lights. Being the top of the range L model, Toyota have added extras to make you know this is the real McCoy with added chrome finishes adding to that luxury feel. On the inside, one really can't fault anything on the design front., I love the way everything is laid out on the centre console, with a dedicated section for off-roading.

PERFORMANCE

The car is powered by a 3.0 litre, inline 4 cylinder diesel motor, which produces 120kW and 400Nm of torque. Not the most exciting figures by far from such a big engine but this car is a brute and all it's power comes to fruit when taking the roads less traveled. On the dirt, coupled with the four wheel drive, the Prado makes mince meat of the terrain, move onto more rocky pastures, the torque comes into play with the engine hauling the massive frame over some of the more tricky routes. All while it barely sips the diesel in its massive 120 litre tank. On tarred surface, it does feel like a slouch especially with a full load, and the 5 speed auto gearbox does it no favours but once it gets going, it just shift nicely along. The thing that surprised me the most was the comfort, but that we'll chat about a little later. The dedicated off-road panel I was chatting about earlier in the center console has everything you need to set the car up to drive across almost any terrain, but the car does also automatically judge the response of the surface while driving and adjusts to suit.

COMFORT

The Prado is huge, you see it on the road but don't really take notice of really how big it is until you get into one, or for the smaller folk, try to get into one. That side step they have on there isn't just for fun as some of my passengers found out. The seats could be compared to sofa's as they're big and plush, the front passengers get the luxury of heated and cooled options for themselves while the rear three get to choose how much space they need as the rows can be moved forward and backwards if need be and there is good reason for that as neatly tucked away into the floor of the trunk are two additional seats which when raised makes the Prado a full 7 seater, which can seat 7 adults, yes, 7 adults comfortably. I put this to the test as we made a days trip exploring the KZN midlands with some friends on the last day I had it. This of course minimizes the space in the trunk but you still can squeeze in a bag and a half. Another neat feature in the Prado is the refrigerated center compartment which sits under the arm rest of the two front passengers. It's quite deep and can fit four 500ml bottles easily, and with most cooled compartments in cars whereby they just let the aircon blow in the cool air, this one is an actual fridge! Within 30 minutes of have warm beverages put inside, it was ice cold and ready to drink. Coming back to the ride quality, while the air-suspension might not be as fancy as some of the others, it does its job, no matter what surface we were travelling on, the ride remained the same and had no one spilling their cool beverage along the way.

TECHNOLOGY

The Prado comes packed with all the tech you expect in a modern day 4x4, keyless entry with push start, a large multi- infotainment screen for all you media purposes, unlike the Hilux, the Prado has dials for volume and tuning control which I prefer. It has bluetooth and media streaming. It comes standard with a 14 speaker sound system which includes a subwoofer in the boot. The multi function steering wheel is powered by a hydraulic/ variable flow control, making it easier to steer in difficult terrain, the car has 4 cameras, one at the front, one in the rear and two on the side, giving the driver the option to switch between them, to navigate in tight spots, or can opt to see a birds eye view of the car. The rear seats are electronically controlled by switches in the boot which fold up or out in a matter of seconds.  There are three power sockets in the car, a 12V in the front and rear and a 220V in the boot. The Prado has LED high be headlights which have adaptive technology which auto adjusts when it senses oncoming cars.

VERDICT

While the Prado might not be the best Toyota offers in its Land Cruiser stable, it certainly is one of the favourable models from them. The price tag is more than justified when compared to what else is on the market. Its packed with technology, great finishes and looks fantastic. It's more than capable of going off-road, and will eat up almost any surface with ease. With the amount of equipment you getting in this car as standard, all for under a million, is almost a steal. Toyota really have kept the Prado legacy high on this one and certainly remains one of my favourite SUVs on the market today.

World Day of Remembrance

Every year 100's if not 1000's of lives are lost on South Africa's roads and many are left with life long injuries caused by accidents. Despite many campaigns and initiatives by government, the numbers accidents on our roads keep increasing by the year. Where in some cases the accidents are unavoidable, many could have been prevented as the most common causes are drivers who were speeding or driving under the influence of alcohol. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that either of the two are dangerous, we have laws in place to prevent them! So what gives you or anyone the right to ignore them, especially when you are going to endanger the lives of other innocent motorists. The change has to come from the individual and that's the only way we can solve this problem.

18th November 2012 has been dubbed "World Day of Remembrance", it is a day that will be recognized internationally as a day we remember loved ones,  friends, family  and all whom were affected by a road traffic accident. Besides remembering the deceased, we will also help create awareness to the problem at hand, especially drinking and driving.

If you live in Durban, the guys at one of the cities most popular restaurants, Spiga D'oro along with Anna Savage who is one of the creators of the iHeart Market will be hosting an event on the 18th of November, the venue still remains a secret buto the promises to be a great one with plenty of good food, art, music and craft. Prior to the day, they will be hosting other events to generate a hype for the event, first of which being next Tuesday, the 23rd of October 2012 where a tweetup will be held at the Upstairs Bar above Spiga. Here you can meet and spend the evening with the people you mainly communicate with via your phone or a computer, at the same time you can tweet about the event using the hashtag #rememberme. You can also join the facebook fan page, this event is not limited to people on social media so spread the word to family and friends and lets make this a great day to remember those we have lost.

Those details again:

Date: 23rd October 2012
Time: 18h30
Dress: Casual
Food: Snacks will be supplied by Spiga
Bring: your phone
Hashtag: #rememberme

...btw, if you're drinking that night, don't forget to call a cab for your journey home ;)
