Bucket Seat: New VW Golf now in SA

Following its premiere in February 2025 at the Volkswagen Indaba in Kariega, the new Volkswagen Golf is now available for sale.

The Volkswagen Golf has a rich history in South Africa, dating back to its 1978 launch with the Mk1 (first generation), which quickly gained acclaim for reliability and performance. Locally assembled at the Volkswagen production plant in Kariega, it became affordable and popular with the South African customers. Its success continued with the launch of the second generation model in 1984, praised for improved quality followed by the third generation in 1993 and fourth generation in 1999, with the latter becoming a top seller in the local market.

The fifth and sixth generation models were introduced with class leading technology and safety, while the seventh generation, launched in 2013, brought further refinement. The Golf’s enduring appeal lies in its blend of quality, performance and design style.

The eight generation model continues this legacy, cementing the Golf as a key model for Volkswagen in South Africa. When the new Golf was launched in South Africa in 2021, it was not offered with the venerable and efficient 1.4 TSI engine variant. However with the introduction of the updated model, the 1.4 TSI engine, producing 110kW has made a return to the lineup to mark the return of the icon.

The new Golf impresses with a next-generation infotainment system, a more intuitive operating concept, a sharper front and rear end design as well as efficient drive systems.

Revamped front and rear and new light design. The new Golf can be recognised by its new front end. Bucket Seat: Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio has come a long way in its journey in the South African market. While overlooked in its early years, it soon began to take traction as newer models made their way to the country. With word of mouth about its reliability, build quality and capabilities sales took off in a positive note. You won't find many in and around the city but when you move into the farm lands, that is when you will start to spot them. With its latest version sporting the new Mahindra logo, the Scorpio N is a significant upgrade from its predecessors, positioning itself as a robust yet budget-friendly SUV option. I got to spend a few days with this latest version of the Scorpio N and here are my thoughts on this SUV offering from the Indian motor giant.

DESIGN

I tend to call a spade a spade and the previous generations Scorpio's did nothing for me in terms of design, in fact they were pretty awful with curves in all the wrong places, weird shaped lights, bulges in places that didn't need bulges, overall and eyesore to put it mildly but of recent, the designs coming out of India have a more European style to them and they look great!  Its design, both exterior and interior, has been modernized significantly. The Scorpio N sports a more defined and muscular look compared to the older models, with smoother lines and a stylish appearance that doesn’t compromise on its rugged essence. The dark green colour that my test unit came in, made it look sophisticated and classy. As mentioned, the design has a European style to it but still has maintains that Indian Identity, kinda like Katrina Kaif wearing a wearing a Lengha top with Sissy Boy Jeans. Didn't expect a Bollywood fashion reference in this review, didn't you? Even the interior has undergone a vast improvement, with a more classic modern layout that is form and functional.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood, the Scorpio N features a 2.2-liter mHawk four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that delivers 128 kW of power and 400 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive system that includes a low-range transfer case and a rear mechanical locking differential, making it highly capable off-road  The SUV offers drive modes like Normal, Snow, Mud & Ruts, and Sand under Mahindra's ‘4XPLOR’ terrain system, enhancing its versatility on different terrains. In terms of driving experience, the Scorpio N handles well both on and off the road. It provides a comfortable ride, absorbing bumps efficiently thanks to its double wishbone front suspension and Watt’s link rear suspension setup. The powertrain is smooth and adequate for typical driving conditions, although it might not excel in high-speed scenarios. Fuel efficiency is reasonable, with real-world consumption likely to be around 8 liters per 100 kilometers. I did take the Scoprio N with me on my annual trek to Sun City and it made easy work of traveling the dreaded R556 at night. Dodging potholes and conquering those uneven speed bumps with ease, almost as if to say "please man, I'm made for Indian roads, this is a piece of cake". So, off-road we went with it, to see how it handles the harsh African terrain and again, with the easy to use driving modes selected by the jog shuttle selector, it was simple to change the cars terrain response settings and switching from 2 wheel to 4 wheel driving.

COMFORT

The interior of the Scorpio N is a marked improvement over previous models, like I said earlier, I love the new layout design, its very functional and it features better quality materials than previous generations which look great and are robust. It even features a modern infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with wireless connectivity, there are USB ports for charging devices and loads of storage compartments. Higher trims, like the one I was in come with additional luxuries like a Sony sound system and wireless charging. That Sony sound system surprised me, at first I wasn't sold but after tinkering with the sound settings, you could tell an Indian had a hand in this sound system because the bass, is definitely in your face. There's a lot of positives to the new designed interior however, some users might find the indicator sound particularly annoying, and the stop-start system could use a software update to function more effectively as it does feel rather abrupt and I found myself switching if off every time I got in. The second row seating is very comfortable and spacious while the third row is pretty much expected of a third row seating in an 7-seater SUV. The luggage space is decent, we logged 2 golf bags and two big suit cases which required us to drop 40% of the second row seating. The tailgate makes it easier with the swing door and not the traditional hatch style tilt up opening. It has two cameras, one in the front and one at the back, but with different angle options which gives the driver a better perspective.

VERDICT

Overall, the Mahindra Scorpio N stands out as a well-rounded SUV that combines rugged capability with modern amenities at a competitive price, making it a strong contender in its segment. One of the key selling points of the Scorpio N is its pricing, which offers a compelling alternative to more expensive ladder-frame SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner, while still providing seven-seat capacity and substantial off-road capabilities. Speaking of the Fortuner, a lot of people have asked me whether it is better than the Japanese firm favourite and whether it would give it some competition in the market. I honestly still feel the Fortuner nudges ahead of the Mahindra on quite a few fronts, doesn't justify the steep pricing but in terms of the Scorpio N being a direct competitor, I'm not entirely sold on that one yet. You're still going to get great reliability from Mahindra, these cars are solid and hardly break, even in the toughest conditions so on that front I think there isn't a need to worry and with them having an assembly plant here in Durban, parts shouldn't be that difficult to source as well. It certainly a massive improvement from the brand and it's good to see this company heading in the right direction.

Bucket Seat: GLC 300d Coupe

Since the increased interest in the SUV segment over the years, the SUV Coupe or SAV, how some brands are terming them has also garnered more prospective buyers. At first, I was not a fan of these so called coupe sport utility vehicles but as time went by and we've seen designers broaden their visions of these cars, I've begun to take a liking to them myself. At the beginning of the year I was invited by Mercedes-Benz South Africa to drive their second generator of the GLC Coupe at its local launch in Cape Town. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looked in the metal, as sometimes pictures may be deceiving, the focal point of these Coupe SUV's is the profile and the rear, as many of the first gens to hit the market seemed clumsy, the GLC Coupe however had its proportions spot on and that rear exuded sexiness and sophistication from any angle. I spent a few days with the GLC300d Coupe and having already driven the normal SUV version of the very same engine, I knew exactly what I was in store for in terms of the power delivery but with this Coupe design, I wasn't merely driving a soccer moms car, I was driving a sexy SUV Coupe, here's my thoughts on the second gen GLC Coupe.

DESIGN

It's all about the rear for me, back in 2015 Jennifer Lopez caused a stir when she reportedly insured her butt for $30 million, firstly I didn't know you could insure body parts but granted she has a good looking rear end so one can understand why she would have done that. In retrospect, the GLC Coupe's rear is that good looking that on top of my car insurance I would also just insure the rear end of this car because I think it is worthy of that much! I did cause some controversy on my Twitter/ X channel when I had the car on test by saying this is the best looking rear end in its segment. Many agreed but there were also a few who didn't but then again they didn't understand what I meant by "in it's segment" but the English language isn't for everyone and be that as it is, I still when lined up to the likes of the X4, Q5 Sportback or even for interest sake, the Haval H6 GT, the Merc still wins that sexy booty competition for me. There is the rest of the car to talk about too, the sloping roofline angular lines, give the car a sporty and dynamic appearance. From the front, you're greeted to the prominent front grille and LED headlights which we find on the new C-Class, this adds to the sporty and aggressive look to the GLC Coupe. There are great design details like the chrome-tipped exhaust pipes and the aluminum side step. All of this adds to the sleek and stylish nature of the GLC Coupe which combines the ruggedness of an off-road vehicle with the elegance of a coupe. The interior is a mimic of the standard GLC but with great textures and trims to choose from, this one having the pin-stripe dash which some dubbed "mafia suit spec" but gives the cabin some added details. The AMG kit added to the aggression with the large 20-inch AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels. Overall, a very impressive looking package from the Germans, but how does this engine differ to the normal GLC?

PERFORMANCE

The GLC300d Coupe is considered a formidable executive SUV due to its potent performance, the 300d model is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel hybrid engine that produces 215 kW and 550 Nm of torque. It has a 9-speed automatic transmission and can go from 0-100 kph in 6.12 seconds. The fuel consumption is also relatively low, with a claimed 5.5 L/100 km, but with my heavy foot and the multi-lane highways of Durban, I battled to achieve that figure. While it remains and SUV, there was a sporty feel about the ride set up. The bulky rear felt more grounded that the normal GLC SUV, and as a result allowed me to be more aggressive with it on the roads. The 500Nm of torque were always ready on demand, be it at a standing start or when overtaking on the roads, the car delivered power on demand and thanks to that smart hybrid system which adds an additional 17kW on top of the 198kW which the engine produces, there was no lag what-so-ever. What works really well for me is the 9-speed automatic gearbox, it's so on the ball with gear changing, even when braking, the down changes are cool and calculated which aids in the fuel economy. Top speed of the GLC300d is limited to 249km/h, but achieving that speed would be a stretch given its design and nature being an SUV, that being said it reaches 0-100km/h time of 6.12 seconds. The GLC Coupe is by no means nimble in nature, but at the same time it didn't feel bulky either, maneuvering GLC Coupe was pretty easy, the steering feels light, and with the big tyres and turning tight turning circle it works well in both high speeds and low speeds.

COMFORT

The focal point of the interior is the 10.25-inch infotainment screen, it's really difficult not to notice it when seated in any part of the cabin. The high-definition display which projects mobile apps wirelessly is part of the new interior design language from the brand and will see it expanded into other models as well. The cabin is neatly laid out, with the increase in ride height, the cabin height is increased too, that means getting in and out of the car is quite comfortable for anyone. If you are vertically challenged, that is where the aluminium side step comes in handy. There are loads of storage compartments in the GLC coupe, the center storage is deep enough to store bottle of white and it has two USB C ports for charging devices and a wireless charging tray. The cup holders have a neat cover which closes to give off a nice finish to the center. The car is tech-savvy with the latest MBUX infotainment system that is highly intuitive and user-friendly. The Mercedes-Benz AI voice assistant is ever ready to help with any command, or if you just feel like asking it random questions, you can do that too. The cabin has dual-zone climate control with twin vents in the rear for the second row passengers, was disappointed to note there was no USB ports for them to charge their devices. The sloping roof line doesn't impact the headroom at the back though, so one doesn't have to duck when getting in. Having the AMG kit, the car came with the twin-spoke multi-function steering wheel with haptic controls. It's the 3rd time having it in a test car and I'm still very confused as to how to use it properly. It just feels a bit much to me and hopefully in the future they can dumb it down. The panoramic sunroof is a welcomed addition to a car like this, I love the look it gives from the outside and with all that natural light coming into the cabin, it makes it quite an enjoyable space to be in. The sound system didn't wow me, I heard better sound from their counterparts from their entry level speakers.

VERDICT

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe boasts cutting-edge technology, including a user-friendly infotainment system, mild-hybrid powertrains, and advanced driver assistance systems. The optional Tech Package offers additional features like air suspension and active rear-axle steering. With its sleek design and luxurious interior, the GLC Coupe is a compelling choice for those seeking a technologically advanced and stylish SUV. The interior is also more luxurious and tech-savvy, spacious and luxurious with premium materials, advanced technology, and comfortable for seating for five passengers. The drive is fun and what you would expect from the brand, the 300d engine is the one for me, and that hybrid tech with the diesel motor is a synergy made for the open road. I would buy this car based on the looks lone, especially that rear end but thankfully there are more reasons to make you want to purchase this car too.

Bucket Seat: BMW M340i LCI

You know that slogan from that chip company who make potato chips that come in a can? "Once you pop, you can't stop?" Yeah, well that's the only thing than I can describe the feeling of driving the new BMW M340i LCI, because it has its on pops coming from the large dual tail pipes and the power drive is so addictive, ever since I got behind the wheel of it in March for the local launch, I was waiting like a little kid on Christmas to drive it again! So when BMW dropped it off over the Easter weekend for me to play with, I wasn't bothered about Easter eggs and hot cross buns, I was more interested in putting pedal to the metal in this bad boy! Many call it a mini "M3" and while it does don the "M" badge and is considered to be part of the M Performance stable, it still has its limitations or should I rather say, it's restrictions to not make it too much of a competitor to the pure M3 model but it still delivers tonnes of fun and performance to put a smile on any motoring enthusiast, read more on my time with BMW M340i LCI as I discover what exactly has changed since its pre-facelift model.

DESIGN

Big talk comes in when it comes to face-lifts and how brands make the cosmetic changes to persuade owners of the first generation models to want to trade-in their older models for this one and to their credit, BMW have always hit the nail on the head with their Life Cycle Impulse models as they like to call. Unlike previous 3 Series, the LCI only comes in two packages, namely Sport and M Sport, with the M340i only available in the M Sport guise. Subtle but big differences come in to the design of the BMW 3 Series LCI, with the trademark kidney grille becoming narrower and wider, as with most new models, this is an active grille which opens and closes when required, this also comes with a silver horizontal style hatch to emphasize the sporty nature of the car. The new front headlamps are also more sleeker with an upside down L directional style LED daytime running lights. The bottom bumper/ diffuser also gets a sporty look with a more larger air in-take for the radiator and more angular shape side intakes which follow the profile of the car to give it a more dramatic look. The side profile of the car remains largely the same with new rim options available to choose from, this model featuring the 19-inch double spoke bicolour jet black rim. Moving to the rear end, the tail lights get the top part of it smoked now with the major difference to the bottom bumper that has a large black style difusser with more angles and lines to make the car look mighty aggressive from the back. Being the range topping M340i, the car has larger dual trapezoidal type exhaust over the conventional round tailpipes found on the rest of the 3 Series LCI range. The interior remains mostly the same as the older model with two very distinct differences, that being the new large curved display which integrates the instrument cluster with the infotainment screen and the new gear selector, which I will touch on later on in the blog.

PERFORMANCE

Powered by the famed B58 motor which is a 3.0-litre, 6 cylinder TwinPower Turbo that produces 285kW and 500Nm of torque, the car certainly doesn't lack power and when Sport + mode is engaged, it really brings out the true beast of this car. The growls from the motor is invigorating to say the least, couple that with the smooth driving  feel with extra grip from the xDrive, BMW really have something special here. I think this motor, while being used on a number of models in the range is best suited to this chassis, almost feels purpose built for it as with the weight and size makes it feel balanced. While it does weight a bit more than the M240i and the Z4 M30i, the M340i still produces a respectable 0-100km/h time of just 4.3 seconds. the Sport Automatic transmission works like a dream in this car, with the flappy paddles behind the steering working well when called into duty. Depending on your driving style, it can get very thirsty while on the road, with Eco Pro mode keeping things tidy in terms of fuel efficiency but with me only have 7 days with the car, I don't think I took it off Sport + mode hence giving me an average fuel consumption of about 15.2L per 100km, although the brochure says it does average 8L per 100km, we will have to just take their word for it. Big brakes in the front and back help with the stopping power of this car, it has collision detection which warns you first before engaging the auto brake should you not head its request.

COMFORT

Stepping inside the new 3 Series LCI makes you feel like you're inside a fancy command center with BMWs new curved screen display. It's part of their new design language which see's all models adapt this feature. While it being one solid component there is a break between the infotainment screen and the driver instrument cluster. This is around where the steering wheel is so it makes sense to not have something blocked out by the wheel. The infotainment screen is touch screen but can also be navigated from the iDrive jog shuttle drive. The new BMW OS is pretty easy to use, via both the jog shuttle and touch screen. It features wireless mobile app connectivity which displays it nice and big on the screen. The vehicle info and other features are pretty easy to find and while BMW have done away with conventional climate control knobs and buttons, and have them integrated into the screen, it isn't as annoying as some other brands who have done the same and it works very well. The car has a 3-zone system for the driver, front passenger and rear occupants having their own controls. The car has electric adjustable seats for the driver and front passenger with the now, much controversial decision of having seat heating as a payable subscription. The car came loaded with a host of optional extras, most of which I am favoured to, I've spoke endless about the adaptive LED lights before and BMW have made them better in this model, what makes you tell them apart from the regular LED is the blue light it has at the bottom. Harman Kardon sound system always impresses me, would have liked to see a B&O option for this model seeing it is a range topping model but the H/K works. The rear occupants have enough space and comfortable leather seats. The luggage capacity is pretty generous as well with me fitting two golf bags comfortably without having to drop the seats. Ride quality is pretty decent as well, considering its sitting on 19-inch rims with low profile tyres and M tech suspension.

VERDICT

Overall, the M340i to me is the perfect package, a family size sedan that offers a spacious and comfortable interior with plentiful luggage space with an engine that delivers optimal performance for those who like to live life in the fast lane. While some might say the power is an overkill but I disagree wholeheartedly, people who drive BMW's love performance and that is the reason they are drawn to the brand. Giving someone the option to have a 3 Series with the performance that could rival some of the other brands performance models on the market is a genius trick and this one being almost R700,000 cheaper than its bigger brother makes it a no brainer for some. It's a great looking car, with loads of new tech loaded as standard from BMW, a host of safety features for the driver and its occupants and it's just such a great car to drive, be it short stints or long distances, the nice thing is that every now and then when you want to go full send with it, it has the option for you to do so. With the cars computer based traction control and stability control, along with the xDrive system you always have peace of mind when doing so. Apart from the 320d as based purely on a financial basis being my favourite 3 Series, if money was not an option, my pick would definitely be this, the M340i.

Bucket Seat: Hyundai Kona N Line

The Hyundai Kona was always a car that left a question mark hovering over my head, from its inception in the market I could never figure out where it fits in. While it was an attractive looking car, boasts a great deal of options that you'd expect from a car in this price bracket I could never put my finger on it and say, that's a great hatchback or great crossover. So one would think after spending some time with the face-lift model in the N Line guise, I would have a better understanding of this car and could nail down where it sits in terms of segments in the motoring world. The answer is no, but in saying that, as you read through my review, you would find that it does have a purpose in the market and will have appeal to certain buyers.

DESIGN

The styling on the Kona is quite different in the sense that it comes across more like a hatchback than SUV, which is where my confusion starts. It has a low stance with quite a bit of bulk which comes from bold wheel arches and a slightly raised ride height. This one being the N Line version has the full on sports treatment with lowered front splitters, a more aggressive grill and rear difusser as well as large multi-spoke rims. There are extra fins and details to add to the N appeal making this look like a proper racer, dare I say it, even a hot hatch.  The styling makes it evident that this model is more aligned to the SUV range of the Hyundai stable with the signature split head lamps featuring the LED daytime running lights on the top with the main headlamps below, this is also mirrored at the back with the tail lights being split. Its a refreshing look to what we're normally used to and adds character as such to the car.

PERFORMANCE

The N Line model has the 1.6T motor, which produces 146kW with 265Nm of torque. That power output is startling to say the least with it being 40kW more than the NA 2.0 engine that is also offered in the Kona range but not with the N Line. The engine was very responsive and coupled with the 7-speed DCT gearbox proved to be a lot of fun to drive. I did find the gearbox to be twitchy on the lower gears, especially changing from first to second at low speeds, it gave the feel of it slipping and made the car jerk which wasn't very pleasant to say the least. This could have been an issue with this particular unit and not a common problem faced by the car, so will report in on that when I have further info on it. Other than that, it was a brilliant driving experience given from the car .The ride quality was quite superb and with the gusty engine just made you feel like you were behind the wheel of a sporty hatch rather than a crossover SUV., I would have liked paddle shifters on the steering to echo that feel and also could have minimized that issue I had with gear changes.

COMFORT

Taking a look at the interior of the Kona N, it would give some of the Europeans some stiff competition not only form the styling but also levels of comfort and choice of materials used in the cabin. It was obviously sporty being kitting out with the N Line package, that including sports seats, red stitching , sports style steering with the N badge prominent on the wheel and gear selector. What intrigued me a lot was the tech loaded in this car, from a full digital dash which had quite amazing graphics and animations when toggled through the driving modes, even the infotainment screen was very intuitive and easy to use. This came preloaded with mobile apps for use of use when driving. The front passenger and driver enjoyed climate control,  the car had two power outlets as well as USB connection for driver and front passenger. The Kona also had hill descent control should you find your self in tricky situations with it. Other note worthy features on the Kona were lane keep assist, active cruise control with collision warning and electric seats for the driver.

VERDICT

While Hyundai maintain this car is a crossover/ SUV I don't blame people for thinking its more of a hatch more so with the N Line kit on it. It even feels like a hatch when driving but with the added extras that you would find on a crossover, that would be a bonus to anyone. I can probably sit here and nit pick minor details about this car but truth be told the week spent with it was very enjoyable, while there isn't any direct competition for it in the market, well none that I can think of anyway, I feel there is a need for this type of vehicle as you will get those buyers whom aren't really sure if they want to make that transition into the SUV lifestyle but want something thats practical and small. This would be the ideal car for those and like I said, while it might have the off-road capabilities, it doesn't give off that big bulky vibe you'd usually expect from an SUV/ Crossover, so now you understand why I am still confused about its segment rating.
