Bucket Seat: New BMW X1

In its third generation, the new BMW X1 touched down on our shores late last year, with new bold looks, advanced tech which see's it usher in the latest that BMW has to offer and overall a more mature model than its predecessors. Last week I had the opportunity to sample the two engine variants currently available in the country, namely the 18i and the 18d models during the launch in Gauteng. The X1 model has always been a favourite of mine, from all the compact SUV's in the market, this one gave the consumer a more premium product compared to its rivals. Whilst the others cut costs in use cheaper materials in the cabin and cutting out on tech available, BMW didn't opt for this and gave the buyer to option to load their X1 with the same nifty gadgets that they offer on the larger models. It's nice to see that not much has changed with this newer model and with it coming with the latest BMW design language, it gives a taste of what is to come from the brand.

The bold new design is great to look at in the metal, some even say its a baby version of the XM, while I feel that might be a bit far stretched there is obvious design elements that liken it to the most powerful BMW model ever produced. The new grille isn't one to cause any controversy like some other models but it is very pronounced and has vertical slats to accentuate the design. The bold lines and the squared off wheel arches give the X1 a more aggressive look. BMW as always make good use of the silvers, chromes and brush aluminum detailing that gives the X1 a premium look even though its just the entry model in the X family.

The interior has had a massive overhaul as well with it receiving the latest design with the massive curved screen that is split into the drivers instrument cluster and the infotainment screen, which measures 10.25-inch for the driver cluster and 10.7-inch for the info side, it comes loaded with BMW OS8. The new X1 also does away with the BMW iDrive system which BMW say due to the compact nature of the car and the relatively large touch screen display negates the use of it. The X1 also gains the new gear selector which is small and gives the cabin a much roomier feel, there is also the floating hand rest which has a storage bin under the cushioned leather arm rest.

As mentioned the car is loaded with new tech and has a select few options to choose from, the cars came with camera package, augmented GPS which displayed on the screen when to take turns via animated arrows, heads up display, wireless mobile phone connectivity with mobile apps built in, there is a choice of speaker systems available with the optional Harman Kardon sound, surround view camera package, park assist and reverse assist which includes PDC and exit warning function.

Driving both the petrol and diesel engines provided a great driving experience with each engine offering something different in terms of performance. The petrol engine which is powered by a 1.5L Twin Power Turbo engine that produces 115kW seemed more composed on the road with shorter gear shifts, with great fuel consumption. The diesel on the other hand provided that lovely torque experience that you'd normally get with a diesel car, its the first time I drove an 18d motor and it wasn't that bad generating 110kW. It also came with that 7-speed auto gearbox and had the Boost option which is activated by holding down the left paddle that generates more power in a 1 second burst, allowing for fast acceleration when overtaking. I got to test that feature out a few times on the launch and was very impressed by it.

Overall, the new X1 is a small SUV, for me it has the edge over is rivals purely from the tech that comes with the car. It's still a practical vehicle for small families, capable for short school runs or a weekend away. The drive is smooth and comfortable, while small you would find the cabin and luggage hold good enough for your everyday needs. While the engine sizes may not entice most, be sure that they more than capable of powering the X1 and being fuel efficient. What also excites me is the introduction of an all electrical iX1 which is due in the country later this year.
