Audi South Africa has introduced the all-new Audi RS 5, marking an important milestone for the brand as its first high-performance plug-in hybrid RS model. Available in both Sedan and Avant body styles, the new RS 5 combines Audi's familiar performance DNA with electrification, pairing a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor to deliver an impressive 470 kW and 825 Nm of torque. The result is a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 3.6 seconds, while the 22 kWh battery provides an all-electric driving range of between 78 and 84 kilometres. Power is delivered through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, with a boost function providing maximum performance for up to ten seconds when required.
Perhaps one of the most interesting developments is the introduction of a new quattro drivetrain featuring Dynamic Torque Control, incorporating the world's first electromechanical torque vectoring system on the rear axle of a production vehicle. This allows torque to be distributed between the rear wheels with greater precision, improving cornering ability, traction and overall driving dynamics. The RS-specific suspension with twin-valve shock absorbers further enhances the car's ability to balance everyday comfort with the sort of performance expected from an RS model. Drivers also have access to various Audi drive select modes, including RS-specific settings.
Visually, the new RS 5 makes a bold statement with wider bodywork, muscular proportions and distinctive RS styling. Compared to the standard A5, the body has been widened by four centimetres on each side, while the aggressive Singleframe grille, large air intakes, centrally positioned oval exhaust outlets and RS-specific lighting signatures give it a more purposeful appearance. The Sedan offers a sleeker, sportier silhouette, while the Avant brings additional practicality without compromising its performance credentials. Inside, Audi has combined sporting character with premium finishes, including RS sport seats, honeycomb detailing, Nappa leather, brushed aluminium accents and a flattened RS steering wheel. The digital cockpit and MMI infotainment system are complemented by performance monitoring features, a head-up display and a standard Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system.
Technology also plays a significant role, with the RS 5 offering extensive performance data, including lap times, G-forces, tyre temperatures and detailed drivetrain information. Drivers can even record and analyse their performance on racetracks, adding another layer to the driving experience. A comprehensive selection of driver assistance features, surround-view cameras, park assist and smartphone connectivity ensure that the RS 5 remains practical for everyday use. With its combination of electrified performance, advanced drivetrain technology and distinctive RS styling, the new RS 5 represents an exciting new chapter for Audi Sport, showing that electrification doesn't necessarily mean compromising on performance or driving excitement
