Bucket Seat: Leapmotor C10 REEV


I'll be honest, I cannot keep up with the various Chinese brands that are entering our market and I'm in the motoring space, so I can only imagine how the general consumer feels. It's like over the last year, there's just been a sudden influx of brands that we have never heard of popping up. Some are affiliated or are sub-brands of well known Chinese manufacturers that have a really good footprint and some are just totally new. For my first test car of 2026, I had one of the latest brands give me a car to spend some time with, and it was from "Leapmotor". Founded in 2015 in Hangzhou China, they are now the third largest new energy vehicle startup in China, having sold over 400,000 EV's in China as of July 2024. So over year has passed since that last stat, so that number has grown exponentially since then. The Financial Times calls them a "no-frills" EV maker", with offerings cheaper than their Chinese counterparts BYD which helped them gain market share in China, catching the likes of Tesla and soon BYD. Now while the SA market is still getting accustomed to the Chinese offerings, let alone EV's, Leapmotor which is partly owned by leading global automobile group Stellantis, they've taken the decision to introduce the C10 REEV, which is a petrol hybrid model medium SUV to the market. Offering locals a test of their EV technology but the safety net of a range extender petrol engine. After spending a week with the car, here are my thoughts on this latest addition to our market. 


DESIGN

When the C10 cruised into my driveway, I was surprised at the size of it, as I was expecting something a bit smaller, sort of the Corolla Cross size but this was substantially bigger, about the size of the Audi Q5, if not a bit bigger. The clean design reminded me of the Geely which I saw late last year of which the lines are similar but with their own added flair. There aren't many ridges or edges but rather smooth flowing panels with subtle and soft curves that make the car look futuristic and elegant. It is a handsome looking car, I cannot deny that, the front LED headlights sit recessed into the front facia almost making it look like it was carved into the the body work. The slim grille that connects the two headlamps provides a subtle break in the body work with a straight edge difusser to make the front face more pronounced. There is a curvature to the bumper that folds into the body which just adds more character. The profile of the car is sleek with recessed door handles that continue the minimalist look with a black badge protruding from the front just above the wheel arch with the Leapmotor branding on it. The 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are standard on the "Design" version of the C10 are really eye-catching. The rear is more of what you expect, clean, smooth and a solid light bar that runs across the back with a design very similar to that of the Porsche Cayenne. In fact, at a quick glance of the rear, some might mistake it for the German sports SUV. 


PERFORMANCE

While Leapmotor are known for their EV's in China, the C10 REEV is a PHEV, meaning it has an electric plug in motor as well as an internal combustion engine but while most PHEV's use the electric motor as a slave with the master being the ICE, with the C10 its the opposite. If you have enough charge, it will use the electric motor for most part of your drive. Hence giving you a total range with a full tank of fuel and fully battery of 970km! The switch over from petrol to electric is seamless and only can be felt on the highway when extra power is required where the all too familiar groan of the CVT kicks in. The dual power plants are broken into a 158kW electric motor that punches our which is rear wheel driven that has a 28.4kwh battery and gives you a pure electric range of 145km on a full charge. The ICE part of the car sits up front with a 1.5L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine that has 63kW and 125Nm of torque, this is the sort of engine you'd find in a small C-Segment car. It has a 50L petrol tank so quite big but don't ask me how to open the fuel car for it as I'll explain that further in the next paragraph. The vehicle feels solid and steady on the road, with minimal body roll and extremely smooth on most surfaces. The steering wheel is light and rear active making easy work of controlling this big car on the road. I didn't take it on any gravel road but I feel with its raised suspension and big profile tyres, it would make light work of it. 


COMFORT

The C10 is big, its spacious, its futuristic and most importantly, its comfortable. Like most of the Chinese cars, the brief for the interior seems to be standard "Big infotainment screen in excess of 10-inches, small instrument screen behind the steering wheel, little to no buttons, and floating center console with hard to reach USB ports". I get the whole futuristic thing but there's certain things about the C10 that annoyed me, a lot. For starters, the key, its an NFC card that only unlocked and locks the car from the driver side mirror. It had no proximity sensor which also means that there isn't comfort access for opening the tailgate when you are carrying a lot of things in your hands. With the cover on the car, it also made it tricky to get the card to read on the mirror. Once in the car, the second thing that annoyed me, was adjusting the side mirrors, no physical buttons meant going into the menu on the massive display screen, when you eventually find the sub-menu to adjust the mirrors, you have to use the little dials on the steering wheel to move the mirrors on either side. Extremely frustrating especially when you are trying to do this while driving. Then comes the climate control, works like a charm, dispelling even Durban's harsh humid conditions but when you want to change the direction of the airflow, you met with another conundrum, there isn't any physical lourves to adjust, how do you do it? Yes, you guessed it, its on that magic big screen, granted this one was much easier to access and it was pretty cool to just move your finger to show which direction you want the the air to go but all of that doesn't compare to the biggest gripe I have with the car, THERE IS NO MOBILE APPLICATIONS! Yes, no Apple Car Play, no Android Auto! in 2026?! Really?!!!! Well enough of the complaining, lets talk about the nice things, the seats were ultra comfy and have heating and ventilation, the ambient lighting is subtle and has a nice "rhythm" feature which changes colour to the beat of the music you are listening too. The electric seats are quite nice to use and easy to save for driver memory. The panoramic roof is large and the tint lets in the light without the heat. The driving safety sensors are not as pedantic as the other Chinese cars. The infotainment screen is easy to use and the vehicle menu gives you quite a comprehensive breakdown on the driving stats but I wish it had a graphic to show you when you are using the electric motor and when you are using the petrol engine. 


VERDICT

For it's first model to hit the roads in South Africa, the C10 REEV is a decent offering, the thing that will appeal to most is the range of the car. 970km is quite impressive and the overall package is nice apart from those few grips I shared about, but I realised I forgot two more, to start the car, you need to place the NFC card on the wireless charging mat while pushing on the break, while it worked most of the time, some times I found myself fighting with the car to start. The car has a premium feel to it which I loved, the design is different to what we are used to and looks more on the sophisticated side instead of being brash and in your face. The drive is great and I'm sure on long distances it will perform extremely well. While some in the industry said they feel this car was rushed, I think it was just short-sightedness from the brand to not see what the local market liked and adapted that to their offering but they rather chose to just give us what they think we wanted, or hoped we would ignore those short-comings with some fancy things. The price tag for this model is quite high, with it being just shy of 800K, so it's hard to ignore those factors when you are paying European money for something coming out of China.

Bucket Tech: Geely South Africa


This week saw the re-introduction of Geely to the South African market, the Chinese OEM was in our country around the 2010 World Cup time, with their smaller B-Segment cars, most popular being the LC. While these offered a cheaper alternative to consumers, the Japanese and Korean offerings in these segments proved to be the popular choice and ultimately put an end to Geely's time in the country. However, with the surge in the market from various other Chinese brands, Geely has decided to re-enter our market but with a bolder and better strategy than the rest. How you may ask? Well their product offering to the consumer is not only well priced but different to the others. Geely South Africa isn't waiting to test the market as they coming in strong offering their hybrid and full electric models in the form of the EM-i5 and E5 SUV's.


Chinese cars have shaken the market world over, offering great vehicles, loaded with tech and extras at almost half the price of its European counterparts, this left consumers asking why they should be paying the extra prices for brands they know when these seem good and offer so much more. While this is true, many soon began to learn of the shortcomings of these cars. While the build quality and engines are strong, they were not light on fuel at all. Even the smallest offerings from them were giving average fuel consumption of over 10L per 100km. For a 1.6 litre engine, that was unheard of and quite heavy for ones pocket. So while you were saving a lot on the price of the car, you were slowly paying for it at the pumps.  While some of the OEM's are learning the downside to their CVT gearboxes which are more suited to the Asian countries, many are bringing in the models with DCT boxes now to ease the heavy fuel efficiency figures and to their credit, it's good to see that they taking the consumers concerns seriously. 


Geely have opted to take another approach, while many still prefer ICE over EV, mainly due to the pricing, there is no denying that people would rather have cheaper alternatives to choose from and that is exactly what Geely are doing. Providing the market with an EV that is not only affordable but one that comes with a great battery and tech that gives a range of up to 430km. The E5 which is Geely's first full electric offering to the country was the star of the launch. With it's clean lines, smooth body work and eye catching LED's, it stood proud center stage. The E5 will be offered in two model trims, namely, the Aspire and Apex. Both are powered by a front-mounted electric motor that produces 160kW and 320Nm of torque, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds for the Apex and 7.1 seconds for the Aspire.. The battery that powers this car is a 60.22kWh lithium-iron phosphate.


While this is the model that gained the most interest, the model that would probably see the most sales is the EM-i5 Hybrid as it offers the best of both worlds. With a 1.5L, 4-cylinder petrol engine that proves 73kW and 125Nm of torque that works in tandem with an electric motor that provides 160kW and 320Nm of torque, the total system output equates to 193kW. The EM-i5 has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 8.0 seconds and the model like the E5 is available in two variants being the Aspire and Apex. The battery in the EM-i5 is an 18.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery that can give a pure electric range of 83km but combined with the petrol engine can extend the EM-i5 range to 943km! This is better than anything we have in the market at the moment. 


The interiors of the Geely's are well equipped with both models coming with a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that user interface is more designed to smart phone use and feels with gestures that mimic the the ones you use on the phone. The instrument cluster is a 10.2-inch screen that provides the usual driver info. The rest of the cabin is pretty similar to everything else out of China but the quality of materials used in the Geely's are substantially better. I particularly like the leather seats with its cool design stitching and shape which contours to any body type. The minimalist look is great which not much buttons apart from the dial for driving modes and ventilation controls. I will need to spend time with it to see how it fairs on the road.

Bucket Seat: OMODA and JAECOO PHEV efficiency endurance drive


OMODA and JAECOO are embarking on an electrified adventure with the all-new C9 and J7 plug-in hybrid SUVs, which are due in South Africa later this year. 14 PHEVs (4 C9s and 10 J7s) will set off a long-distance trip between Cape Town and Gqeberha to prove their efficiency, combined petrol-electric range, and comfort and driving experience over several days.  The objective? To travel more than 1,100 km - without charging or refuelling any vehicles along the way. While this may seem like a tall order in many SUVs, the C9 and J7 PHEVs boast exceptional range thanks to their electrified drivetrains. 


28 journalists and guests from Australia, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia will depart Cape Town in electrified SUVs. Over four days, they will travel to the Addo Elephant Park, enjoying a specially curated trip themed after the natural beauty of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces.  The trip starts on 22 February in Cape Town, with the range drive beginning the following day. The drive is set against an Ocean/Beach theme. As the convoy of electrified OMODAs and JAECOOs heads towards Gqeberha, drivers and passengers will be immersed in a Forest, Flora, and Fauna theme inspired by the natural beauty of the Garden Route. On the final day, 25 February, the journey will take on a Bush and Safari theme, concluding at the iconic Addo Elephant Park.


“Our upcoming endurance drive is more than just a long-distance journey—it’s an opportunity to demonstrate the impressive efficiency, performance, and comfort of the OMODA C9 and JAECOO J7 plug-in hybrids,” commented Tony Liu, CEO of OMODA & JAECOO South Africa. “Covering over 1,100 km without refuelling or recharging highlights the capability of our electrified drivetrains while giving drivers a chance to experience the beauty of South Africa’s diverse landscapes from behind the wheel of cutting-edge vehicles.” The J7 PHEV is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a 3 DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission) that integrates an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 255 kW and 525 N.m of torque. An 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery provides a WLTP-estimated all-electric range of 90 km, providing a driving range of 1,200 km. When connected to a DC fast charger, the battery can be recharged from 30-80% in just 20 minutes. 


The range-topping C9 PHEV takes performance to the next level. While the standard C9 is equipped with a 2.0-litre turbopetrol engine, the PHEV variant features a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine that, together with a 3 DHT and three electric motors, delivers a remarkable 440 kW and 915 N.m of torque. This enables the C9 to accelerate like a performance car while maintaining the refinement and composure the C9 has become known for. The WLTP-estimated all-electric range is 150 km, pushing the total range to 1,100 km. When plugged into a DC fast charger, the C9 PHEV can replenish its battery pack from 30-80% in 25 minutes.

Bucket Seat: Range Rover Sport P400e PHEV


Range Rover, the epitome of a luxury SUV and it's legacy echoes this as for years British manufacturer Land Rover kept this sub brand of theirs delivering only the best to its customers. In recent times, not much has changed and the line-up has increased with the addition of the Evoque and Velar which fell under this sub brand, it also gave birth to the Range Rover Sport which as it's name suggests, a sportier version of the Range Rover. The Coupe like SUV had more agile look, offered a different driving style and became quite popular world over. Locally, it even is a status symbol for the rich and powerful but deep down inside, it still has that heart for the off road. Hence when Land Rover decided to launch Plug-In Hybrid variants of these cars, many would wonder how they would fair. A month ago I had the change to drive one for about a week and to was an eye opener for me. 


DESIGN

There is no noticeable design differences between a standard Range Rover Sport and this one, apart from the charging port in the front grille. The PHEV models come in under the face-lift range of the the Range Rover line-up which see's  modular LED daytime running lights fall away with a solid outline line. There are other subtle changes to the car and cabin in the face lift but I'll dive into that a bit later. While the Sport model is more sportier, the presence still remains as it is much larger than other SUV's on the market. It was the first model in the new design language from Land Rover and it still looks the part today. Apart from being a very attractive looking car, it is rather practical too which is why it is so popular with many. The interior cabin design is clean, elegant and luxurious. The center control panels feature two large touch screen displays which control the various functions of the car. There is added brushed aluminium to the front and back of the car to enhance its off-road ability. 


PERFORMANCE

A plug-in hybrid SUV, yes, not uncommon but not something you would consider in a hurry. Why? SUV's are big, heavy and would need more energy to pull a round so by slapping in an electric motor with batteries, how much would you actually gain by it? Also, when hybrid cars first came out, they didn't require a plug-in charging system, the recharge was done via kinetic energy from breaking so why the change? Well there's a whole lot of technical jargon we can delve into but it would be too long for this blog post, essentially manufacturers are installing bigger batteries which yield longer range and higher speeds that normal kinetic charging just cannot sustain, hence the need to charge from another source of power. The battery of the P400e is 13kWh which when fully charged can give you a range of 48km at non excessive speeds or acceleration. 



With the Range Rover P400e PHEV, it combined both combustion engine power with electric engine power giving you an output which has a great performance than a V6 engine with deliver. The lightweight 2.0L si4 Ingenium petrol engine and the 105kW electric motor, produce a combined engine output of 297kW. The 0-100km/h time of just 6.7 seconds. The car delivers instant torque which makes it an ultra responsive engine. It has a top speed of 220km/h and a claimed efficiency of just 2.8L/100km. While on test I managed to see the true potential of this marriage, as Range Rover points out that the car can do up to 48km/h and running on pure electric power but that is not all it does, while the petrol engine is running at higher speeds, the electric motor assists when a coasting speed is reached, thus taking less effort from the combustion engine and saving you fuel while doing so. I noticed this while making the long trek from Johannesburg to Sun City, while I didn't get close enough to the claimed fuel consumption, I did manage to get as low as 6.2L/100km which for a big car like this is generally unheard off. 


CHARGING

As mentioned before the car can charge while you in motion but the energy build up via breaking isn't sufficient to charge the entire battery, hence the over night charge is required. On the first night, having it parked in the garage, I made use of the plug point to service the cars electricity needs. It takes roughly 7 hours to charge the battery fully while in Sun City, I asked the resort if there were parking bays with plug points available, thankfully they did have at the undercover parking of the Lost City and thanks to them they were more than happy to charge it for me during my stay. The car comes with two sets of plugs, one which fits into a normal three-pin wall socket and the other for three-phase fast charging units which can be found at selected Jaguar/ Land Rover dealerships as well charging stations which are being rolled out by Jaguar around the country at major shopping malls and filling stations. 


COMFORT

There's not much to add when it comes to the comfort of the Range Rover Sport, you getting a cabin filled with high quality materials and finishes along with the best technology offered at the moment and there really isn't any other place you want to be after sitting in it. The guys saw to everything when it came to designing this interior, from adjustable arm rests for the driver and front passenger, to touch screen climate control for the cabin. There really isn't anything I can fault. Being from the Land Rover family, the car is all-wheel drive and features air suspension, which automatically adjusts to the terrain its on, so while in the North West, with the Pilanesburg National Park right next to us, it only made sense to do a self game drive with the Range. While certain parts of the park were tarred, most of it was gravel and not in the greatest condition, so here the P400e showed it's versatility as an off-roading vehicle plus with the game park having strict speed limits, most of the drive was powered by the electric motor! This proved to be a great way to see the game close up as the car virtually snuck up to each animal we encountered because the electric motor is so silent as well as emitting zero emissions in the process. 


VERDICT

Electric cars are the future of motoring, with tougher sanctions being placed on motor manufacturers to reduce their emissions on their cars, this is part of the stepping stone to a greener alternative. While many won't see the realise the true value of these cars first hand, they serve as milestones in the pursuit of this. Just from my experience, seeing what this vehicle can achieve is remarkable and if that wasn't enough, watch the Dragon challenge on YouTube where the Range Rover 400e PHEV took on the Heavens Gate on Tianmen Mountain in China. With the strides manufacturers are making in the advancements of this technology, a world with emission free cars isn't too far off in the distance.
