Bucket Tech: Geely South Africa

This week saw the re-introduction of Geely to the South African market, the Chinese OEM was in our country around the 2010 World Cup time, with their smaller B-Segment cars, most popular being the LC. While these offered a cheaper alternative to consumers, the Japanese and Korean offerings in these segments proved to be the popular choice and ultimately put an end to Geely's time in the country. However, with the surge in the market from various other Chinese brands, Geely has decided to re-enter our market but with a bolder and better strategy than the rest. How you may ask? Well their product offering to the consumer is not only well priced but different to the others. Geely South Africa isn't waiting to test the market as they coming in strong offering their hybrid and full electric models in the form of the EM-i5 and E5 SUV's.

Chinese cars have shaken the market world over, offering great vehicles, loaded with tech and extras at almost half the price of its European counterparts, this left consumers asking why they should be paying the extra prices for brands they know when these seem good and offer so much more. While this is true, many soon began to learn of the shortcomings of these cars. While the build quality and engines are strong, they were not light on fuel at all. Even the smallest offerings from them were giving average fuel consumption of over 10L per 100km. For a 1.6 litre engine, that was unheard of and quite heavy for ones pocket. So while you were saving a lot on the price of the car, you were slowly paying for it at the pumps.  While some of the OEM's are learning the downside to their CVT gearboxes which are more suited to the Asian countries, many are bringing in the models with DCT boxes now to ease the heavy fuel efficiency figures and to their credit, it's good to see that they taking the consumers concerns seriously.

Geely have opted to take another approach, while many still prefer ICE over EV, mainly due to the pricing, there is no denying that people would rather have cheaper alternatives to choose from and that is exactly what Geely are doing. Providing the market with an EV that is not only affordable but one that comes with a great battery and tech that gives a range of up to 430km. The E5 which is Geely's first full electric offering to the country was the star of the launch. With it's clean lines, smooth body work and eye catching LED's, it stood proud center stage. The E5 will be offered in two model trims, namely, the Aspire and Apex. Both are powered by a front-mounted electric motor that produces 160kW and 320Nm of torque, with a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds for the Apex and 7.1 seconds for the Aspire.. The battery that powers this car is a 60.22kWh lithium-iron phosphate.

While this is the model that gained the most interest, the model that would probably see the most sales is the EM-i5 Hybrid as it offers the best of both worlds. With a 1.5L, 4-cylinder petrol engine that proves 73kW and 125Nm of torque that works in tandem with an electric motor that provides 160kW and 320Nm of torque, the total system output equates to 193kW. The EM-i5 has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 8.0 seconds and the model like the E5 is available in two variants being the Aspire and Apex. The battery in the EM-i5 is an 18.4kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery that can give a pure electric range of 83km but combined with the petrol engine can extend the EM-i5 range to 943km! This is better than anything we have in the market at the moment.

The interiors of the Geely's are well equipped with both models coming with a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment screen that user interface is more designed to smart phone use and feels with gestures that mimic the the ones you use on the phone. The instrument cluster is a 10.2-inch screen that provides the usual driver info. The rest of the cabin is pretty similar to everything else out of China but the quality of materials used in the Geely's are substantially better. I particularly like the leather seats with its cool design stitching and shape which contours to any body type. The minimalist look is great which not much buttons apart from the dial for driving modes and ventilation controls. I will need to spend time with it to see how it fairs on the road.

Pricing for the Geely EM-i5 and E5 are as follows:

 Price

 E5 EM-i    Aspire

 R599,999.00

 E5 EM-i    Apex

Bucket Seat: Hyundai Sante Fe Hybrid

It feels like the other day when the Koreans entered the market with cars much cheaper than the European and Japanese makes and offering a whole lot more. People were naturally skeptical about the products but since grew to love them, fast forward to current day and there's a new country that is starting to dominate the markets with their brands and that is China. The Koreans have long established themselves and people love their offerings but the Chinese models being much more cheaper, bolder in designs and offering loads more tech just makes them hard to ignore, but what have their Asian neighbors who once enjoyed a large chunk of the market share doing about this "invasion", Hyundai still remains one of the world's largest motoring manufacturers and have a variety of models across the segments to rival just about anything from any brand but they too have been feeling the heat coming from China. I got to spend time with the latest Sante Fe to see if this model squares up to the competition.

DESIGN

The latest Santa Fe marks a bold shift in Hyundai’s styling direction: it trades soft curves for a more boxy, rugged, and squared-off look, reminiscent in places of upscale off-road machines. Key design features include prominent H-pattern LED daytime-running lights and tail lamps, in fact the H is so prominent in the front, I challenged people to count how man H's they could find! I lost count because there were so many! The squared wheel arches, wide-set 20-inch alloys, and a bluff front grille that lends it a strong road presence. From the side and rear, the angular roofline, large rear quarter windows, and pronounced roof rails emphasize its “tough family hauler” aesthetic. It's more masculine and rugged than previous iterations, and while that may please some, others may find the styling polarizing. Inside, the cabin steps up significantly in terms of luxury and modernity. Expect dual 12.3-inch curved displays (one for the digital instrument cluster, one for infotainment), soft-touch surfaces, Alcantara or synthetic leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and thoughtful layout touches like plentiful USB-C ports, wireless charging, and well-placed storage cubbies.

PERFORMANCE

In South Africa, the launch model is a hybrid AWD “Hybrid Elite” trim: a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with a 44 kW electric motor delivers about 175 kW (system output) and 367 Nm of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. There are selectable drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart—and an AWD system with specialized terrain settings like mud, snow, and sand. These help adapt the car to different driving conditions.  Hyundai claim a fuel efficiency average of around 7.5 l/100 km, but real-world driving with multiple occupants tends to hover more toward 8.6 l/100 km. As is typical for large SUVs, actual economy depends heavily on driving style and load. I must say though, it's the first hybrid drive-train I've driven from Hyundai and its near perfect, for such a big car to propel the electric engine really does well to cope with the short distance runs. I wish I had it a big longer to take it on a long road trip to see how it fairs but alas, my time with it was short.

COMFORT

The Sante Fe remains a big SUV, with ample amount of space for most of its occupants, I say most because we will discuss the third row seating in a bit. The ride and handling lean firmly toward comfort: the suspension is tuned to absorb road imperfections well, and onboard refinement is strong. Engine noise is well suppressed in most scenarios; the transition between electric and petrol modes in the hybrid setup is smooth and largely unobtrusive. Some criticisms exist around shift behaviour (more for non-hybrid turbo/ICE versions) and tightness in the third row legroom when fully occupied. As a true seven-seater, the Santa Fe offers good space for the first and second rows. The third row is usable—especially for children or smaller adults—for shorter trips. Legroom, headroom, and seat height have been improved compared to past generations.  When the third row is up, trunk space drops notably; folding it (and then the second row) opens up a large, versatile cargo area, great for family travel or larger loads.  Top trims bring amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats, dual sunroof, ambient lighting, a powerful Bose sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, powered tailgate, rear window curtains, and a host of driver-assistance and safety aids. The build quality feels premium, with quiet cabin insulation and materials that give a more upscale feel than older Santa Fe's. While usable, third-row seating is best suited to children or shorter trips for adults. It’s less spacious and the headroom/legroom don’t match the second row, also with the seats up means less luggage space.

VERDICT

The new Hyundai Santa Fe 7-Seater is a compelling choice for families who want space, comfort, and modern tech wrapped in a bold and purposeful design. Its hybrid powertrain delivers a nice balance of performance and efficiency, especially in everyday driving. The design and feature set push it closer to luxury territory without straying into exorbitant price tiers. However, if you regularly carry seven tall adults, demand maximum luggage space with all seats in place, or want razor-sharp, sporty handling, then you might want to explore rivals to see if those trade-offs favour you more. The latest Santa Fe is a solid evolution—not just a facelift. It firmly stakes its claim among premium family SUVs by leaning into bold design, roomy interiors, and well-judged hybrid performance. For most families, it strikes a very attractive balance between utility, comfort, and style.

Bucket Seat: BMW Neue Klasse iX3

BMW presents the first series-produced Neue Klasse model. The new-generation BMW iX3 is a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that gives customers their first on-the-road taste of a whole new era of Sheer Driving Pleasure. An all-new design language gives the car a character-rich appearance that faithfully conveys the technological progress made by the new model. With sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, a range of up to 805 kilometres and a peak charging rate of 400 kW, the new BMW iX3 sets new standards for efficiency and long-distance capability. A new electronics and software architecture including four “superbrain” high-performance computers makes the first Neue Klasse model more intelligent and better equipped for the future than ever. The “Heart of Joy” drivetrain and driving dynamics management technology enables unmatched handling dynamism and precision, while the latest systems for automated driving optimise symbiotic human-vehicle interaction.

The sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology developed for the Neue Klasse comprises highly efficient electric motors, fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells, and 800V technology. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors, which together generate output of 345 kW and 645 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h. Its electric all-wheel-drive configuration consists of an extensively upgraded electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) with particularly high levels of efficiency at the rear axle and, at the front axle, a new asynchronous motor (ASM) distinguished by its compact design and high cost efficiency. The combination of EESM and ASM is evidence of the BMW Group’s commitment to technological neutrality within electric mobility as well. The drive technology developed for the Neue Klasse reduces energy losses by 40 per cent compared to fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, weight by 10 per cent and manufacturing costs by 20 per cent.

The new high-voltage battery concept with cylindrical cells for the Neue Klasse also achieves significant advances. The energy density on a cell level is 20 per cent higher than with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, and the new concept also paves the way for a 30 per cent increase in charging speed. The cylindrical cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery (“cell to pack”), which benefits energy density and cost efficiency. Added to which, the high-voltage battery is integrated into the vehicle architecture as a structural component to minimise weight (“pack to open body”). The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive has a usable energy content of 108.7 kWh, enabling a range of up to 805 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.

The advances brought by sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology have a significant influence on the charging experience, too. A maximum charging rate of 400 kW enables users to fill their new BMW iX3 with enough energy at an 800V direct current (DC) rapid charging station to add up to 372 kilometres of range in just ten minutes. The high-voltage battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent capacity in 21 minutes. Thanks to the battery management tech with integrated switching matrix developed completely in-house by the BMW Group, the new BMW iX3 can also be charged from 400V DC stations. Upgrades to the battery preparation also help to shorten charging times. The new BMW iX3 50 xDrive can top up on alternating current (AC) at 11 kW as standard or 22 kW as an option.

A variety of measures ensures that the product carbon footprint of the new BMW iX3 50 xDrive over its full life cycle – based on a mileage of 200,000 kilometres – is 34 per cent smaller than that of its predecessor. This means that, when charged with electricity from the European energy mix, it has a smaller product carbon footprint than a comparable combustion-engined (ICE) model after around 21,500 kilometres. When charged exclusively with electricity from renewable sources, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive beats the comparable ICE model after only 17,500 kilometres (WLTP combined), allowing customers to potentially achieve CO₂e advantages over the ICE model in as little as one year.

Bucket Seat: Merecedes Benz EQS 680 - Maybach

Mercedes-Maybach, the legendary brand is entering a new era of unrivalled electrification - in line with Karl Maybach’s maxim: “What is good must also be beautiful. The Maybach brand is synonymous with performance, luxury, and exclusivity, now, thanks to Mercedes-Benz it is also electric. For just over a century, Maybach has meticulously handcrafted objects of desire which have led to this moment where Mercedes-Benz South Africa welcomes the arrival of a new benchmark in the all-electric luxury space – the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV Maybach.

The special exterior with the iconic upright Mercedes star on the bonnet and a striking black panel front adorned with the Maybach lettering, ensures an unmistakable appearance. The optional two-tone paintwork is also typical of the luxury brand.

Thanks to exquisite materials, perfect craftsmanship and exclusive details, the spacious interior offers a holistic comfort experience with a cocooning effect. With its consistent interpretation of Sophisticated Luxury, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV sets the new benchmark in the all-electric top-end luxury SUV segment. The South African market has been allocated a limited number of this exclusive vehicle entrenching its exclusivity amongst the most discerning of clientele.

“The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is our first all-electric, full-size luxury SUV and a testament to our vision. The interior is an emotional and stylish statement, a blend of luxury and technology in the most harmonious sense. The immense power offered by the latest electric technology ensures an effortless driving experience. Together with the innovative, progressive SUV proportions, we are completely redefining the SUV luxury of the future not just globally but locally as well.” Mark Raine Co-CEO Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

The exterior design with a front end typical of the brand, chrome accents and iconic brand emblem

Mercedes-Maybach enriches the dynamic purpose design of the EQS SUV from Mercedes-Benz with exclusive elements that give it its very own character. The renowned Mercedes star sits enthroned on the hood, defining the status. The front is characterised by the brand-typical black panel with vertical, chrome-plated trim strips in a three-dimensional depth look. The large black panel is smooth closed for the first time. The high-tech element for the radar sensors is fully integrated and no longer visible. Mercedes-Benz development succeeded in using the material indium, which is permeable to radar beams, in the entire panel area. The wafer-thin, shiny silver material is covered with a black lacquer finish. This creates a unique high-gloss black appearance with an extraordinary depth effect.

Chrome-plated, filigree slats can be found on the air intake of the bumper. The classic MAYBACH lettering is discreetly incorporated into a chrome-plated decorative strip, which forms a unit with the continuous light strip of the standard DIGITAL LIGHT headlights. The Maybach pattern with several small brand emblems can also be found in trim parts of the side bumper. DIGITAL LIGHT welcomes and says goodbye to the driver with a special light show. When the doors are opened, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV also welcomes its passengers with a Maybach emblem that is projected onto the ground next to the vehicle via the exterior mirrors.

When viewed from the side, specific features include the bold chrome surrounds on the side windows and the chrome-plated B-pillar trim. This decorative element is an integral part of the Mercedes-Maybach signature and highlights the length of the rear seating area. A Maybach emblem on the D-pillar underlines the high quality. The lettering EQS is subtly integrated into the front window triangle. The pronounced wheel arches with claddings in high-gloss black emphasise the SUV’s power and emotional presence. Appropriately, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV rolls on exclusive 21 or 22-inch alloy and forged wheels. The MAYBACH lettering can be found on the integrated, exquisitely designed wheel hub caps. Another eye-catcher are the standard running boards, which are illuminated in the dark. The treads are made of anodised aluminium, which echoes the pinstripe look of the black panel front. The Maybach emblem is also stylishly integrated here.

At the rear, the rear lights underline the exclusive character as a continuous light strip with a two-part helix. The lights are animated across the entire width. There are also chrome trim elements on the tailgate, on the rear apron and the spoiler lip, as well as the MAYBACH lettering.

The special appearance of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV also includes the brand-typical two-tone paintwork with a filigree pinstripe. It is applied by hand according to the highest quality criteria and is available in five colour combinations: high-tech silver/obsidian black, high-tech silver/nautical blue, obsidian black/selenite grey, obsidian black/Kalahari gold and velvet brown/onyx black.

Distinguished in a class of its own: automatic opening and closing doors.

AnOther exclusive feature are the automatic comfort doors at the front and rear. If the driver approaches the vehicle from the side, the recessed door handles extend from a distance of around six metres. The driver’s door opens automatically when the driver approaches the vehicle at a distance of about 1.5 metres. This exceptional welcome function can be activated and deactivated in the MBUX central display. All other doors can be opened and closed remotely via MBUX – with a simple press of the vehicle key or in the central display or the standard MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment. The driver’s door also closes automatically as soon as the brake pedal is depressed.

In each door there is an electric servomotor on the catch strap. On command of the control unit, the doors are swung open and closed in a controlled manner. To prevent damage, the system uses the ultrasonic sensors of the parking assistance systems. They are located in the bumpers and monitor the surroundings when parking. As soon as they detect an obstacle, additional information from the cameras in the exterior mirrors is used. When opening the doors, the system considers any detected obstacles. Proximity sensors in the doors are also active when the vehicle is stationary. They scan the surroundings while opening.

The interior design is a fusion of tradition and avant-garde luxury

The design of the interior also consistently follows the Maybach credo “What is good must also be beautiful”. A highlight for the front passengers is the standard MBUX Hyperscreen with “zero layer” and Mercedes-Maybach specific start-up animations on all three displays. The overall visual appearance is specially designed for the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV in an elegant deep blue. The numerous exclusive features include the animated display of the instrument cluster in “MAYBACH” mode. The pointers in the two tubes are designed like a silk scarf that moves elegantly in the wind according to the speed and driving style. At the same time, the digits change their size and are dynamically faded in or out. The surrounds for the round instruments are in rose gold, which is typical of the brand. An alternative display form to the tubes is the sporty “Pure EV” style. A three-dimensional performance bar conveys the respective driving status (driving, accelerating, charging).

The central display starts with the familiar home screen and the so-called “zero layer”. In this basic setting, the navigation map dominates. The driver can carry out 80 percent of the most common interactions directly without changing the application. The system reacts situationally and is personalised with intelligent suggestions and forward-looking offers.

The rear passengers experience the same extensive range of infotainment and comfort features with two 11.6-inch displays on the backrests of the front seats. With the standard MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment, content can be shared quickly and easily on the various displays. It is also possible to select and modify the navigation destinations from the rear seats. The standard equipment also includes the MBUX rear tablet, which can also be used outside the vehicle, and the MBUX Interior Assist.

Natural materials made with perfect craftsmanship create a stylish contrast to the high-tech look. Natural woods are available as trim parts: MANUFAKTUR brown open-pore birch wood and brown open-pore MANUFAKTUR walnut wood, as well as MANUFAKTUR piano lacquer black flowing lines. The Mercedes‑Maybach EQS SUV comes standard with Exclusive Nappa leather in the warm colours espresso brown/balao brown pearl. Macchiato beige/bronze brown pearl is optionally available. For an even more sophisticated look, Maybach MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Nappa leather is available as an option in crystal white/silver grey pearl. The leather in all interior colours comes from sustainable processing.

The Maybach emblem, which is integrated at various points as a design element, underscores the high-quality appearance that is typical of the brand. It adorns the stainless steel pedal system, the cushions on the headrests, the front seat backrests and, as a projection, the footwell in the rear. In conjunction with the first-class rear, it can also be found on the wood trim between the rear seats. When the boot is open, it can also be seen on the inner lining of the tailgate. The brand lettering differentiates the steering wheel and welcomes all passengers on the stainless steel door sills in illuminated form.

Resource-saving luxury: Mercedes-Maybach introduces vegetable-tanned Nappa leather

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is the first model from Mercedes-Benz AG to be fitted with vegetable-tanned leather. Among others, coffee bean shells are used as tanning agents. The water used for tanning is conducted in a closed circuit and flows back into natural bodies of water after recycling. The fat liquoring agents used in tanning are also exclusively plant-based. The sustainably processed leather is not preserved with salt. This saves around 45 kilograms of salt per vehicle with leather seats. New upcycling products such as compostable flowerpots, insulating foams or decking boards are created from the “by-products” of tanning. The sustainably processed leather is therefore resource-saving. The coffee farmers also benefit as they receive a second income from selling the coffee bean shells.

Mercedes-Benz has defined binding criteria for sustainably processed real leather. An important procurement requirement for suppliers is that the leather supply chain must be free from any form of illegal deforestation. The grazing areas must not contribute to the endangerment or loss of natural forests. In this context, the partners must disclose their entire supply chain from the farm region to the end product. The leather skins may only come from animals that are kept in a species-appropriate manner. Only vegetable or alternatively sustainable tanning agents that are completely chrome-free may be used for tanning. For the refined leather, Mercedes-Benz requires its partners to carry out an eco-balance across all stages of the value-added process (Life Cycle Assessment).

Mercedes-Maybach wants to combine luxury with sustainability. In the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, a number of parts and components are made from resource-saving materials. For example, the interior is covered with Econyl carpet. It is made with a nylon yarn from recycled materials such as carpets and fishing nets. Secondary steel and recycled aluminium are also included. The use of recycled materials is an important measure on the way to decarbonisation. Added to this is the net carbon-neutral production of the Mercedes‑Maybach EQS SUV and its battery at the Mercedes-Benz plants in Alabama, USA. The aim of Mercedes-Benz is to at least halve CO₂ emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared to 2020 levels.

The rear: exclusive lounge with a holistic comfort experience for all the senses

In the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, the combination of exquisite materials, perfect craftsmanship and exclusive details creates a self-contained feel-good atmosphere for all the senses - the so-called cocooning effect. Like the front seats, the standard Executive seats are equipped with ventilation, massage function and neck and shoulder heating. There is also a calf massage and the Chauffeur Package. As soon as the right rear passenger chooses the reclining position, the front passenger seat automatically moves forward to the chauffeur position. The massage programmes are also available as part of ENERGIZING COMFORT.

With the equipment First-Class Rear, the front centre console continues like a floating band to the rear seats. It was redesigned for the all-electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. Wooden trim adorns the rear storage compartment for the first time. It complements the wooden trim on the backs of the front seat backrests and between the rear seats, visually reinforcing the cocooning feel-good atmosphere. Also new is a projector in the centre console that discreetly projects the Maybach emblem onto the floor. As in the Mercedes‑Maybach S-Class, the additional equipment includes two thermal cup holders and a shelf for the standard MBUX rear tablet. Four fast-charging USB-C ports and two HDMI interfaces also ensure that travellers can easily use their own digital devices. On request, the centre console can include two folding tables and a cooling compartment with space for champagne bottles. Matching silver-plated goblets are optional.

Diverse possibilities for individual lighting moods

A designer lamp is integrated into each of the C-pillars. The adaptive rear lighting offers additional reading lights in the grab handles and light strips in the headlining. Both the brightness and the size and position of the light spots can be adjusted. At the same time, a wide range between precise work and relaxed lounge light is possible. The setting of the light colour automatically follows the human daily rhythm but can also be adjusted by hand. Added to this is the Ambient Lighting, which runs through the entire vehicle, right up to the roof liner and behind the rear seats. In addition, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV contains Active Ambient Lighting with 253 individually controllable LEDs and 64 individually selectable colours. These include the Maybach-specific colour schemes of Rose Gold White and Amethyst Glow. The diverse options for individual lighting moods also underline the cocooning effect. The brand-typical “Welcome” presentation welcomes the passengers with a special light play: a carpet of light runs across the vehicle and particularly sets the scene for the rear doors.

Air quality: pollutants stay outside

ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus with HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air) ensures good air quality as standard. The air quality sensor supports the fresh air recirculation switch. The air-conditioned circulating air is filtered several times in circulating air mode. The HEPA filter effectively cleans the incoming outside air of fine dust, very small particles and pollen.

A special activated carbon in both the HEPA filter and the cabin filter also filters sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides as well as odours. Flushing with fresh air takes place at regular intervals. The pre-air conditioning makes it possible to clean the interior air before boarding. The particulate matter values outside and inside the vehicle are also displayed in MBUX. They are listed in detail in their own air quality menu. If the quality of the outside air is low, the system can also make recommendations to close the side windows or sunroof.

Active scenting: exclusive magical fragrance – also to be experienced visually

The active scenting also appeals to the sense of smell and is part of the standard AIR BALANCE Package. A special fragrance was created for the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. No.12 MOOD ebony is an extraordinary and polarising fragrance transporting one into the world of magic. It does not aim to please but to seduce. Soothing and fantasy-stimulating sandalwood gives a touch of the Orient. The combination with beguiling freesia and spicy clove evokes associations of an exotic spice market. No.12 MOOD ebony is an exclusive composition full of longing, attraction and devotion.

The sound experience: immersive music enjoyment and specific Maybach driving sound

With the standard Burmester® 4D surround sound system, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV offers the ultimate sound experience. It features the Dolby Atmos® immersive audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth. Dolby Atmos® makes it possible to place discrete audio elements or objects in a three-dimensional sound field and adapt them to any playback environment. Passengers can hear their music with a clarity equal to the artist’s original studio composition.

The sound system includes 15 speakers: two front bass speakers in the front footwell, one midrange and one tweeter in each door, two 3D speakers in the headliner, two surround speakers in the luggage compartment cover and a center speaker in the instrument panel. There are also two exciters in each seat. The direct reproduction of structure-borne noise in the seats makes the listening experience four-dimensional. Passengers in the front passenger seat and in the rear can also apply the 4D sound to the audio content of the headphones. The sound can be individually adjusted for each MBUX user profile.
With different sound worlds, the driving sound also becomes an acoustic experience. “Aerial Grace” is the name of the driving sound that was specially created for the all-electric Mercedes-Maybach model and can be heard in the interior. It is interactive and reacts to a dozen different parameters including accelerator pedal position, speed and recuperation. Using intelligent sound design algorithms, the sounds are calculated in real time on the amplifier of the Burmester® 4D surround sound system and played back by the loudspeakers.

The suspension: comfortable, adaptable and with a special MAYBACH driving programme

The highest standards also apply to driving comfort. The AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable damping ADS+ is standard. To increase the ground clearance, the vehicle level can be raised by up to 25 millimetres. Rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to 4.5
degrees is also standard. Alternatively, the rear wheels can be turned up to 10 degrees. This enables a turning circle of 11.0 instead of 11.9 metres, which corresponds to that of many compact models.
In addition to the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes ECO, SPORT, OFFROAD and INDIVIDUAL, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has the special MAYBACH drive programme. It replaces the classic COMFORT programme and is designed entirely for maximum driving comfort for the rear passengers. It ensures that there are only minimal body movements under the rear seats. An oscillation node is located there, so that the amplitudes are at their lowest. The MAYBACH driving programme is the standard setting.

Mercedes-Maybach customers expect the extraordinary, and we aim to exceed their high expectations. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV unites our ambition to lead in digital and electric with our focus on the luxury segment. The very first all-electric vehicle from Mercedes-Maybach complements the best technologies from Mercedes-Benz with the extra comfort and individual details that are only available from Mercedes-Maybach.” Alexandra Boavida, VP Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz South Africa

Bucket Seat: Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid

The 2023 Suzuki Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip is a notable addition to Suzuki's lineup, blending the company's rich SUV heritage with modern hybrid technology. This model promises a balanced mix of performance, efficiency, and off-road capability, aiming to cater to a wide range of drivers. Now while we are well aware of the splitting image model from the other brand available on the market, Suzuki held the trump card on keeping the hybrid engine for itself, this would make the appeal for the Suzuki slightly more beneficial to the prospective buyer over the other brand which only had the petrol offering.

DESIGN

The Grand Vitara remains one of the most attractive SUV's in its segment with modern sports  contemporary yet rugged design, featuring bold lines and a robust stance that emphasizes its off-road capabilities. The front fascia is dominated by a prominent grille flanked by sleek LED headlights, giving it a distinctive and assertive look. The AllGrip variant comes with stylish alloy wheels and underbody protection, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality for off-road enthusiasts. I'm particularly fond of the light designs both in the front and the rear with LED designs to enhance the housing they're in. The right amount of chrome to elevate the sharp lines of the front accentuate the cars presence from the front and the bi-colour paint tone with black roof gives that car an elegant look.

PERFORMANCE

The hybrid powertrain combines a 1.5L petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering a smooth and efficient performance with performance outputs of 76kW and 137Nm of torque. The transition between petrol and electric power is seamless, providing a refined driving experience thanks to the 6-speed automatic gearbox. The AllGrip all-wheel-drive system enhances traction and stability, making it capable on a variety of terrains. Whether navigating city streets or tackling off-road trails, the Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip handles with confidence and poise. One of the standout features of the 2023 Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip is its fuel efficiency. The hybrid system significantly reduces fuel consumption, making it an economical choice for daily commutes and long-distance travel. Drivers can expect impressive mileage, contributing to lower running costs and reduced environmental impact.

COMFORT

Inside, the Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip offers a well-crafted and spacious cabin. High-quality materials and a modern design ensure a comfortable and pleasant driving experience. The seats are supportive, and the driver’s seat offers a good range of adjustments to accommodate various body types. Rear passengers benefit from ample legroom and headroom, making long journeys comfortable. The cargo space is generous, with the option to fold the rear seats for additional storage.

TECHNOLOGY

Suzuki has equipped the 2023 Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip with a suite of modern technology. The infotainment system features a large touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, providing seamless connectivity. The vehicle also includes a premium sound system, Bluetooth, and USB ports. Safety features are comprehensive, with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree camera system, ensuring peace of mind on the road. Not forgetting the pop up heads up display that can be deployed when wanted and tucks away neatly above the instrument cluster on the dash.

VERDICT

The  Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip is a well-rounded SUV that successfully blends modern hybrid technology with Suzuki’s renowned off-road capability. Its stylish design, comfortable interior, advanced features, and efficient performance make it an appealing choice for a wide range of drivers. Whether you’re looking for a family vehicle, an off-road adventurer, or an eco-friendly commuter, the Grand Vitara Hybrid AllGrip stands out as a versatile and reliable option in the competitive SUV market. Coming back to its evil twin, you can see why Toyota didn't mind opting for the Hybrid option in their line-up as it would be in direct competition with one of their best selling, locally manufactured offering, the Corolla Cross Hyrbid. While the two are very different cars, seeing the price point may make many opt for the slightly bigger model.

Bucket Seat: Rolls Royce Spectre

When one thinks of Rolls Royce, words such as "Opulence", "Luxury", "Rich" come to mind. Of course one also associates it with Royalty but since there's too much drama going on at Buckingham Palace with the Windsor's, I'll exclude that one for this article as I am about to talk about something quite special from a special brand in the motoring world. Ever since the introduction of the Carbon Tax in Europe, vehicle manufacturers were forced to make their cars more green or introduce models that would have lesser impact on the environment than before. Rolls Royce had a major problem on their hand as most, if not all of their cars at the time had massive V12 engines fitted in them. They couldn't go down the route as their British counterparts Aston Martin and make a 1-litre car like the Cygnet, that would mock its very existence! Instead, with the help of their parent company BMW, Rolls Royce found innovative ways to work around this, until now that is. With the introduction of the first fully electric model named the Spectre, this would be a massive plus in their books. The Spectre was first showcased back in October 2022 with production models being ready by end of 2023. This week I was extremely fortunate enough to sample what this electric beauty has to offer and my word it is magnificent.

I think my history with electric cars has been mentioned one time too many, but I still get blown away when I see the progression in technology from the various brands. Rolls Royce being in a category I've never driven before, be it ICE or EV, I was in for something really special and you couldn't wipe the smile off my face even if you tried. Just standing and looking at the car feels special, the design of it echoes the brands styles but with a modern yet classic twist. The car exudes elegance in any angle that you look at it, the regal nature of its silhouette has onlookers shocked at its stature. Yes, it's a coupe but one that measures 5.475 meters, that is longer than the new BMW 7-series! Inspiration for the Spectre's design is drawn from worlds far beyond automotive, including haute couture, modernist sculpture, nautical design, tailoring and contemporary art. The Spectre features the widest grille ever on a Rolls Royce and the first which is illuminated, it is adorned with split headlights either side of it. The vanes of the Pantheon grille are now smoother in section and a flusher fit, designed to help guide the air around the motor car’s front. The profile of the car has classic lines from the Phantom Coupe, with the eye catching fastback rear design that mesmerizes you as the car glides by.

Stepping inside, you are greeted by a vast array of plush materials, from the shaggy pile sheep wool carpets, to real oak inserts on the dash. The long suicide doors feature a star light pattern that has over 4,000 inserts, this is married with various high quality leathers which is available in any colour of your imagination. No, really, the specification guide seems endless with the combinations available making each and every car made bespoke to the owners tastes. I've driven a lot of fancy cars that cost a pretty penny but this league is next level. I found myself flabbergasted seeing the details and feeling each and every panel and trim on the interior. There's no detail spared, and it shouldn't given the price tag. While the user interface and some of the controls feel familiar from the Germans, the the comfortable seats and plush surroundings make up for it. The car has loads of tech, all of which come from BMW but it has a few tricks up its sleeve too, the automated closing doors is definitely a feature I could get used to and a handy trick is that when the driver presses the brake pedal, the door automatically starts to close.

In 1900, Rolls-Royce co-founder, Charles Rolls, prophesised an electric future for the motor car. Having acquired an electric vehicle named The Columbia Electric Carriage, he foresaw its suitability as a clean, noiseless alternative to the internal combustion engine – providing there was sufficient infrastructure to support it. 120 years later, that vision is finally here. Rolls Royce boasted the quietest cabin noise as they viewed it as disruptive to listen to the mechanics of the engine in the car whilst driving. They strive for this silence and to an extent much of their line-up delivered through many sound proof layers in the engine bay, but with an all electric setup, its not required as the silence is guaranteed. The two electric motors pump out and equivalent power output of 577 horses and a max torque of 900Nm which gives it a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds! Bear in mind this car weights just less than 3,000kgs thanks to the lithium iron batteries which have a 102kWh capacity and fully charges in 95 minutes using a DC fast charger. The maximum reported range from a full charge is 520km, this includes regeneration through braking. The term "floating on clouds" come to mind when driving this car, as it glides along any surface with ease, the rear wheel steering help navigate the long chassis with ease.

The Spectre is Rolls Royce introduction into the EV era and my word is it something, if this is the start the company is making into an all electric future, it does look like a bright one from the company. Starting price for the Spectre is in the region of R15 million.
