Bucket Seat: Mercedes-Benz CLE200 Cabriolet

Over the past decade, Mercedes-Benz model line-up was quite a vast one, they had models from A up to the S Class, and with that came derivatives in the cross over segment and the more sporty coupe segment, over the last few years when sales took a knock, the brand decided to re-look at some of the models in their offering and condense it a bit. Two of those models were the C-Class Coupe/ Cabriolet and the E-Class Coupe/ Cabriolet. While both had their own appeal, there was marginal differences to them in the skeletons of the car. Last year Mercedes-Benz launched the CLE Class, with the Coupe hitting our shores in the first quarter of the year and the topless version towards the latter half. While I got to experience the hard top during its launch in KZN, the appeal to drive a cabriolet is always tempting especially when you live in Durban, where its sunny all year round apart from the days there is an important cricket match being played in town. So Merc sent me the CLE 200 Cabriolet not too long ago to spend a few days with and I was relishing the opportunity to get behind the wheel of it.

DESIGN

The CLE200 Cabriolet is a visual stunner, with the roof up or down, this particular model finished in white with black details was a looker of note. With a long, sculpted bonnet, wide stance, and coupe-inspired lines, it carries a confident road presence that turned heads everywhere I went. Up front, the iconic grille with a central Mercedes star is flanked by sharp Digital Light LED headlights, while the back end features slim taillights and a fluid shoulder line that enhances its low-slung profile. The fabric soft-top folds neatly in around 20 seconds at speeds up to 60km/h, giving you that breezy open-air feel without fuss. Its design bridges the sportiness of the old C-Class Coupe with the premium grace of the E-Class. This model came in the AMG package which included 19-inch alloys and subtle chrome accents add to the classy yet athletic vibe. A mature, timeless design that turns heads, whether roof up or down.

PERFORMANCE

Under the bonnet, the CLE200 Cabriolet features a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48V mild hybrid system. With a total power output of 150kW and 320Nm torque, all perfectly mated with the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox makes for tonnes of fun, whether you're taking a causal cruise with the roof down or chasing the wind. It achieves a 0–100km/h time of a brisk 7.5 seconds with its top speed limited to 236km/h. The mild hybrid system offers an additional 17kW of boost during acceleration, improving efficiency and responsiveness. While not a fire-breathing sports car, it’s quick enough for most drivers and impressively refined.  Rear-wheel drive delivers balance and composure on the open road with it giving you confidence to attack corners and accelerate out of long bends with ease. The CLE200 excels as a grand tourer – smooth, predictable, and comfortable on long drives. Sport and Comfort modes adapt the throttle and suspension feel nicely with the driver and the passenger not feeling uneasy at all. While its not the quickest engine in the Mercedes arsenal, it sure still does deliver plenty of fun for the driver.

COMFORT

Comfort is one of the CLE200’s standout traits – especially for a cabriolet, from the existing diamond stitched leather seats which were finished in a tan colour, the cars interior is a carbon copy to that of the CLE Coupe and the C-Class Sedan with an additional party trick which allows the center infotainment screen to tilt should the suns glare affect it when driving with the top down.  Interior Materials feature soft-touch leathers, open-pore wood or aluminium trim, and ambient lighting create a premium cabin as with all their cars. The front seats a heated and power-adjustable  with optional neck-level Airscarf system – a true must for winter top-down drives as I made plenty of use of during Durban's "cold" winter weather.  A wind deflector and acoustic fabric roof keep noise levels impressively low, even on highways. The cars aerodynamics were such that I hardly found myself using the wind deflector, even at high-speeds with the roof down. The ride quality is refined, especially when fitted with adaptive damping. Mercedes has also improved cabin insulation, making it a serene space with the roof closed. The rear seats are best suited for kids or shorter adults as legroom is limited and confined to the driver and font passengers requirements. Boot space is around 385 litres (roof up), dropping slightly when the top is stowed, there is a handy drop shelf that guides you on how much you can load the car when the roof is down so weekends away is still possible. 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen infotainment system running the latest MBUX software is a breeze to use, with wireless phone connectivity and multiple other menu options to play with, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with customizable layouts is also a treat to look at. The car also comes with the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant to control just about anything in the car. This model came fitted with the optional Burmester 3D sound system for audiophile-level audio, this made for perfect music playback when driving with the top down. Some of the key driver assistance features include Adaptive cruise control (Distronic), Lane-keeping assist, 360-degree camera system, Blind spot monitoring and Traffic sign recognition with heads up display.

VERDICT

The Mercedes-Benz CLE200 Cabriolet is an exceptional lifestyle vehicle that prioritizes comfort, class, and elegance over outright sportiness. It’s best suited to buyers who enjoy open-top luxury motoring, scenic weekend drives, and advanced tech in a beautifully crafted package. It might not be the most powerful cabriolet in the range, but for many, its smooth power delivery, relaxing ride, and stunning looks will be more than enough. If you looking for something with a bit more oomph, perhaps the CLE 300 is more suited for you, with a possible AMG variant that could make its appearance in the country. Compared to its rivals, I think the Merc wins by a long shot, if they all had to be parked side by side, the CLE will definitely get all the attention.

Bucket Seat: Mercedes-Benz E200

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has long been one of the most desirable business sedan in the world. In South Africa, the E class enjoyed decent sales in the segment compared to its rivals over the years as it was one of the more preferred "business sedans" on offer but the previous model seemed to have lost that charm of which  Mercedes-Benz has been known for in the past. I was invited last year to sample the latest version of the E-Class, at thee launch, I went in with a lot of skepticism thinking that the same mistakes would’ve been repeated, but I was very wrong. I was blown away with the package that was in front of me and even though it was just a short driving trip you could tell Merc had done something special with his car, fast forward a year later I finally got to spend five days with the new E-Class to see exactly what they’ve done and why this echoes the return of the Mercedes-Benz of old.

DESIGN

The design of the new E-Class is stunning, the car just exudes elegance when you look at it. Merc got all the things right with this one, the lines, the details and the general look of it, I can only imagine how it must look on the road when I was driving past everyone. From the front end you are greeted by the large star-studded grille with the huge Mercedes-Benz logo being front and prominent, the grille actually illuminates at night which just adds so much more character to the front end. The headlights are fitted with digital LED lighting, which give a little dance every time the car is started. The design of the headlamps are synonymous to the kidney styled ones of the past but with a modern twist. Moving along to the profile of the car, the silhouette gives it that limousine look, and long wheel base versions of this car must be stunning to look at from the side but this model does look great too. The large 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels really enhance the cars stance but doesn't take away from the luxury look of it. The colour in which this particular car came in is called "Velvet Brown" and let me tell you, in the winters setting sun just looks so sophisticated, the way it shimmers in the dusk makes you think it's more than just an E-Class. Moving onto the rear of the car, some might feel the design of the tail lights are a bit gimmicky with the Star pattern but I think they look cool. Also the way the design is well rounded at the rear gives the E a very soft and subtle look from the back. The chrome accents at the boot lid are matched with the chrome twin faux tail pipes. The interior of the car is well designed, giving a good blend of ergonomics and luxury.

PERFORMANCE

The E200 comes powered with a 2-litre, 4 cylinder petrol combustion engine that is assisted by an electric hybrid power plant which aids the ICE motor when required. While the engine provides 150kW of power, the electric motor adds an additional 17kW of power to it, giving the combined power output of 167kW. The torque factor comes in at 320Nm which plentiful to get this 1,800kg beast of the line. While the E200 isn't a full hybrid per-say, the common term now being used is "mild hybrid", kinda like the Nando's sauce which as a hint of peri-peri but not too much, it does play a massive role in not only the performance but the fuel economy too. The E-Class could not have come at a better time for me as I had a nice long distance trip planned for it first up, a return journey of about 750km and on the first leg going up country, the car performed brilliantly, the ride was superb and the changing of the gears in that 9G-Tronic transmission was like a symphony in action. The thing that struck me the most was the fuel economy, seeing that this is a big car, a 2-litre, 4 cylinder engine would feel the pressure when venturing up the twisty's of the KZN midlands, I imagined a lot of groaning from the motor and downshifts galore from the gearbox but nothing of the sort transpired. It was effortless and by the time I reached my destination, the fuel economy was sitting at a proud 7.3L per 100km, the return trip back to Durban gave even more impressive reading with an average of 6.1L per 100km! I clocked just over 800km on a single tank of 66-litres.

COMFORT

Now we getting to the best part of the E-Class, the comfort, I mentioned that some of the newer cars that have rolled out the Mercedes-Benz factories lacked that defining factor that made Mercedes what it was. It was more than just a status symbol, it gave the ordinary man a chance to experience luxury at another level. While the line-up's expanded, the quality seemed to have dropped and I honestly was starting to lose hope in the brand, then this guy shows up and makes me re-consider my thinking. The essence of Merc is still not lost, it's just been kept away but I'm glad someone has found it and sprinkled it in abundance in this car. The interior is well laid out with a digital instrument cluster that gives you all relevant driving info that can be controlled from the multi-function steering wheel, it has a cool 3D button that you can toggle with the display giving you a multi-dimensional view of the various information. The centeral infotainment screen measures in at 14.4-inches, yes this thing is massive and its in high-resolution. The MBUX interface is easy to use and very fast. There's loads of menus and tools to go through in it, from sound options, to ambient lighting, to configuring driving modes and the lot. Of course the car comes with built-in mobile phone connectivity, for both Android and iOS, and there is even the AI assistant in which its ever ready to receive voice commands it can comply to. The car comes with quad zone climate control, seat heating for the driver and front passenger and both are electronically adjustable with 3 memory settings. The car came with a Burmester 3D sound system that came with 17-speakers that produces 730Watts and even had a 4D Sound experience with Dolby Digital. The quality of materials used the car were top notch, even the plastic wood grain felt like real wood! The luggage capacity measures in around 540L so plenty of space for long distance holiday trip. This particular car also came with the "super screen" extra, which is an additional 12.3 screen for the front passenger. This screen only activates when there is someone sitting in the seat. They have access to the usual MBUX menu but also can download games and video streaming apps for them to watch on, they are able to connect Bluetooth headphones to it so they can watch without disturbing the driver.

VERDICT

There's a lot more that I can say about this car that blew me away but just the fact that it brought a big smile to my face every time I got behind the wheel is enough to know that it is more than just good. While there is a very apparent decline in sales locally for the brand, which has a lot to do with pricing and competition from the east, there is no denying that there is somethings that China can't come close to and that is proper German engineering at its best. The refinement in this E-Class is next-to-none, the sophistication in almost every aspect is a true indication of the lengths the engineers went looking for perfection and achieved it. While some might say this isn't their cup of tea, this isn't tea to begin with, its Glühwein. With the E53 AMG Edition one confirmed to be heading to the country this week in limited numbers, that would probably be the Jagermeister. I kid, but take it from someone who was doubting the brand and its relevance in the motoring segment of recent, these guys still got what it takes to make a proper car and if this E-Class is anything to go by, Mercedes-Benz is going nowhere.

Bucket Seat: Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet

With the new CLE Cabriolet, Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of four-seater open-top dream cars. Expressive design, intelligent technology and upmarket equipment guarantee driving pleasure at an exclusive level. This new model is based on the sporty CLE Coupé. However, the classic fabric acoustic soft top and additional high-quality details give it a character of its own. The CLE Cabriolet combines dynamic driving characteristics with a high level of everyday comfort for year-round open-air enjoyment.

Open-air fun any time of year

The AIRCAP® electric wind deflector system and the AIRSCARF® headroom heating system are standard equipment. Both systems have been further developed. They make open-top driving in cool outside temperatures more pleasant. AIRCAP® consists of two elements: the wind deflector on the windscreen directs airflow over the occupants’ heads. It extends at the touch of a button. The automatic wind deflector behind the rear head restraints reduces turbulence more efficiently. AIRSCARF® produces even warmer airflow around the necks and throats of front-seat occupants – even in unfavourable wind conditions.

The standard-fit fabric acoustic soft top also contributes to the year-round usability of the CLE Cabriolet. It is available in the colours black, red or grey. The multi-layer structure with extensive insulation provides the basis for the best thermal comfort in all seasons. It also reduces wind and driving noise. The soft top opens and closes within 20 seconds up to a road speed of 60 km/h. For the first time, it is powered exclusively by electricity, making it even quieter. The standard-fit powered roller divider automatically separates the folded soft top from the remaining luggage compartment.

Sporty luxury in a class of its own

The freestanding 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display and the 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display in portrait format are eye-catchers in the interior. The latter can be electrically tilted from 15 to 40 degrees to prevent distracting glare when the soft top is down. Another highlight is the optional dynamic ambient lighting. Bands of light sweep from the cockpit over the doors and rear side panels to behind the rear seats. This stylish wraparound feel is enhanced by two further details: the top of the dashboard, the beltlines and the soft-top stowage lid are upholstered in black man-made nappa leather effect. Added to this is the chrome trim that runs around the entire passenger compartment.

To prevent the optional leather seats from heating up too much in the summer, they have a special coating which reflects the sun’s near-infrared rays. As a result, the leather remains up to 12 degrees cooler in direct sunlight than untreated standard leather. Even with the top closed, the interior heats up less thanks to the cool seat covers. The choice of colours offered for the sun-reflecting leather and nappa leather are: black, macchiato beige/black, tonka brown/black, power red/black and white/black. The standard AVANTGARDE Line offers ARTICO/MICROCUT man-made leather in black.

The front seats developed exclusively for the CLE have an integral sports seat design. In conjunction with the optional Burmester® 3D surround sound system, they each have two loudspeakers level with the head restraints. This creates a particularly personalised and immersive music experience with Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio close to the ear. This premium sound system has a total of 17 loudspeakers.

Generous space inside

As the largest convertible in the mid-size segment, the sporty two-door model offers a high level of long-distance comfort for four people. The dimensions are: 4,850 millimetres long, 1,861 millimetres wide, 1,424 millimetres high and a wheelbase of 2,865 millimetres. Rear passengers in particular benefit from the extra 25 millimetres on the wheelbase. Among other things, they have 72 millimetres more knee room and 19 millimetres more shoulder and elbow room. This makes the vehicle significantly more spacious than the C-Class Cabriolet.

With a volume of 385 litres (295 litres with the top down), the boot is extremely practical for everyday use. If required, this is extendable using the folding rear seat backrests. Customers can conveniently fold them down from the boot in a 60:40 split. Access to the luggage compartment is contactless and fully automatic with HANDS-FREE ACCESS. KEYLESS-GO is also part of standard equipment. The vehicle doors lock and unlock by touching the door handle.

Exceptionally interactive and customised

The entertainment offering is highly interactive and personalised. The third generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system enables third-party apps. The MBUX Entertainment package is optionally available via the Mercedes me Store. It includes internet radio, music streaming and a data package from a selected third-party provider.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, MBUX also offers a new level of personalisation with automated convenience functions. At market launch, customers will be able to use templates for standard routines. Examples include “Cold days” (seat heating switches on at a certain outside temperature) or “Date night” (romantic music plays via Bluetooth audio; the ambient lighting turns pink). Users access the templates via a carousel in the central display. They can also create their own routines, by linking several functions and conditions. They do this on the central display and the resulting routines appear under the “My routines” menu heading.

Dynamic and comfortable driving experience with a powerful, top-of-the-range six-cylinder engine

The chassis of the new CLE Cabriolet enables driving pleasure on winding roads. At the same time, it offers exceptional ride comfort on long journeys. The comfort suspension, which has been lowered by 15 millimetres, is fitted as standard. It combines a supremely comfortable ride with responsive, sporty handling. A sports suspension with an amplitude-selective damping system is available as an option.

The optional DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL suspension facilitates a highly adjustable driving experience ranging from extremely sporty to comfortable through continuous, adaptive damping front and rear. The active suspension individually controls the damping characteristics for each wheel in conjunction with the engine, transmission and steering characteristics. This takes into account the driving situation, speed and road conditions. The DYNAMIC SELECT switch gives the driver a choice between a comfortable or firmer, sportier setup.

All engines are mild hybrids. Each has an integrated starter-generator and 48-volt on-board electrical system.

“Sublime, that’s the word that I would use to describe the all-new CLE model offerings that we have made available to our customers. These are the cars that people dream about, and they do not disappoint. We have come in very competitively with our pricing and customers have unmatched choice in terms of crafting their desired CLE model to their specification.” Alex Boavida. Vice President Sales and Marketing MBSA.

Bucket Seat: Merecedes Benz EQS 680 - Maybach

Mercedes-Maybach, the legendary brand is entering a new era of unrivalled electrification - in line with Karl Maybach’s maxim: “What is good must also be beautiful. The Maybach brand is synonymous with performance, luxury, and exclusivity, now, thanks to Mercedes-Benz it is also electric. For just over a century, Maybach has meticulously handcrafted objects of desire which have led to this moment where Mercedes-Benz South Africa welcomes the arrival of a new benchmark in the all-electric luxury space – the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV Maybach.

The special exterior with the iconic upright Mercedes star on the bonnet and a striking black panel front adorned with the Maybach lettering, ensures an unmistakable appearance. The optional two-tone paintwork is also typical of the luxury brand.

Thanks to exquisite materials, perfect craftsmanship and exclusive details, the spacious interior offers a holistic comfort experience with a cocooning effect. With its consistent interpretation of Sophisticated Luxury, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV sets the new benchmark in the all-electric top-end luxury SUV segment. The South African market has been allocated a limited number of this exclusive vehicle entrenching its exclusivity amongst the most discerning of clientele.

“The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is our first all-electric, full-size luxury SUV and a testament to our vision. The interior is an emotional and stylish statement, a blend of luxury and technology in the most harmonious sense. The immense power offered by the latest electric technology ensures an effortless driving experience. Together with the innovative, progressive SUV proportions, we are completely redefining the SUV luxury of the future not just globally but locally as well.” Mark Raine Co-CEO Mercedes-Benz South Africa.

The exterior design with a front end typical of the brand, chrome accents and iconic brand emblem

Mercedes-Maybach enriches the dynamic purpose design of the EQS SUV from Mercedes-Benz with exclusive elements that give it its very own character. The renowned Mercedes star sits enthroned on the hood, defining the status. The front is characterised by the brand-typical black panel with vertical, chrome-plated trim strips in a three-dimensional depth look. The large black panel is smooth closed for the first time. The high-tech element for the radar sensors is fully integrated and no longer visible. Mercedes-Benz development succeeded in using the material indium, which is permeable to radar beams, in the entire panel area. The wafer-thin, shiny silver material is covered with a black lacquer finish. This creates a unique high-gloss black appearance with an extraordinary depth effect.

Chrome-plated, filigree slats can be found on the air intake of the bumper. The classic MAYBACH lettering is discreetly incorporated into a chrome-plated decorative strip, which forms a unit with the continuous light strip of the standard DIGITAL LIGHT headlights. The Maybach pattern with several small brand emblems can also be found in trim parts of the side bumper. DIGITAL LIGHT welcomes and says goodbye to the driver with a special light show. When the doors are opened, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV also welcomes its passengers with a Maybach emblem that is projected onto the ground next to the vehicle via the exterior mirrors.

When viewed from the side, specific features include the bold chrome surrounds on the side windows and the chrome-plated B-pillar trim. This decorative element is an integral part of the Mercedes-Maybach signature and highlights the length of the rear seating area. A Maybach emblem on the D-pillar underlines the high quality. The lettering EQS is subtly integrated into the front window triangle. The pronounced wheel arches with claddings in high-gloss black emphasise the SUV’s power and emotional presence. Appropriately, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV rolls on exclusive 21 or 22-inch alloy and forged wheels. The MAYBACH lettering can be found on the integrated, exquisitely designed wheel hub caps. Another eye-catcher are the standard running boards, which are illuminated in the dark. The treads are made of anodised aluminium, which echoes the pinstripe look of the black panel front. The Maybach emblem is also stylishly integrated here.

At the rear, the rear lights underline the exclusive character as a continuous light strip with a two-part helix. The lights are animated across the entire width. There are also chrome trim elements on the tailgate, on the rear apron and the spoiler lip, as well as the MAYBACH lettering.

The special appearance of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV also includes the brand-typical two-tone paintwork with a filigree pinstripe. It is applied by hand according to the highest quality criteria and is available in five colour combinations: high-tech silver/obsidian black, high-tech silver/nautical blue, obsidian black/selenite grey, obsidian black/Kalahari gold and velvet brown/onyx black.

Distinguished in a class of its own: automatic opening and closing doors.

AnOther exclusive feature are the automatic comfort doors at the front and rear. If the driver approaches the vehicle from the side, the recessed door handles extend from a distance of around six metres. The driver’s door opens automatically when the driver approaches the vehicle at a distance of about 1.5 metres. This exceptional welcome function can be activated and deactivated in the MBUX central display. All other doors can be opened and closed remotely via MBUX – with a simple press of the vehicle key or in the central display or the standard MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment. The driver’s door also closes automatically as soon as the brake pedal is depressed.

In each door there is an electric servomotor on the catch strap. On command of the control unit, the doors are swung open and closed in a controlled manner. To prevent damage, the system uses the ultrasonic sensors of the parking assistance systems. They are located in the bumpers and monitor the surroundings when parking. As soon as they detect an obstacle, additional information from the cameras in the exterior mirrors is used. When opening the doors, the system considers any detected obstacles. Proximity sensors in the doors are also active when the vehicle is stationary. They scan the surroundings while opening.

The interior design is a fusion of tradition and avant-garde luxury

The design of the interior also consistently follows the Maybach credo “What is good must also be beautiful”. A highlight for the front passengers is the standard MBUX Hyperscreen with “zero layer” and Mercedes-Maybach specific start-up animations on all three displays. The overall visual appearance is specially designed for the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV in an elegant deep blue. The numerous exclusive features include the animated display of the instrument cluster in “MAYBACH” mode. The pointers in the two tubes are designed like a silk scarf that moves elegantly in the wind according to the speed and driving style. At the same time, the digits change their size and are dynamically faded in or out. The surrounds for the round instruments are in rose gold, which is typical of the brand. An alternative display form to the tubes is the sporty “Pure EV” style. A three-dimensional performance bar conveys the respective driving status (driving, accelerating, charging).

The central display starts with the familiar home screen and the so-called “zero layer”. In this basic setting, the navigation map dominates. The driver can carry out 80 percent of the most common interactions directly without changing the application. The system reacts situationally and is personalised with intelligent suggestions and forward-looking offers.

The rear passengers experience the same extensive range of infotainment and comfort features with two 11.6-inch displays on the backrests of the front seats. With the standard MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment, content can be shared quickly and easily on the various displays. It is also possible to select and modify the navigation destinations from the rear seats. The standard equipment also includes the MBUX rear tablet, which can also be used outside the vehicle, and the MBUX Interior Assist.

Natural materials made with perfect craftsmanship create a stylish contrast to the high-tech look. Natural woods are available as trim parts: MANUFAKTUR brown open-pore birch wood and brown open-pore MANUFAKTUR walnut wood, as well as MANUFAKTUR piano lacquer black flowing lines. The Mercedes‑Maybach EQS SUV comes standard with Exclusive Nappa leather in the warm colours espresso brown/balao brown pearl. Macchiato beige/bronze brown pearl is optionally available. For an even more sophisticated look, Maybach MANUFAKTUR Exclusive Nappa leather is available as an option in crystal white/silver grey pearl. The leather in all interior colours comes from sustainable processing.

The Maybach emblem, which is integrated at various points as a design element, underscores the high-quality appearance that is typical of the brand. It adorns the stainless steel pedal system, the cushions on the headrests, the front seat backrests and, as a projection, the footwell in the rear. In conjunction with the first-class rear, it can also be found on the wood trim between the rear seats. When the boot is open, it can also be seen on the inner lining of the tailgate. The brand lettering differentiates the steering wheel and welcomes all passengers on the stainless steel door sills in illuminated form.

Resource-saving luxury: Mercedes-Maybach introduces vegetable-tanned Nappa leather

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is the first model from Mercedes-Benz AG to be fitted with vegetable-tanned leather. Among others, coffee bean shells are used as tanning agents. The water used for tanning is conducted in a closed circuit and flows back into natural bodies of water after recycling. The fat liquoring agents used in tanning are also exclusively plant-based. The sustainably processed leather is not preserved with salt. This saves around 45 kilograms of salt per vehicle with leather seats. New upcycling products such as compostable flowerpots, insulating foams or decking boards are created from the “by-products” of tanning. The sustainably processed leather is therefore resource-saving. The coffee farmers also benefit as they receive a second income from selling the coffee bean shells.

Mercedes-Benz has defined binding criteria for sustainably processed real leather. An important procurement requirement for suppliers is that the leather supply chain must be free from any form of illegal deforestation. The grazing areas must not contribute to the endangerment or loss of natural forests. In this context, the partners must disclose their entire supply chain from the farm region to the end product. The leather skins may only come from animals that are kept in a species-appropriate manner. Only vegetable or alternatively sustainable tanning agents that are completely chrome-free may be used for tanning. For the refined leather, Mercedes-Benz requires its partners to carry out an eco-balance across all stages of the value-added process (Life Cycle Assessment).

Mercedes-Maybach wants to combine luxury with sustainability. In the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, a number of parts and components are made from resource-saving materials. For example, the interior is covered with Econyl carpet. It is made with a nylon yarn from recycled materials such as carpets and fishing nets. Secondary steel and recycled aluminium are also included. The use of recycled materials is an important measure on the way to decarbonisation. Added to this is the net carbon-neutral production of the Mercedes‑Maybach EQS SUV and its battery at the Mercedes-Benz plants in Alabama, USA. The aim of Mercedes-Benz is to at least halve CO₂ emissions per passenger car in the new vehicle fleet over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared to 2020 levels.

The rear: exclusive lounge with a holistic comfort experience for all the senses

In the rear of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, the combination of exquisite materials, perfect craftsmanship and exclusive details creates a self-contained feel-good atmosphere for all the senses - the so-called cocooning effect. Like the front seats, the standard Executive seats are equipped with ventilation, massage function and neck and shoulder heating. There is also a calf massage and the Chauffeur Package. As soon as the right rear passenger chooses the reclining position, the front passenger seat automatically moves forward to the chauffeur position. The massage programmes are also available as part of ENERGIZING COMFORT.

With the equipment First-Class Rear, the front centre console continues like a floating band to the rear seats. It was redesigned for the all-electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. Wooden trim adorns the rear storage compartment for the first time. It complements the wooden trim on the backs of the front seat backrests and between the rear seats, visually reinforcing the cocooning feel-good atmosphere. Also new is a projector in the centre console that discreetly projects the Maybach emblem onto the floor. As in the Mercedes‑Maybach S-Class, the additional equipment includes two thermal cup holders and a shelf for the standard MBUX rear tablet. Four fast-charging USB-C ports and two HDMI interfaces also ensure that travellers can easily use their own digital devices. On request, the centre console can include two folding tables and a cooling compartment with space for champagne bottles. Matching silver-plated goblets are optional.

Diverse possibilities for individual lighting moods

A designer lamp is integrated into each of the C-pillars. The adaptive rear lighting offers additional reading lights in the grab handles and light strips in the headlining. Both the brightness and the size and position of the light spots can be adjusted. At the same time, a wide range between precise work and relaxed lounge light is possible. The setting of the light colour automatically follows the human daily rhythm but can also be adjusted by hand. Added to this is the Ambient Lighting, which runs through the entire vehicle, right up to the roof liner and behind the rear seats. In addition, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV contains Active Ambient Lighting with 253 individually controllable LEDs and 64 individually selectable colours. These include the Maybach-specific colour schemes of Rose Gold White and Amethyst Glow. The diverse options for individual lighting moods also underline the cocooning effect. The brand-typical “Welcome” presentation welcomes the passengers with a special light play: a carpet of light runs across the vehicle and particularly sets the scene for the rear doors.

Air quality: pollutants stay outside

ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL Plus with HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air) ensures good air quality as standard. The air quality sensor supports the fresh air recirculation switch. The air-conditioned circulating air is filtered several times in circulating air mode. The HEPA filter effectively cleans the incoming outside air of fine dust, very small particles and pollen.

A special activated carbon in both the HEPA filter and the cabin filter also filters sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides as well as odours. Flushing with fresh air takes place at regular intervals. The pre-air conditioning makes it possible to clean the interior air before boarding. The particulate matter values outside and inside the vehicle are also displayed in MBUX. They are listed in detail in their own air quality menu. If the quality of the outside air is low, the system can also make recommendations to close the side windows or sunroof.

Active scenting: exclusive magical fragrance – also to be experienced visually

The active scenting also appeals to the sense of smell and is part of the standard AIR BALANCE Package. A special fragrance was created for the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV. No.12 MOOD ebony is an extraordinary and polarising fragrance transporting one into the world of magic. It does not aim to please but to seduce. Soothing and fantasy-stimulating sandalwood gives a touch of the Orient. The combination with beguiling freesia and spicy clove evokes associations of an exotic spice market. No.12 MOOD ebony is an exclusive composition full of longing, attraction and devotion.

The sound experience: immersive music enjoyment and specific Maybach driving sound

With the standard Burmester® 4D surround sound system, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV offers the ultimate sound experience. It features the Dolby Atmos® immersive audio experience, which gives music more space, clarity and depth. Dolby Atmos® makes it possible to place discrete audio elements or objects in a three-dimensional sound field and adapt them to any playback environment. Passengers can hear their music with a clarity equal to the artist’s original studio composition.

The sound system includes 15 speakers: two front bass speakers in the front footwell, one midrange and one tweeter in each door, two 3D speakers in the headliner, two surround speakers in the luggage compartment cover and a center speaker in the instrument panel. There are also two exciters in each seat. The direct reproduction of structure-borne noise in the seats makes the listening experience four-dimensional. Passengers in the front passenger seat and in the rear can also apply the 4D sound to the audio content of the headphones. The sound can be individually adjusted for each MBUX user profile.
With different sound worlds, the driving sound also becomes an acoustic experience. “Aerial Grace” is the name of the driving sound that was specially created for the all-electric Mercedes-Maybach model and can be heard in the interior. It is interactive and reacts to a dozen different parameters including accelerator pedal position, speed and recuperation. Using intelligent sound design algorithms, the sounds are calculated in real time on the amplifier of the Burmester® 4D surround sound system and played back by the loudspeakers.

The suspension: comfortable, adaptable and with a special MAYBACH driving programme

The highest standards also apply to driving comfort. The AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable damping ADS+ is standard. To increase the ground clearance, the vehicle level can be raised by up to 25 millimetres. Rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to 4.5
degrees is also standard. Alternatively, the rear wheels can be turned up to 10 degrees. This enables a turning circle of 11.0 instead of 11.9 metres, which corresponds to that of many compact models.
In addition to the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes ECO, SPORT, OFFROAD and INDIVIDUAL, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV has the special MAYBACH drive programme. It replaces the classic COMFORT programme and is designed entirely for maximum driving comfort for the rear passengers. It ensures that there are only minimal body movements under the rear seats. An oscillation node is located there, so that the amplitudes are at their lowest. The MAYBACH driving programme is the standard setting.

Mercedes-Maybach customers expect the extraordinary, and we aim to exceed their high expectations. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV unites our ambition to lead in digital and electric with our focus on the luxury segment. The very first all-electric vehicle from Mercedes-Maybach complements the best technologies from Mercedes-Benz with the extra comfort and individual details that are only available from Mercedes-Maybach.” Alexandra Boavida, VP Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz South Africa

Bucket Seat: Mercedes-Benz CLE & E-Class First Drives

This week I attended the local media launch of two new models from Mercedes-Benz SA, the all-new CLE Coupe and the new E-Class Sedan. While both models are worlds apart in terms of design and dynamics, at the heart, they both remain true to the tri-star heritage in terms of quality and elegance.

The CLE Coupe is an all-new model, which replaces the C-Class and E-Class Coupe, now fitting both profiles with the car being based on the E-Class platform but following the sporty silhouette of the C-Class. Driving the range topping CLE300 4MATIC on launch, it embodies everything you would want in a coupe in terms of looks, driving dynamics and technology. On the road, the CLE delivers, performance of the 2.0L, 4 Cylinder petrol turbo engine, along with the 48V EQBoost mild hybrid electric motor delivers quite a punch with 190kW and 400Nm of torque. The 4Matic system proved its worth on the windy roads of the KZN South Coast and along with the coastal air made it the ideal environment for the CLE. The interior of the CLE is a carbon copy of the W206 C-Class with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that has interchangeable views, and the 11.9-inch vertical infotainment screen being the focal points of the design. The materials used on the dash are good but I'm still not a fan of the large pieces of plastic that form part of the design that sweeps over to the front passenger. Seat styling and comfort is superb, definitely ranks high on the coupe scale with both driver and front passenger being fully electric adjustable. The back seats are two bucket style seats and have plenty room for adults as this chassis is based off the E-Class. Overall, it was an enjoyable driving experience in the CLE and a model I can see doing quite well in the market as it has a broad appeal and not targeted at just a certain age group. The range topping CLE63 AMG will have a 4.0L V8 which when announced made most of the internet really happy and I'm sure we will be seeing that on our shores soon.

The CLE is launched in two model variants, the CLE200 and the CLE300 4MATIC, pricing on these are as follows:

CLE200 COUPE - R1,355,350.00

CLE 300 4MATIC - R1,430,650.00

After a sizable lunch, it was time to step into the E-Class. Dubbed as "the Executives Mercedes", the E always gave off this professional look at feel to it. It stood from the other model variants the one that had a bit more sophistication to it that the C or even the S Class for that matter. It stood out and had it's own identity and I think that key characteristic got fizzled out in the W213 model. The first time I saw it on the road, I thought it was a C-Class, while it might have been a great car, it had very little differentiating factors for me and got diluted in the line-up. This new one however, the really went back to the rule book and designed something that personified what the E-Class should be to the T. The design is sublime, from the new aged headlamp design with "eyebrow" style DRL's, to the sweeping body with curves and lines the flow seamlessly from the front to the back that meet the rear tail lights with the Mercedes-Benz logo in LED design formation. The front grille also luminates at night to give it extra presence. The E is available in two models for now, being the E200 and the model which I drove on launch, the E220d. The engine pairing just make sense for a car this size and this statue, both engines benefit from mild-hybrid technology which aids the performance output on the car, on the E220d this equates to 145kW and 440Nm of torque. On the road, the E-Class gives you one of the most comfortable rides in its class, the power feels effortless on the road and when reaching cruising speeds, the car takes over and you hardly feel the drive. The interior features a host of technology advancements including the new hyper screen dash board which features 3 screens, which consist of an instrument cluster, infortainment screen and a third for the front passenger that can have 3rd party apps loaded onto it like Netflix and Youtube. This includes a Bluetooth pairing option for wireless headphones.

In the short time I spent with the new E-Class, I loved everything about it and cannot wait to get one on test. Mercedes-Benz SA did confirm that while there are plans for the introduction of the E53 AMG  to the local market in the fourth quarter of this year, there is no plans to bring down the E63 AMG just yet. Pricing on the launch models are as follows:

E200 - R1,344,750.00

E220d - R1,430,550.00

Bucket Seat: GLC 300d Coupe

Since the increased interest in the SUV segment over the years, the SUV Coupe or SAV, how some brands are terming them has also garnered more prospective buyers. At first, I was not a fan of these so called coupe sport utility vehicles but as time went by and we've seen designers broaden their visions of these cars, I've begun to take a liking to them myself. At the beginning of the year I was invited by Mercedes-Benz South Africa to drive their second generator of the GLC Coupe at its local launch in Cape Town. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it looked in the metal, as sometimes pictures may be deceiving, the focal point of these Coupe SUV's is the profile and the rear, as many of the first gens to hit the market seemed clumsy, the GLC Coupe however had its proportions spot on and that rear exuded sexiness and sophistication from any angle. I spent a few days with the GLC300d Coupe and having already driven the normal SUV version of the very same engine, I knew exactly what I was in store for in terms of the power delivery but with this Coupe design, I wasn't merely driving a soccer moms car, I was driving a sexy SUV Coupe, here's my thoughts on the second gen GLC Coupe.

DESIGN

It's all about the rear for me, back in 2015 Jennifer Lopez caused a stir when she reportedly insured her butt for $30 million, firstly I didn't know you could insure body parts but granted she has a good looking rear end so one can understand why she would have done that. In retrospect, the GLC Coupe's rear is that good looking that on top of my car insurance I would also just insure the rear end of this car because I think it is worthy of that much! I did cause some controversy on my Twitter/ X channel when I had the car on test by saying this is the best looking rear end in its segment. Many agreed but there were also a few who didn't but then again they didn't understand what I meant by "in it's segment" but the English language isn't for everyone and be that as it is, I still when lined up to the likes of the X4, Q5 Sportback or even for interest sake, the Haval H6 GT, the Merc still wins that sexy booty competition for me. There is the rest of the car to talk about too, the sloping roofline angular lines, give the car a sporty and dynamic appearance. From the front, you're greeted to the prominent front grille and LED headlights which we find on the new C-Class, this adds to the sporty and aggressive look to the GLC Coupe. There are great design details like the chrome-tipped exhaust pipes and the aluminum side step. All of this adds to the sleek and stylish nature of the GLC Coupe which combines the ruggedness of an off-road vehicle with the elegance of a coupe. The interior is a mimic of the standard GLC but with great textures and trims to choose from, this one having the pin-stripe dash which some dubbed "mafia suit spec" but gives the cabin some added details. The AMG kit added to the aggression with the large 20-inch AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels. Overall, a very impressive looking package from the Germans, but how does this engine differ to the normal GLC?

PERFORMANCE

The GLC300d Coupe is considered a formidable executive SUV due to its potent performance, the 300d model is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo diesel hybrid engine that produces 215 kW and 550 Nm of torque. It has a 9-speed automatic transmission and can go from 0-100 kph in 6.12 seconds. The fuel consumption is also relatively low, with a claimed 5.5 L/100 km, but with my heavy foot and the multi-lane highways of Durban, I battled to achieve that figure. While it remains and SUV, there was a sporty feel about the ride set up. The bulky rear felt more grounded that the normal GLC SUV, and as a result allowed me to be more aggressive with it on the roads. The 500Nm of torque were always ready on demand, be it at a standing start or when overtaking on the roads, the car delivered power on demand and thanks to that smart hybrid system which adds an additional 17kW on top of the 198kW which the engine produces, there was no lag what-so-ever. What works really well for me is the 9-speed automatic gearbox, it's so on the ball with gear changing, even when braking, the down changes are cool and calculated which aids in the fuel economy. Top speed of the GLC300d is limited to 249km/h, but achieving that speed would be a stretch given its design and nature being an SUV, that being said it reaches 0-100km/h time of 6.12 seconds. The GLC Coupe is by no means nimble in nature, but at the same time it didn't feel bulky either, maneuvering GLC Coupe was pretty easy, the steering feels light, and with the big tyres and turning tight turning circle it works well in both high speeds and low speeds.

COMFORT

The focal point of the interior is the 10.25-inch infotainment screen, it's really difficult not to notice it when seated in any part of the cabin. The high-definition display which projects mobile apps wirelessly is part of the new interior design language from the brand and will see it expanded into other models as well. The cabin is neatly laid out, with the increase in ride height, the cabin height is increased too, that means getting in and out of the car is quite comfortable for anyone. If you are vertically challenged, that is where the aluminium side step comes in handy. There are loads of storage compartments in the GLC coupe, the center storage is deep enough to store bottle of white and it has two USB C ports for charging devices and a wireless charging tray. The cup holders have a neat cover which closes to give off a nice finish to the center. The car is tech-savvy with the latest MBUX infotainment system that is highly intuitive and user-friendly. The Mercedes-Benz AI voice assistant is ever ready to help with any command, or if you just feel like asking it random questions, you can do that too. The cabin has dual-zone climate control with twin vents in the rear for the second row passengers, was disappointed to note there was no USB ports for them to charge their devices. The sloping roof line doesn't impact the headroom at the back though, so one doesn't have to duck when getting in. Having the AMG kit, the car came with the twin-spoke multi-function steering wheel with haptic controls. It's the 3rd time having it in a test car and I'm still very confused as to how to use it properly. It just feels a bit much to me and hopefully in the future they can dumb it down. The panoramic sunroof is a welcomed addition to a car like this, I love the look it gives from the outside and with all that natural light coming into the cabin, it makes it quite an enjoyable space to be in. The sound system didn't wow me, I heard better sound from their counterparts from their entry level speakers.

VERDICT

The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe boasts cutting-edge technology, including a user-friendly infotainment system, mild-hybrid powertrains, and advanced driver assistance systems. The optional Tech Package offers additional features like air suspension and active rear-axle steering. With its sleek design and luxurious interior, the GLC Coupe is a compelling choice for those seeking a technologically advanced and stylish SUV. The interior is also more luxurious and tech-savvy, spacious and luxurious with premium materials, advanced technology, and comfortable for seating for five passengers. The drive is fun and what you would expect from the brand, the 300d engine is the one for me, and that hybrid tech with the diesel motor is a synergy made for the open road. I would buy this car based on the looks lone, especially that rear end but thankfully there are more reasons to make you want to purchase this car too.
