Bucket Tech: Huawei Mate 20 Pro - First Impressions

Following the global launch of the Huawei Mate 20 Series in London last week, last night was South Africa's turn to see what the latest from Huawei's arsenal had to offer. In a glitzy event held at South African motor sport heritage site, Kyalami race track, Huawei Mobile SA launched the Mate 20 Pro to the country. Yes, we will be just getting the Mate 20 Pro, not eh normal or the X, nothing concrete about the Porsche Design one yet so there might be still a chance of that coming through.

Various representatives from Huawei South Africa took to the stage to tell us more about this revolutionary device and as per usual with them, they don't beat around the bush and in their examples state their direct competition and how much better their device is versus the others. The Mate 20 Pro is really worth all the fuss, it boasts many worlds first thanks to its mind blowing Kirin 980 chipset, with the smart phone moving more towards AI capabilities, the Huawei Mate Pro leads the pack in terms of this technology. Huawei invests 10% of it's global revenue in research and development and this goes along way in creating these features which leave people in awe.

The AI capabilities on the Mate 20 Pro range from various uses, from the camera to battery life, optimizing the phones processing capabilities and overall better phone experience for the user. We saw how AI works with the phones camera on the P20 Pro, with the phone being able to detect what it is you're taking a picture of, whether it be food, the sunset, a car and it adjusting the photo-metrics to suit and give you the best picture. With the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei have now gone one up with the the camera not only being able to detect what food is in your plate but also give you the calorie count! And with their ever growing data bases, more food will be added with updates.

Battery life for people on the go is key, the last thing they want is fumbling with USB cables in cars or carrying cumbersome power banks, that is where the Mate 20 Pro comes up trumps again, with a 4200mAh battery, it will last you two full days with normal usage on a single charge. The device also comes with Huawei's 40W SuperCharge which is capable of charging the device from 0% to 70% in just 30 minutes! The Mate 20 Pro is also Huawei's first device to come with wireless charging ,this too is much faster than any others with it being 15W. The real kicker when it comes to Huawei's wireless capabilities is the reverse wireless charge. It can charge any other device that has wireless charging functionality.

Coming back to the camera, Huawei's low light pictures on its previous models were not the greatest, this was fixed with the P20 Pro but made even better with the Mate 20 Pro. It's features a revolutionary matrix design system with the 3 lenses and flash sensor on the back. It has 2 wide angle lenses along with a telephoto lens. Giving you more detail, more picture and brilliant night shots that do not require a tripod to capture it. The video has improved in leap and bounds, with it capturing crisp pictures in 4K, and being able to add real time filters while recording. Seeing is believing so you really need to see it in action.

Huawei also took the opportunity to launch the Watch GT, which slots between the Watch 2 and the rumored up coming Watch 3. It has the worlds fastest heart rate monitor with it checking your pulse every second with other devices doing so every 10 or more seconds. Thus giving you a more accurate heart rate. The watch also has a range of applications that can be loaded on there and Huawei are in talks with medical aid companies to have their watches recognised on their platforms. Expect an announcement by the end of the year.

As I said in my post last week, there are many smart phones on the market, many made to to cater various needs and it was pretty hard to say which one is the best, but with the Mate 20 Pro, it really has blown the competition out of the water and even as cocky as Huawei are, with them boasting that the Mate 20 Pro is the best in the world, it is hard to argue with them on that one. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is available for pre-order now with the few lucky first pre-orders getting the Watch GT as a free gift with it, deliveries will start from November 1st. The price of the device is R18,999 coming in equal and cheaper than other flagship devices on the market. Price of the Watch GT is R4,999.
