Samsung having been leading the way in foldable devices since the introduction of their Flip and Fold range which is already 6 years old already! While competitors have mimicked some of their creations, there isn't a doubt form the market who is the preferred brand to opt for when looking for a folding smart phone. There range which includes the flip which is a handy pocket size device that can fit into your shirt pocket and opens up onto your average size smart phone and the Galaxy Fold which is the size of your average size smart phone but opens up into a mini tablet. Depending on your use, but the Flip and Fold are great devices but they do come with a hefty price tag, with this in mind Samsung decided to launch their Galaxy Flip 7 device in a Fan Edition spec which offers the consumer the versatility of the folding feature but at a more attractive price range. I spent some time with it to see what its all about.
PROCESSING
The Flip7 FE uses Samsung’s Exynos 2400 chipset paired with 8 GB of RAM (FE positioning: “fan edition” / value tier). In normal phone tasks — social apps, scrolling, streaming, light gaming — the phone feels smooth and responsive thanks to the 120 Hz panel and Samsung’s software optimizations. However, the Exynos 2400 is a step down from the newer Exynos 2500 / flagship Snapdragon silicon in the non-FE Flip 7; under sustained heavy loads (long gaming sessions, big multi-tasking) you’ll see higher thermals and occasional frame drops compared with the flagship Flip 7. If raw GPU/NPU power for the most demanding mobile games or intense on-device AI tasks matters to you, the FE is competent but not class-leading.
SCREEN
Samsung carried over the Flip series’ core display hardware: a 6.7″ main AMOLED with 120 Hz refresh and a larger cover screen than older flip-style phones (the FE’s cover screen is smaller than the top Flip 7’s but still very usable for notifications, quick replies and camera previews). Build quality follows Samsung’s usual standard — a refined hinge mechanism and durable materials — but the FE intentionally trims some premium bits (simpler color options and fewer RAM/SoC upgrades) to hit a lower price. Expect the usual foldable tradeoffs: an ever-present crease, a careful approach to dust/water ingress compared to non-foldables, and the same sort of careful handling you’d give any recent foldable. What that means day-to-day: the panel is bright, smooth at 120 Hz, and the cover screen makes selfies + quick tasks genuinely faster than always opening the phone. If you’re new to foldables, this is one of the more approachable options.
CAMERA
Hardware: a 50 MP main sensor, a 12 MP ultrawide, and a 10 MP selfie — the FE reuses much of the Flip 6/series camera recipe rather than radically upgrading sensors. The phone benefits from Samsung’s image processing and some of the newer ProVisual / AI processing tricks Samsung introduced across the 2025 lineup, but the FE’s less powerful NPU means some advanced AI features are less snappy or slightly less capable than on the flagship Flip 7.
Features you’ll actually use: single-take style shots, decent night modes, and strong daylight HDR. The outer cover screen is very useful for high-quality selfie framing with the main camera (saving you from the lower-quality internal selfie when you want the best results).
CAMERA QUALITY
Daylight / good light: Images are sharp, with solid detail from the 50 MP main sensor and pleasant colors that follow Samsung’s slightly punchy but generally pleasing tuning. Ultrawide is usable and well matched for perspective shots. Overall, very capable for social sharing and everyday photography.
Low light / night shots: The camera holds up reasonably well thanks to computational stacking and night modes, but you’ll notice more noise and occasional softness compared to top flagship foldables with the newest imaging engines. The FE’s chipset and thermal envelope limit how aggressively Samsung can push multi-frame processing.
Video: Stable, sharp in good light; slightly less headroom in extreme low light or long recording sessions versus the Flip 7. AF and stabilization are solid for everyday clips.
The camera hardware is very good for the price tier. If absolute best camera in class is your priority, flagship Flip 7 / Fold 7 or other flagships still edge it — but for most users the Flip7 FE’s camera will be more than satisfying.
BATTERY
The Flip7 FE packs a 4,000 mAh battery. In real-world testing and in Samsung’s own claims the phone typically delivers a full day of mixed usage (web, social, streaming, spot gaming), but it won’t match the endurance of larger-battery foldables (some competitors and the regular Flip 7 with its 4,300 mAh cell will last longer under heavy use). Charging is capped at ~25 W wired (15 W wireless, reverse wireless supported) — fine for overnight top-ups and medium-speed top-ups during the day but not “super-fast” compared to some non-foldable flagships.
If you’re a very heavy user (lots of gaming, long camera/video shoots or extended screen-on streaming), plan on topping up during the day. For light–moderate users, the FE will comfortably make it to bedtime.
Stylish Acessory
VERDICT
The Galaxy Z Flip7 FE is a smart, value-focused foldable: it brings the fun and convenience of Samsung’s Flip form factor and very good cameras into a lower price bracket, while accepting a few sensible compromises (mid-tier Exynos 2400, slightly smaller battery, more limited finishes). For most users who want a stylish, pocketable foldable for daily life and social photography, it’s an excellent pick — but power users and photo/video obsessives should compare it against the non-FE Flip 7 (and competing foldables) before deciding
Pricing is at R24,359 from Samsung Store but third party retailers have it priced cheaper.

March 24, 2023 – Tech brand, Lenovo, has today announced a brand-new line up pf LOQ—pronounced “lock” gaming laptops. The Intel-based Lenovo LOQ 16IRH8, and Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 laptops as well as the Lenovo LOQ Tower 17IRB8 desktop PC, the AMD-based Lenovo LOQ 16APH8 and the Lenovo LOQ 15APH8 laptops offer new and aspiring gamers a premium gaming experience that is powered by the latest technology advancements. The two sub-brands are complementary in catering to a wider gaming community, including beginner gamers setting off on their gaming paths to greatness with Lenovo LOQ as well as those leveling up to Lenovo Legion devices to compete against more advanced opponents.
“With the launch of the new Lenovo LOQ brand, we’re building a lineage of gaming excellence and PC offerings that are not just for the gaming community’s top players, but for new and future gamers alike,” said Jun Ouyang, Lenovo’s vice president and general manager of the Consumer Business Segment, Intelligent Devices Group. “Lenovo LOQ breaks down barriers to entry for gamers, empowering them to embark on adventures of connection and fun in the gaming world.”
Lenovo LOQ gaming laptops—Blaze new in-game trails while forging real-world connections
New gamers will enjoy lots of choice with the Lenovo LOQ gaming portfolio, no matter the screen size (15-inch or 16-inch), the processor (up to a 13th Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPU), or graphics (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU). Lenovo LOQ gaming laptops with NVIDIA GPUs feature a MUX switch that enables the integrated GPU to be bypassed via NVIDIA Advanced Optimus during gaming sessions. These powerful internals are kept cool via up to four heat pipes, dual 85mm 12V high-speed fans, and extra-large air intakes and outlets that total up to 135W TDP while keeping the laptop cool and quiet enough for a library or coworking space. A Tower that’s all wheat and no chaff—The Lenovo LOQ Tower 17IRB8
The Lenovo LOQ Tower is the obvious choice for beginner gamers who want a desktop PC that can play great out of the gate, with future-proof expandability and bold aesthetics. The front of the spacious 17L chassis’ blue-accented 2D and 3D striped patterns are a nod to the Lenovo Legion gaming pedigree that not only look sharp, but also provide increased ventilation that allow the up to 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700 CPU and up to the latest NVIDIA RTX 40-Series GPUs to breathe during heavy gaming sessions. Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) last Friday announced the launch of its all-new Super Device line HUAWEI MateBook D15 which offers you a seamless integration brought by the Smart Office setup. The new 12.6-inch HUAWEI MateBook D15 is available on the Huawei website and across select retailers in South Africa, starting 15 June 2022 priced at R11 999.
The all-purpose HUAWEI MateBook D15 is made for everyone and continues the design elements established by the MateBook D Series, that utilises Huawei’s ‘Pure Shape’ minimalistic design philosophy with its thin and light metal body. It also features a 15-inch HUAWEI FullView display with an 87% screen-to-body ratio.
Solid performance supported by a new 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor
To many of us, a laptop is not only a tool to get work done but also an entertainment platform. A new 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor built on the 10nm SuperFin technology powers the HUAWEI MateBook D15. The quad-core, eight-thread processor has faster performance to effortlessly handle everyday usage scenarios and features integrated Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics to provide graphics performance rivalling entry level discrete counterparts. The new HUAWEI MateBook D15 can be configured with up to 16GB dual-channel RAM for faster and smoother multitasking and features a high speed SSD (Solid State Drive) to further improve the overall system performance. Also, an advanced cooling system featuring high-density HUAWEI Shark fin fan and two heat pipes, leverages the bionic design to ensure the laptop performs stably under load.
Metallic beauty with a FullView Display offering exciting visuals while protecting eyesight
A product exemplifying Huawei’s “Pure Shape” design philosophy, the new HUAWEI MateBook D15 has a minimalist design with clean refined lines running through the metal body, creating an understated appearance in either classic Space Grey or an elegant Mystic Silver colourway. Additionally, the HUAWEI MateBook D15 is as light as 1.56kg and measures only 16.9mm at its thickest point. Travelling with it is effortless and the rich array of ports along the sides of the laptop will satisfy most everyday usage scenarios. The HUAWEI MateBook D15 features a 15-inch anti-glare display that retains the series’ signature FullView design, offering an 87 percent screen-to-body ratio with a 16:9 aspect ratio for immersive cinematic experiences. The display also has passed TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light certification and Flicker Free certifications for a protective and comfortable viewing experience. The low blue light level helps reduce eyestrain related to prolonged display use.
Triple your productivity and creativity with the Smart Office Experience
We all want the ability to switch seamlessly between our laptops, tablets smartphones and monitors. This does not only guaranty swift and effortless operation, it also opens gateways to boost productivity and creativity. Huawei’s Smart Office experience enables you to connect all three devices at the same time such as a laptop, tablet and monitor. When a HUAWEI MateView GT is connected with a compatible laptop, for example, with the HUAWEI MateBook D15 via a USB-type C, it becomes a second monitor for the laptop. Furthermore, the same laptop can also be connected with a tablet via Multi-screen Collaboration, with keyboard and mouse connected to the HUAWEI MateView GT. This combination makes it possible for you to use up to three independent screens at once, with content flowing seamlessly between the trio!
Swift Charging
One of the common drawbacks of laptops are the battery life and charging speed, right? Thankfully, Huawei tackles this point with the HUAWEI MateBook D15. The AC adapter supports HUAWEI SuperCharge™ for quick charging with compatible Huawei smartphones. A 15-minute charging session provides enough charge for the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 to run for up to two hours.
Login securely with fingerprint power button
One recurring feature that you are going to love on the HUAWEI MateBook D15 is the inclusion of the fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. This is a nice touch and makes biometric unlocks a breeze and most of all, you do not have to sign in with passwords or scan your fingerprint separately to login. While some people are content with a system good enough for web surfing, others require a laptop than can handle tasks that are more intensive. The HUAWEI MateBook D15 gives you all that and a tad bit more starting with its thin and light minimalist metallic body, eye protection FullView Display, 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor for a smooth and solid performance, Smart Office experience which offers futuristic ways to interconnect with multiple devices for seamless cross-device sharing and more.
The HUAWEI MateBook D15 is available for R11 999 on the Huawei Online Store and will be available for purchase from the 15 June 2022.

Last night saw Samsung introduce their latest range of flagship devices to the country with the launch of the Galaxy S22 range. With Samsung still being one of SA's best selling mobile devices, many were intrigued to see how they would make this new range better than the predecessor, with the S21 proving to be extremely popular with the market, and with the newly introduced S21 FE edition, it was going to take some great new innovations to steer people to opt for the new range, and as always Samsung have delivered.
The design of the new S22 and S22+ hasn't changed a lot from the S21, in fact they're almost identical, with the only key differentiator being the colours which are Phantom White ,Green, Pink Gold and Phantom Black. With a slim line design that has bezels which flow with the symmetrical design, finished off in a sleek metal unibody that houses a expansive display and at the rear, monochromatic camera housing which surrounds the linear camera system, which makes it oh, so attractive.
The triple camera system comprises of a 12MP Ultra Wide Camera, a 50MP Wide-angle Camera and a 10MP Telephoto Camera which has 3x Optical Zoom. Over on the front, a 10MP Selfie Camera can be found in the pin-hole slot on the screen. The new camera eco-system encourages you to be your own pro photographer with the device able to capture high-quality photos with at super fast speed, the high-resolution sensor is Adaptive Pixel which shifts the pixels to suit the lighting, which means more pictures that have great detail and the less change of blurred or unsteady photographs. The night mode on the camera system has been significantly improved with Samsung even dubbing it as "Nightography" which allows you to capture epic pictures with insane quality in low light conditions. This is thanks to a big pixel sensor which enlarges to pull in light while the Super Clear Glass dials down the lens flare, which assists both in photos and videos in dark conditions. This also helps reduce the "noise" that one normally gets when taking pictures in poor lighting conditions. Video recording has received an upgrade as well with the pro-grade camera recording now featuring blurless footage as well as new stabilizer which ensures smooth videos all the time. Samsung have improved the OIS correction angle by 58% which works with faster motion sampling that assists in stabilizing your shots, the colour captures have improved with Super HDR that has 64x more colour information even if the scene is backlit.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 range all come with incredible screens, with the S22 and S22+ having bright and brightest display accordingly. The stunning 120Hz Infinity-O displays are built with Dynamic AMOLED 2X with Vision Booster technology for high outdoor visibility, keeping the view clear in bright daylight or at night which means no glare. The Galaxy S22 is powered by a 4nm processor, the fastest chip ever on a Galaxy which ensures the phones smooth working whether you're vlogging, gaming all night or simply scrolling your feed. The Galaxy S22 comes with 3700mAh battery while the S22+ has a 4500mAh battery, both devices have Fast Charging, with the S22 having 25W and the S22+ having 45W with their respective Power Adapters. Both devices have Wireless PowerShare to charge other devices which are low on juice wirelessly. The devices come with a suitable amount of protection, the screen and back panel are fitted with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ which can better survive drops and offers a tough scratch resistance. They also have Armor Aluminum Frame that protects the devices sides when dropped, it also is rated IP68 ensuring water and dust won't prove to be a problem for it.
Also launched last night was the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which essentially is like the Note but in the Galaxy S22 Series, the design is very "NoteWorthy" as well as the design and size. The S22 Ultra also has a built-in S Pen, the first of its kind for the Galaxy S Series. The pen which has been a revelation since its introduction enables you to write, sketch or control your phone with fits neatly into the bottom side and is ejected from the bottom of the device. The S22 Ultra is available in 3 colours, Burgundy, Phantom White and Phantom Black. Samsung say this device is an epic leap for smartphones it also features the 4nm chip which optimizes just about every feature in the device. The display on the S22 Ultra is the brightest yet, it features a Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with Vision Booster and has almost zero glare, hitting 1750 nits at its peak and having a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate keeping your scrolling smooth and constantly adjusting to what's on your screen. The S22 Ultra has a Quad system camera which has a 12MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera, 108MP Wide-Angle Camera, 10MP 3x Optical Zoom Telephoto Camera and a 10MP 10x Optical Telephone Camera, ensuring great zoom with this device. On the front you have a 40MP Selfie camera, all lenses are equipped with the massive pixel sensors and shape-shifting pixels which assist in low light photography. Samsung say that on the S22 Ultra, they've taken the biggest leap in video technology yet, with auto framerate which detects lighting and shifts to optimal fps speed automatically. The camera also comes with Pro mode to take your photography to the next level enabling you to extract RAW files for fine tuning on your PC. The Ultra comes with a 5000mAh battery and also has 45W Fast Charging capabilities.

Everyone knows Huawei for their brilliant mobile devices and of recent their smart tablets have been getting more exposure but they also make laptops and quite frankly they're just as good if not better than most of their competitors on the market! The MateBook D series comprises of two models, the D15 and D14, both of which are essentially the same with the only difference being screen size. Huawei says the main selling point for the MateBook D Series is its pricing point and while they always cater for the masses by giving us value for money products, this notebook is much of the same, they have not compromised on performance or quality in these products and the price is pretty reasonable and in most cases cheaper than the competition. The D Series laptops feature some of the innovations available on the market today, its equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor and a Radeon Vega 8 graphics card, the system design and capabilities enable these laptops to realise the full potential of their CPUs and GPUs output. The result is machines that work hard and play hard, and will be able to deliver any task you set them.
Huawei have made these the first Windows PC's to use fingerprint technology for log-in, which works really well when you boot up, all you do is scan your finger and it logs straight in, no need to input passwords. The laptops come with 8GB of DDR4 memory, thats enough to handle most high-load apps no the market. While these laptops are high spec'd, their main aim is for work output as well as browsing, they are capable of running games as well but not on the highest graphics setting.
Huawei market these as lifestyle laptops, depending on your circumstances and needs, they integrate seamlessly with other Huawei devices. With Huawei share, all you have to do is touch your mobile device to the laptop and it instantly syncs the devices with a virtual screen of your phone on the laptop. You can access your phones files directly from the laptop screen and can drag & drop documents with ease. No need for cables and security settings.
The Huawei MateBook D15 laptop measures just 16.9mm thick making it the thinnest and lightest laptop in its price bracket, with its 15.6" FullView display offers a borderless viewing experience with 1080p FHD IPS screen. The top and side bezels are only 5.3MM thick which means its a 87% screen-to-body ratio, again the highest yet on a Huawei MateBook D. The D14 laptop on the other hand has a 14" FullView display, with an 84% screen-to-body ratio and is just 15.9mm thick. The MateBook D battery life is particularly impressive as its approximate life is 9.5 hours on video playback while the D15 has a 6 hour battery life.
Overall, its yet another great product offering from the Chinese manufacturer, pricing is on point with the both having a RRP of R13,499 and are available from the Huawei online store or other Tech outlets.
Earlier this year I reviewed the Hisense C30 Rock, which is a mid range smart device which also is pretty rugged with it being IP68 rating and IK04 shock resistant, my verdict on that particular device was that it was a great all round device for the everyday person, with standard features and it gets the job done. A few weeks ago Hisense sent me another device to review, this time the smaller brother to the C30 Rock, the C30 Rock Lite. With recent times, a lot of smart phone manufactures have been releasing Lite versions of their premium phones, with it offering slightly less in specs than the main device. Most of the times, it uses tech from the older generation devices which was replaced but of recent, the market has gotten more competitive so manufacturers had to up their game.
STYLING
Like the C30 Rock, the design is very similar, with round edges which are rubberised, a nice metal finish on the side and a rubber back. It's got a decent weight and feels good in hand. Being under the Rock name, this phone is already Shock resistant, IP67 water resistant and dust resistant. So it's a pretty hardy phone, and if you have to look at the current offerings in the market, not many brands have a device such as this available. The phone comes with a 5.0" IPS Display which we'll chat about a little later. It has that old iPhone look to it and it's quite a decent size, not being too bulky and doesn't feel uncomfortable in your pocket.
DURABILITY
Unlike the C30 Rock which is IP68, the Lite is IP67 rated which is still a good rating for water resistance. I wouldn't necessarily take it swimming but I won't stress over if it does happen to fall into some water. However, I did take this for a swim but unfortunately for me, I didn't save the pictures before formatting the device when I sent it back. Rookie error on the part of us! The device is also shock and dust proof, so if you're the outdoors type of person who loves going running/ hiking, this would be the perfect phone for you.
PROCESSING
With Lite devices, this is where the main talking point comes in, processing power. While the bigger phones need faster processes to perform the tasks on demands, buyers of these devices aren't going to be using the phone for running multiple apps, editing spreadsheets etc. With the Rock Lite, it comes with still a decent chipset, having the Quad-core 1.3GHz processor and has 2GB of RAM which is sufficient for a phone of this nature and size. For memory, it has 16GB of on board memory and a memory card slot up to 128GB Micro SD which also doubles as a dual SIM slot. The phone is primarily 4G but the secondary SIM slot is 3G.
CAMERA
The camera on the light is also slightly downgraded from to the 8MP camera with LED flash. Still capable of taking great quality pictures in proper lighting environments. It records in 1080 @ 30 frames per second and has an auto focus feature. The front facing camera is a 5MP, perfect for all your social media needs and you don't have to worry about your battery running out quickly as the device comes with a 3900mAh battery, which gives you about a day's worth of use.
VERDICT
When looking at this phone, while it might not win any contest against other smartphones, it boils down to pricing. This phone is available at retailers for under R2,500. That is an absolute steal compared to what you can buy from the bigger name opposition. And with Hisense great product support locally, should you have any issues, best believe it will be resolved without a fuss. Serious value for money with this device and for someone who spends most of his time on a construction site, I wouldn't mind one for myself.
