Evolving Eye Protection Technology from Prevention to Relief
Introducing the latest advancements in eye-protection technology, HONOR launched AI Defocus Eye Protection at MWC Shanghai. Noting the global increase in cases of nearsightedness caused by long-term screen usage, this technology leverages AI to simulate defocus glasses on the smart device’s display.
Wearing defocus glasses is proven to be conducive to eye health as they intentionally induce controlled defocus in the user’s peripheral visual field to help maintain clear central vision. This effect creates an altered visual perception that slows down the eye elongation process, which leads to nearsightedness. Taking eye protection from prevention to creating technology that can lead to relief for consumers, HONOR’s AI Defocus Eye Protection has been shown to decrease users’ transient myopia by 13 degrees on average after reading for 25 minutes, with some users experiencing a maximum reduction of 75 degrees.
Mitigating Fraud with AI Deepfake Detection
Circumventing the risks presented by cloud-based “deepfake” AI technology, HONOR has introduced AI Deepfake Detection. To help prevent fraud and detect digitally manipulated content, AI Deepfake Detection examines frame-by-frame information such as eye contact, lighting, image clarity, and video playback to identify flaws that are imperceptible to the human eyes.
Additionally, the AI Deepfake Detection has been trained through a large dataset of videos and images related to online scams, enabling the AI to perform identification, screening, and comparison within three seconds. If synthetic or altered content is detected by the feature, a risk warning is immediately issued to the user, deterring them from continued engagement with the potential scammers for their safety.

A few weeks back I got to spend some time with the latest device from Honor South Africa, their X9a smart phone. It was my first test device from the Chinese mobile manufacturer so I was looking forward to seeing how it goes. Honor was once part of the HUAWEI business consortium, being a more affordable sub brand, after trade restrictions were placed on HUAWEI for all US based tech companies, Honor decided to break away from HUAWEI and continue on their own, so for me it was a great to judge how far they've come as a company without a major parent company to assist them and from my first thoughts on unboxing the device, it seems that they doing pretty well. Quality of the packaging and how the items were presented were pretty much up to standard with most high-end brands.
So, what's in the box? Well first up is the actual phone, followed by a silicon cover, sim tray eject pin, then underneath the quick start guide is a USB Type C charging cable and a charging block! Aha, yes Honor are still giving you a charging block with their devices, which does come handy seeing that it is a Super Charger.
First impressions of the phone, great design with its unibody metal body, curved screen display with 93% screen-to-body ratio. The phone I had came in Emerald Green, one of two colours that it is available in, the other being Midnight Black. The phone has a rather interesting circular camera design with a glass band that houses the 3-lenses and the flash. Even though the HONOR X9aisn't a flagship device, it still gives off a very premium look and feel.
The party trick to the HONOR X9a is its screen, it measures 6.67-inch and is a curved OLED display with 1.07 billion colours and measures 800 nits on full screen-brightness but the real kicker is that its claimed to be the toughest screen on any device. It can survive drops, rolls and being squeezed! This is all thanks to its 0.65mm deeply reinforced glass with enhanced stress of over 900Mpa sq. This gives you assurance that should you drop the phone, chances of you cracking the screen is minimal. There are plenty videos on YouTube demonstrating the durability of the phones screen but I obviously I had to test it out myself but after the first two drops I got a bit scared even though there wasn't a need to be.
Day to day phone usage with the HONOR X9a was pleasant experience, the 120Hz AMOLED curved display is easy on the eye and very responsive. The battery life on the device was very impressive as well with it having a 5100mAh battery that is claimed to last 2 days and I came close to achieving this. In terms of processing power, the X9a comes with a 8GB+5GB HONOR Ram Turbo which kicks in when it feels that the phone is being over stressed with multiple apps and functions being performed at once. I never felt any lagging while using the phone over the 2 weeks and I tend to do a lot with the phone during the day, instant messaging on multiple platforms, phone calls, video calls, sifting through social media and of course taking pictures and videos, which brings me to the next item for discussion, the camera.
While the HONOR X9a does come with the triple matrix system camera, with the main camera having a 64MP lens, I wasn't very pleased with certain aspects with the picture quality, especially in low light but then again I have to remember this isn't a flagship model device so for the price you're paying, the camera is actually brilliant. The clarity of the close-ups did impress me a lot and the 5MP wide angle camera is decent too. The front facing camera is a 16MP F2.45 which is prefect for selfies and takes pretty decent videos too in 1080P resolution.
Overall my experience with the HONOR X9a was a decent one, an entry level phone that has some great features and even better hardware, it certainly stands out from the rest in its segment and a great buy for anyone considering this device.

HONOR Talents: Applications for Interactive AR Artwork Category Now Open
Complementing the initiative, HONOR has introduced a dedicated Interactive AR Artwork category as part of its HONOR Talents global design competition. Within the category, contestants are invited to produce digital AR artworks which creatively transform their neighborhoods, including digital overlays for buildings, walls, parks, and other public spaces, helping to get communities closer to culture. Last night saw the launch of Honor in South Africa, the Chinese sub-brand of global giants Huawei brings with it a more affordable smart phone range which has already had tremendous success in Asia, Russia, Middle East and certain parts of Europe. The launch last night was for one of their flagship devices, the Honor 8X, form their X series, which they dub their "affordable flagship range"...didn't know there was such a thing but here we are. If I had to guess an equivalent range, I'd say its a budget version of the Huawei P Series.
Telling us more about Honor was President of Honor MEA region, Chris Sun. With the success achieved elsewhere, it was a no brainer to launch Honor which offers unrivaled products at unbeatable prices. He also claims that Honor set "tech trends" with their devices improving the way low cost smart phones are made, offering their customers more for less. He has already set a target for his South African team, to achieve a top 3 market share by 2020 nationally. A major feat but it can be done.
Next up Richard Liu, the CEO of Honor South Africa was up to tell us more about the device being launched, the Honor 8X. It's the first device in its category to offer a 91% screen to body ratio with full view display. Total screen size is 6.5", has 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage space. The Honor 8X has the Kirin 710 processor with GPU turbo improving response time for applications and gaming. The Honor 8X has AI cameras for both the front and back, with the main rear camera being 20MP dual lens and the fron, 16MP. The AI camera helps improve the quality of image captured by assessing the the background, light and focus. One of the main draw points is it's low light photography, when compared to the iPhone X, the camera on the Honor 8X shows more detail, light and better quality. The screen on the Honor 8X is also gentle on your eyes with it being the first mobile phone to receive certification from TUV Rheinland, assuring users that the screen emits low light that doesn't put strain on your retina.
Now with all these great features and technology in the Honor 8X, you could be thinking the device is close to the 10 grand mark, but you would be wrong, Honor 8X is priced at R5499! Available from Monday the 26th of November across the country, exclusively to Foschini outlets and available in three colours, blue, black and red. This is just the first phase with plans for sales to be expanded through other mediums and outlets. Next year Honor plan to bring in more devices, starting with their flagship device in January.
