A Leap Forward in Colour Accuracy

The True-to-Colour Camera System of the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro addresses some of mobile photography’s biggest challenges, including accurate colour reproduction across varied lighting conditions, delivering consistent, true-to-life colours in any environment. Its larger pixel size significantly boosts light intake, ensuring precise colours and fine detail even in low-light scenarios. Colour consistency is maintained seamlessly when switching between the main, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses.

The new DCG HDR technology enhances dynamic range by up to 300%. In high-contrast scenes, such as backlit portraits or sunset landscapes, it preserves highlight detail and shadow colour without distortion. It offers up to 20x greater drop resistance than conventional glass, significantly reducing the risk of screen damage. Its impact resistance is enhanced by up to 5x, allowing the device to withstand daily bumps and scrapes while maintaining its pristine appearance. Bucket Tech: Samsung Eco-System

As the world of technology evolves and brings more smart-home options, consumers are no longer just choosing products, they are choosing ecosystems. The real value lies not in individual features, but in how seamlessly everything works together. That is where Samsung stands apart.

Built on four powerful pillars - Bespoke AI1, SmartThings2, Knox Security3, and Reliability - the Samsung mission is to simplify everyday life, protect what matters most and evolve alongside the people who use it. This is technology with purpose.

Bespoke AI: Intelligence That Learns Your Habits

Bespoke AI is about technology that adapts to your life. Instead of generic automation, Samsung’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) remembers your habits, preferences, and routines to make daily life more intuitive, efficient, and personal.

Laundry becomes just as effortless. A Samsung washing machine automatically detects fabric types4 and dirt levels, adjusting water, time and temperature in real time. This is AI with a purpose: reducing decisions, saving time5 and delivering comfort without complexity.

SmartThings2: A Home That Works as One

A truly smart home is not a collection of disconnected devices, but a coordinated system that works quietly in the background. SmartThings2 is the engine that makes this possible. SmartThings2 gives users a single, intuitive hub to control lighting, appliances, TVs, smart locks and cameras6. Setup is simple, and routines can be tailored to real-life habits, whether it’s morning wake-up scenes or bedtime security checks.

In real life, this means meaningful control. With SmartThings, a family learns how much energy and water their washing cycles consume. A pet owner can check live camera feeds at work and adjust a smart feeder remotely to keep their dog happy and on schedule with meals. That is connected living that feels natural and not technical.

Imagine you're at a store, deciding what to cook for dinner, but you can't recall the ingredients already in your fridge. With SmartThings, you can easily View Inside7 for contents in your Bespoke AI Side-by-Side Refrigerator Family Hub to check what you have on hand.

Knox Security3: Protection Built Into Every Layer

Smart living works better when it’s secure. That is why Samsung embeds protection directly into the core of its devices with Samsung Knox.

Unlike add-on security apps, Knox operates at both the hardware and software levels, guarding personal data, biometrics, payments and even smart-home commands. And this protection is designed to safeguard users.

A parent makes quick grocery payments using Samsung Wallet, confident that sensitive financial details remain encrypted and protected. A professional uses Knox Workspace to separate work data from personal apps on the same device, ensuring privacy and compliance without carrying two phones. Even connected home devices benefit, with cameras, sensors and locks protected from unauthorised access, making security a foundation.

Reliability: Technology That Can Last

True value over time comes from trust. Samsung’s focus on long-term reliability means its products are designed not only to perform today, but to deliver consistently for years.

Appliances undergo rigorous durability testing, while smartphones, TVs and home devices receive long-term software update commitments that keep them secure and capable long after purchase. A strong service and support network ensures help is available when it’s needed.

This reliability is evident when, for instance, a family uses their Samsung washing machine for years with minimal maintenance, thanks to durable internal components and self-cleaning systems. And with an industry-leading 20-year warranty8 on the digital inverter compressor in many appliances, peace of mind is built in from day one.

What makes Samsung the ideal choice isn’t just the power of its individual products. It’s how everything connects and strengthens the overall experience. Bespoke AI makes devices smarter. SmartThings makes homes more intuitive. Knox keeps your data safe. Reliability and peace of mind with a leading warranty.

Bucket Tech: Clandestine Group x Excellerate Security

A few weeks ago I was invited to view a security demonstration by the Clandestine Group in partnership with Excellerate Security, now I know you must be wondering, this is a tech segment so why am I talking about security services? Well its simple, with the advancements in drone technology, its becoming a more viable option for security companies to station drones in large estates or plants for site monitoring but drones are a hot topic of discussion, while many use them for recreational activity and creating content, they are actually quite a power tool that can do so much more than take cool videos and pictures for your Instagram. There also lies a problem, quite a number of drone users are not licensed to fly them, as part of the SACAA (South African Civil Aviation Authority), it is mandatory for anyone who fly's a drone, be it for personal or commercial use, they have to be a licensed operator. While drones do have geo fences built into the GPS's, there is still a high risk of danger when piloting one, even at lower altitudes.

Taking all of this into consideration, the Clandestine group has partnered up with the Starlite Aviation Group, who are market leaders in all things aviation and also provide training for light aircraft and drones. This partnership ensures that all legal bases are covered in terms of the relevant operational licenses and and approvals. The security aspect ties in with Excellerate Security Services which already has a major portfolio with some of the largest and most prestigious estates in the KZN region. How this all integrates is masterful to witness as it was demonstrated to a selected crowd at its launch.

Drones come in various forms and sizes, Clandestine Group have carefully selected ones from the DJI range best suited to the application at hand. The most popular one being remote stationed drones in a docking station that can be flown by an offsite drone pilot at any given time. The offerings range from routine patrolling to spontaneous flights when a breach is detected. While the drones will fly in a pre-determined flight path, all while getting clearance from SACAA, the limitations doesn't end at the point where the drone cannot fly, the drones have high-resolution cameras with high quality optical zoom that can zoom into objects 100's of meters away, it can recognize text such as names on vehicles or number plates. It can also perform infra-red scanning for searches at night, that can pick up heat signatures or tracks left by perpetrators.

In the live demo, we witnessed how the integrated services work, a breach was detected along the fence line of the estate, the drone was deployed to the area of the breach, flying at a height high enough to not attract attention but close enough to keep close eye on them. The on foot security K9 unit was notified and made their way to the area all while the drone was following the suspect. The drone pilot kept in contact with the K9 unit until the suspect was apprehended.

While this was an impressive display, this technology has so much more to offer, for large scale uses as well. With you being able to set up multiple drone stations along a route for patrolling. They can even map and survey the land giving you a 3D point cloud model of the area which can be useful for future development. They are even looking at adding cleaning extensions in the future for window cleaning on high rise buildings and providing scans for building conditional assessments. This is the first of its kind operation in the KZN region and with the backing from big names in the industry, this is something well worth considering if you have a large property portfolio.

Bucket Tech: Samsung AI Secured Privacy

The potential of AI is limitless, but to truly unlock the full potential of what it can do, user inputs that power personalized experiences are critical. AI needs to understand you — your preferences and your routines — to deliver a mobile experience that feels like a natural extension of your everyday life.

Intuitive, context-aware Galaxy AI features bring these personalized experiences to life, transforming your smartphone from a tool to a smart companion that anticipates your needs and offers suggestions designed to make your life more productive, creative and connected.

To deliver a fully personalized experience, your device naturally needs access to certain data. This is what allows AI to understand you and tailor its responses in ways that are genuinely helpful and suited to your lifestyle. To ensure your personal data is safeguarded in this era of AI, we’re constantly innovating data protection on your device, so that nothing falls into the wrong hands.

Personalization Made Possible with the Personal Data Engine

Samsung Electronics’ Personal Data Engine (PDE) is a key component of safely delivering these highly personal experiences. First introduced with the Galaxy S25 series, the PDE is the powerhouse behind some of Galaxy’s most life-changing AI experiences yet. It works silently behind the scenes to learn from your habits and preferences, resulting in a truly personalized, unique experience.

Whether it’s Now Brief guiding you through your day with curated updates or simply finding that one perfect photo in your Gallery with natural language input, Galaxy AI makes every AI-powered action feel seamless. And because the PDE safely processes your data on-device, you can enjoy all the benefits of deeply customized AI — without compromising privacy.

Powerful Advancements with Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection

To further strengthen the security of Galaxy AI experiences, Samsung developed Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP) — a powerful new layer of on-device security that protects your most sensitive data without interrupting your experience. First developed for the PDE, KEEP now also safeguards other Galaxy AI features like Smart Suggestions, Now Brief, Samsung Moments and more, running quietly in the background to ensure that each supported app is kept secure.

Think of your phone like a house. Each app has its own room — separate, but all under the same roof. Then there’s Secure Folder, which works like a fully detached guesthouse with its own key, set apart from the main home. It’s great for keeping certain things extra private, especially when you want complete isolation from the rest of your device. But as AI features like the PDE start handling more sensitive tasks in real time, there’s a growing need for security that’s just as strong, yet more connected to your everyday experience.

That’s where KEEP comes in. Imagine turning part of the house into a private suite — still under the same roof, but with its own secure entrance that only you can use. It’s more private than a regular room, but not completely separate like the guesthouse. KEEP works the same way: it creates a secure, dedicated space for individual apps — like the PDE — so it can safely handle your data without sending it anywhere or getting in the way of how you use your phone.

As our mobile experiences become more intelligent, KEEP ensures your most personal data stays safe by design. Bucket Tech: Samsung Galaxy Anti-Theft Features

With an average of 189 cellphones reportedly getting stolen everyday in Mzansi, Samsung is urging South African Galaxy users to activate the latest anti-theft and anti-robbery features now available on Galaxy devices. These updates form part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to smarter, tougher mobile security, giving users more control over their data, even in high-risk situations like smash-and-grabs or pickpocketing in busy taxi ranks, bus stops/stations, and other public areas.

The latest security enhancements come via Samsung’s One UI 7 update, which was introduced with the Galaxy S25 series earlier this year and is now being rolled out to a broader range of devices across the Galaxy ecosystem.

South Africa continues to grapple with high mobile phone theft rates, especially in urban areas like Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. Whether it’s phones being snatched from hands at traffic lights, lifted at taxi ranks, or stolen in the dark or load-shedding-induced house robberies, Galaxy users now have new ways to protect their personal data.

Samsung’s new Theft Protection suite builds on existing Android security and introduces advanced layers of protection, even in cases where criminals might have access to your PIN or try to disable your device.

Galaxy users can now enable a range of new security measures, including Identity Check, designed to offer stronger protection in complex theft scenarios. These features respond automatically and intelligently to suspicious activity, helping ensure that personal data remains secure and under the user’s control in these critical moments.

Existing and updated features in Theft Protection include:

  • Theft Detection Lock: This uses machine learning to detect motions associated with theft such as snatching, and instantly locks the screen to stop unauthorized access.
  • Offline Device Lock: The screen gets automatically locked if the device is disconnected from the network for an extended period, ensuring protection even when the device is offline.
  • Remote Lock: If the device has already been stolen, users can lock it remotely using their phone number and a quick verification step. Remote Lock also allows users to regain control of their account and explore additional recovery options.

New Anti-Robbery features released on One UI 7 include:

  • Identity Check: In unfamiliar locations, the ‘Safe Places’ feature requires biometric authentication for any changes to sensitive security settings, adding an additional layer of protection when a PIN may have been compromised.
  • Security Delay: A key component of Identity Check, it triggers a one-hour waiting period if someone attempts to reset biometric data. This crucial buffer gives users time to lock the stolen phone from a connected device, such as a PC or tablet, before unauthorized access can occur.

These updated theft features are now becoming available on previous flagship devices, starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Z Fold6, Z Flip6, Z Fold5, Z Flip 5, S23 and S22 series,  with future updates planned for even more Galaxy smartphones.

Bucket Tech: HONOR AI Innovations & Security

Global technology brand HONOR revealed two industry-leading on-device AI innovations created to empower individuals and introduce a new level of user safety. During its keynote at MWC Shanghai 2024, titled “The Human-AI Synergy: Intelligent Devices Will Empower People Better,” HONOR showcased its latest advancements in human-centric AI, AI Defocus Eye Protection[1] and AI Deepfake Detection. During the keynote session, the brand also reiterated its focus on human-centric on-device AI and its belief in the potential for AI-enabled hardware to empower users by delivering tailored services while protecting user privacy.

“AI is revolutionizing our lives and driving the smartphone industry forward, but much of the industry has focused on cloud-based AI, which is just a part of the puzzle. On-device AI, which is run on smartphones that understand us better than any other devices, is uniquely positioned to deliver services that are tailored to us and our preferences,” said George Zhao, CEO of HONOR Device Co., Ltd. “At HONOR, we believe on-device AI has the potential to empower users and become more capable in everything they do. We invite all industry players to join us as we explore the untapped potential of on-device AI.”

Evolving Eye Protection Technology from Prevention to Relief

Introducing the latest advancements in eye-protection technology, HONOR launched AI Defocus Eye Protection at MWC Shanghai. Noting the global increase in cases of nearsightedness caused by long-term screen usage, this technology leverages AI to simulate defocus glasses on the smart device’s display.

Wearing defocus glasses is proven to be conducive to eye health as they intentionally induce controlled defocus in the user’s peripheral visual field to help maintain clear central vision. This effect creates an altered visual perception that slows down the eye elongation process, which leads to nearsightedness. Taking eye protection from prevention to creating technology that can lead to relief for consumers, HONOR’s AI Defocus Eye Protection has been shown to decrease users’ transient myopia by 13 degrees on average after reading for 25 minutes, with some users experiencing a maximum reduction of 75 degrees.

Mitigating Fraud with AI Deepfake Detection

Circumventing the risks presented by cloud-based “deepfake” AI technology, HONOR has introduced AI Deepfake Detection. To help prevent fraud and detect digitally manipulated content, AI Deepfake Detection examines frame-by-frame information such as eye contact, lighting, image clarity, and video playback to identify flaws that are imperceptible to the human eyes.

Additionally, the AI Deepfake Detection has been trained through a large dataset of videos and images related to online scams, enabling the AI to perform identification, screening, and comparison within three seconds. If synthetic or altered content is detected by the feature, a risk warning is immediately issued to the user, deterring them from continued engagement with the potential scammers for their safety.

Democratising Samsung’s Most Powerful Security Innovations to Intelligently Protect More Customers for Longer

This year, Samsung is bringing one of its most innovative flagship security features, Samsung Knox Vault, to Galaxy A series users for the very first time, including on the new Galaxy A55 5G and Galaxy A35 5G. A hardware-based and tamper-resistant security solution, Samsung Knox Vault offers comprehensive protection against both hardware and software attacks by constructing a secure execution environment that is physically isolated from the system’s main processor and memory.

It can help protect the most critical data on a device, including lock screen credentials, such as PIN codes, passwords and patterns. Samsung Knox Vault also protects device encryption keys, encrypting users’ private data stored in the device. Only a user who has the correct lock screen credentials can access their data, even if the device is lost or stolen.

The Galaxy A55 5G and Galaxy A35 5G are also secured by Samsung Knox, Galaxy’s multi-layer security platform. Samsung Knox is a reliable security platform that is designed to safeguard critical information and protect against vulnerabilities with end-to-end secure hardware, real-time threat detection and collaborative protection, taking a holistic approach across the entire Galaxy ecosystem.

For even more ways to stay protected, the Galaxy A series offers Auto Blocker, an opt-in package of additional security measures. When switched on, Auto Blocker can block app installations from unauthorised sources, provide app security checks  to scan for potential malware and block potentially malicious commands and software installations to your device while connected by USB cable.

New Galaxy A series users will also have access to Galaxy’s Security and Privacy Dashboard, making it easier than ever to see and control what is happening to their data and withdraw any permissions whenever they choose. They can also enjoy Private Sharing (part of Quick Share), which enables the secure and encrypted sharing of private files containing important personal or financial information. To ensure confidentiality, users can control the recipient’s access permissions and the file’s expiration date, while also choosing to limit screenshots or downloads.

The new Galaxy A series smartphones demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to ensure Galaxy devices remain secure and up-to-date for longer. With the Galaxy A55 5G and Galaxy A35 5G, users will continue to benefit from up to four generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and five years of security updates - optimising the lifecycle of the devices by keeping them equipped with all the latest Galaxy and Android features.

Bucket Tech: HUAWEI MateBook D15

Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) last Friday announced the launch of its all-new Super Device line HUAWEI MateBook D15 which offers you a seamless integration brought by the Smart Office setup. The new 12.6-inch HUAWEI MateBook D15 is available on the Huawei website and across select retailers in South Africa, starting 15 June 2022 priced at R11 999.

The all-purpose HUAWEI MateBook D15 is made for everyone and continues the design elements established by the MateBook D Series, that utilises Huawei’s ‘Pure Shape’ minimalistic design philosophy with its thin and light metal body. It also features a 15-inch HUAWEI FullView display with an 87% screen-to-body ratio.

Solid performance supported by a new 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor

To many of us, a laptop is not only a tool to get work done but also an entertainment platform. A new 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor built on the 10nm SuperFin technology powers the HUAWEI MateBook D15. The quad-core, eight-thread processor has faster performance to effortlessly handle everyday usage scenarios and features integrated Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics to provide graphics performance rivalling entry level discrete counterparts. The new HUAWEI MateBook D15 can be configured with up to 16GB dual-channel RAM for faster and smoother multitasking and features a high speed SSD (Solid State Drive) to further improve the overall system performance. Also, an advanced cooling system featuring high-density HUAWEI Shark fin fan and two heat pipes, leverages the bionic design to ensure the laptop performs stably under load.

Metallic beauty with a FullView Display offering exciting visuals while protecting eyesight

A product exemplifying Huawei’s “Pure Shape” design philosophy, the new HUAWEI MateBook D15 has a minimalist design with clean refined lines running through the metal body, creating an understated appearance in either classic Space Grey or an elegant Mystic Silver colourway. Additionally, the HUAWEI MateBook D15 is as light as 1.56kg and measures only 16.9mm at its thickest point. Travelling with it is effortless and the rich array of ports along the sides of the laptop will satisfy most everyday usage scenarios. The HUAWEI MateBook D15 features a 15-inch anti-glare display that retains the series’ signature FullView design, offering an 87 percent screen-to-body ratio with a 16:9 aspect ratio for immersive cinematic experiences. The display also has passed TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light certification and Flicker Free certifications for a protective and comfortable viewing experience. The low blue light level helps reduce eyestrain related to prolonged display use.

Triple your productivity and creativity with the Smart Office Experience

We all want the ability to switch seamlessly between our laptops, tablets smartphones and monitors. This does not only guaranty swift and effortless operation, it also opens gateways to boost productivity and creativity. Huawei’s Smart Office experience enables you to connect all three devices at the same time such as a laptop, tablet and monitor. When a HUAWEI MateView GT is connected with a compatible laptop, for example, with the HUAWEI MateBook D15 via a USB-type C, it becomes a second monitor for the laptop. Furthermore, the same laptop can also be connected with a tablet via Multi-screen Collaboration, with keyboard and mouse connected to the HUAWEI MateView GT. This combination makes it possible for you to use up to three independent screens at once, with content flowing seamlessly between the trio!

Swift Charging

One of the common drawbacks of laptops are the battery life and charging speed, right? Thankfully, Huawei tackles this point with the HUAWEI MateBook D15. The AC adapter supports HUAWEI SuperCharge™ for quick charging with compatible Huawei smartphones. A 15-minute charging session provides enough charge for the HUAWEI MateBook D 15 to run for up to two hours.

Login securely with fingerprint power button

One recurring feature that you are going to love on the HUAWEI MateBook D15 is the inclusion of the fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. This is a nice touch and makes biometric unlocks a breeze and most of all, you do not have to sign in with passwords or scan your fingerprint separately to login. While some people are content with a system good enough for web surfing, others require a laptop than can handle tasks that are more intensive. The HUAWEI MateBook D15 gives you all that and a tad bit more starting with its thin and light minimalist metallic body, eye protection FullView Display, 11th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor for a smooth and solid performance, Smart Office experience which offers futuristic ways to interconnect with multiple devices for seamless cross-device sharing and more.

The HUAWEI MateBook D15 is available for R11 999 on the Huawei Online Store and will be available for purchase from the 15 June 2022.

Holiday Express - Experience

A few weeks back I was invited along with a group of other media personnel to experience the Holiday Express train. As stated in my initial blog post, there is a certain stigma that is associated with using Public Transport in South Africa, there is a general fear of using it and the number one factor is safety. I guess this is one of the reasons we were invited to experience the Holiday Express, to help alleviate this fear from many by telling you about our journey. There were two options available for the weekend, Saturday's trip was a journey to Shongweni where you would visit the farmers market or on the Sunday was a trip to Scottburgh to enjoy the sea side. I opted for the Shongweni Journey as I always wanted to go to the Farmers Market after hearing rave reviews about it.

I took my mom along with me, as she would love the Farmers Market in Shongweni but also as a child she used to travel by train quite a lot going from Durban back home to her family in the Northern Cape. We both were equally excited for the journey that lay ahead. Upon arrival at Durban Station, we were greeted by our friendly host, the Business Class lounge at the Station serves as a waiting area till you depart on the train. There were beverages and snacks available for purchase as well as tokens that you could use on board the train. Just before 8am we made our way down to the platform to board the KZN Business Express coaches. The coaches are very different from the normal ones, with large cushion seats which can recline, have arm rests and have fold up tray tables in front of you. It was my first trip in Durban on a train so I was looking forward to viewing the city from the rail way tracks.

The route is slightly different from the main line as it meanders it's way through the city, going through the Jacobs area before turning up towards Queensburgh and Shallcross. Making its way through Marian Hill before reaching Shongweni. During the ride, I took time to explore the other coaches, and I was surprised to find one coach having a bar with light refreshments and snacks, and further back another coach with a full size board room table and kitchen where hot refreshments were served. Along the route there were many tunnels which the train went through, which we all loved going from daylight to darkness and daylight again. The train also makes a stop just before Shongweni to view a waterfall which is only accessible via rail. Even though the total time of the journey took one and half hours, one doesn't really feel it that long with so much to see along the way.

Once we reached Shongweni Station, it was time to disembark and board the buses that were waiting for us. A short 5 minute drive and we were at our destination, the Shongweni Farmers Market. The market was a buzz of activity, with stalls selling everything and anything, from plants, to fresh produce, crafts and not forgetting, plenty of food! Most of us had built up and appetite by now but were spoilt for choice at the selection on offer. Everything is fresh, tasty and smelt delicious, it's a pity our stomachs could handle only a certain amount of food as I'm sure I speak for all when I say we would have loved to try everything on sale! With the market closing at 12 o clock, we had to be back on the bus by 11.30am, which was ample time for us to enjoy the markets sights and scenes. Once back at the station it was time to make our way back home.

The journey back, even though using the same route proved to be equally exciting, as you were heading in the opposite direction and gave you saw things that you didn't see on the way there. Once safely back at the station, I asked some of the other travelers what they had though about the experience. Many said that they had booked it mainly for their kids but didn't anticipate themselves having so much of fun as well. It really is a wonderful way to explore and experience this magnificent province and no matter which destination or trip you chose, it's bound to be an out of the ordinary experience for the entire family. The next trips are planned for the 30th of September to the Shogweni Farmers Market and the 1st of the October to Socttburgh.
