Bucket Scene: Vintage, Vogue & Velocity 2026

Yesterday we attended the media launch of Vintage, Vogue & Velocity, an event that is redefining what a traditional classic car show can be. Rather than simply showcasing beautifully preserved automobiles, the event seamlessly blends classic motoring with fashion, beauty, music and lifestyle, creating an experience that appeals to enthusiasts and families alike.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Camp Orchards in Hillcrest, the venue provides the perfect setting for this unique celebration. With its sprawling gardens, open spaces and relaxed atmosphere, Camp Orchards complements the elegant aesthetic of the event, making it as much about the experience as it is about the attractions on display.

Taking place on 30 August 2026, Vintage, Vogue & Velocity promises a fun-filled day with something for everyone. Motoring enthusiasts can admire an impressive collection of classic and vintage vehicles, each with its own story and timeless appeal. Fashion lovers will be treated to stunning displays of exquisite garments as models showcase a range of elegant and contemporary designs throughout the day, while live music adds to the vibrant atmosphere.

Adding a touch of sophistication to the occasion, the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will captivate attendees with a selection of beautiful melodies, creating a truly unique ambience that perfectly complements the elegance of the classic cars and fashion displays. It's not every day that visitors can experience the harmonious blend of orchestral music, timeless motoring and high fashion in such a picturesque setting.

The event has also been designed with families in mind. Visitors can enjoy the on-site café, or opt for a leisurely afternoon by purchasing one of the available picnic baskets and relaxing on the beautiful grounds while taking in the sights and sounds around them.

Whether you're passionate about classic cars, have an appreciation for fashion and beauty, or are simply looking for a memorable day out with family and friends, Vintage, Vogue & Velocity promises to deliver a unique lifestyle experience that brings together style, heritage and entertainment in one unforgettable event.

More details on tickets will be made available soon, stay tuned to their social media channels for more and a chance to win a picnic basket for the day!

Ultra SA 2026 - Artist Line Up

Big news for all ultranauts dropped yesterday with Ultra SA giving us the full artist line-up for this years event taking place on the 25th of April in Johannesburg and the 26th of April in Cape Town. Unlike previous years where we had a phased artist announcement, this year they decided to just drop the entire line-up which in my opinion is better rather than playing the waiting game to see if your fav's are coming.

The international mainstage headliners did not disappoint with sets from Afrojack playing back-to-back with R3hab, Axwell, DJ Snake whom all have played in the country before but making his debut and being the main headline act is John Summit. We're a big fan of what John has been doing and we can guarantee you he will be bringing that energy to the SA crowds come April.

Resistance stage is back with Dennis Ferrer and SA's very on Shimza who's been creating "fire" on dance floors across the world headling that. Loads of support artists for the event is made up with some of the best local acts, such as Dean Fuel, Aidin Caye, Liquideep, Timo ODV, DJ Kent, Baby Whitz and many more. Tickets are still availabe at www.ultrasouthafrica.com

Gary Rom - Umhlanga

Gary Rom hairdressers need no introduction to the South African market as they are one of the more popular franchises around with a big footprint in Guateng, they are expanding their reach to KZN with the first salon opening in Umhlanga from December 2020. This particular store is aimed and the male market, something which has been lacking for us Durbanites. While ladies are spoilt for choice when it comes to their pamper sessions, men had only their general barbers to go get a haircut and odd shave. Gary Rom Man offers so much more than just a haircut as I got to find out last week. They ensure that they leave no stone unturned to offer you the ultimate grooming experience.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the store manager who was very welcoming and accommodating, making sure all Covid protocols were handled by means of temperature check and form filled, it was time to get my hair did but first, a visit to the lounge area where a host of lifestyle magazines were available to read as well as being offered a drink while I wait, apart from the usual coffee options, there was also a well stocked bar, which has some great single malts and other spirits should you wish to indulge before your session.

Not longer after I had my drink in hand, I was summoned to the chair by my barber for the day, Chadwin who was going to be in charge of making me look good, not an easy task but he seemed to be confident of the task at hand. Guiding me to the sanitized chair where I was then cloaked up and ready for my trim. What strikes you first about Gary Rom Man is the set-up, well for me personally I've never seen such a wide variety of machines and scissors which were on display, after telling Chadwin what I had in mind and how I preferred my hair cut, he got to it but with intricacy and patience that I've never experienced before. To my surprise he spent quite a long time ensuring my fade was meticulously done with precise blending before moved onto chopping my hair to make sure the final product looked good. What I loved about my haircut was that it wasn't rushed, while every cut is appointment based, there wasn't that sense of urgency that you may have at other establishments which gave me the sense of every client being important to them.

Once done with the hair, it was time for the shave, I opted for the steam shave which in itself was quite fascinating as they have a steamer over your face ensuring your skin stays moist and warm before your face is lathered up and you get the smoothest shave this end of the east coast. Feeling nice and fresh after the shave I was also offered a facial, now it was highly recommended and not having had one before I was intrigued to say the least. It was a rather refreshing as part of the process is to exfoliate and remove dead or dry skin as well as deep clean the skin to have you glowing. After this is complete, your face gets covered by a refreshing hot towel for a few minutes and you're all done to hit the town.

All in all, my experience at Gary Rom Man Umhlanga was nothing short of exceptional. It was a great to see that there are various treatments offered to men as well as being taken cared of so well by the management and staff. What was great to note that they spare no expense on how they treat clientele, from the time you arrive, to the refreshments on offer and the products they use, all high quality and worth every cent of your time spent there. It was also such a relaxed environment, far from the rush and cut that I've become to accustomed to most of my life. It's definitely changed my perspective on men's grooming and now I cannot wait for my next session.

You can visit Gary Rom Man at Umhlanga Center, 189 Ridge Road, Umhlanga Rocks.

Wilderer Distillery Celebrates 25th Anniversary Gift Set

To celebrate 25 years of excellence, Wilderer Distillery has announced a commemorative 25th anniversary gift box containing the very last of late master distiller Helmut Wilderer’s self-made, award-winning Grappa Muscato, which is housed in beautiful mouth-blown bottles from the world-renowned Red Hot Glass glassblowing studio.

Enjoy this legendary liquid - from South Africa's first and most-awarded craft distillery and one of the most prestigious producers of Grappa, Gin and Eau de Vie worldwide - in bottles sealed by a bespoke stopper accompanied by stunning handmade glass. Every bottle is tucked away in an exquisitely crafted wooden casket with a black gloss piano finish and is affixed with a commemorative silver medallion. This is a true symbol of status and class.

Each set is comprised of hand selected components skilfully put together with careful consideration from start to finish. Each is named after an important milestone or life lesson adopted on the road to 25 years of excellence, and every bottle is personally signed by the master glass-blower to celebrate this release.

Looking back on the elements adding to Wilderer's success, these prestigious boxes each have a story to tell and they capture the essence of 12 intriguing life chapters. Besides having a unique gift, recipients of these boxes will also gain insight into Wilderer's fascinating character as well. 'Karlsruhe', for example, is a nod to Wilderer's hometown - where he enjoyed a long and successful career as a restauranteur - while 'Golf' is a tribute to his favourite sport and the root of how he became South Africa's first private distiller.

Having accrued over 100 international medals and awards, including many Gold and Double Gold medals, Wilderer Distillery has become synonymous with quality, artistry and integrity. Always in Helmut Wilderer's true spirit, they craft the true Spirit of the Cape.

Order your 25th Anniversary Collector’s box for R25 000,00 incl. VAT from thalia@wilderer.co.za +27 72 365 9864 and collect it from the Wilderer Distillery from either Pappa Grappa R45 Simondium, or from the Spice Route farm at La Grapperia Agter Paarl road. These limited Collector’s sets are too fragile to courier.

The story behind each of the 12 intriguing life chapters in each prestigious box:

KARLSRUHE - 640ml

The story starts when Helmut Wilderer was born in Karlsruhe, 1941. In celebration of 25 years of excellence, this box is named after his Hometown. Helmut enjoyed a long and successful career in Karlsruhe as a restauranteur having established some well-known restaurants, some of which still exist today.

LOBSANN - 680ml

Helmut’s father was a respected architect and town planner. In February 1941, he was hired to work on the rebuilding of a small village named “Sultz vorm Wald” in northern Alsace. In order to have his family close to him, he rented a part of a small castle in the neighbouring village of Lobsann. The move was a big relief to the family, as they could escape terrifying nights of bombings in Karlsruhe. Helmut’s mother, Emma (or Emmele, as the family lovingly called her) was a very outgoing woman and quickly made many new friends. One such family, were the Hoeffler’s, who owned a distillery, which still exists today.

In these times a few long lunches were enjoyed together and during one specific lunch, Helmut went missing. Light worry turned quickly into frantic searching for the two- year- old. Helmut was eventually found, to everyone’s big relief, under the lunch table, hiding by a long table cloth, lay Helmut passed out. He had snuck a bottle of Schnaps off the table and over- indulged. This was undoubtedly the key moment, which destined Helmut to become a future world-class distiller.

EMMA - 700ml

Helmut Wilderer’s mother, Emma was born in 1903. She endured two world wars, the second with two small children: Peter, born in 1939 and Helmut in 1941. This bottle is selected to honour Emma for her courage and strength in raising two remarkable children in terribly tough times. Helmut became an exceptionally successful restauranteur and later South Africa’s pioneer of the private distilling industry. Peter is one of the world’s most respected Professors of Water Technology of our time. In 2003 he was awarded the Stockholm Water Prize, also known as the Nobel Prize for Water

GEHEIMRAT - 670ml

In 1977, Helmut opened his first restaurant – Geheimrat. Situated in his home town of Karlsruhe in Southern Germany, the establishment was an instant hit. The brewery that owned the building decided to sell and so Helmut went on to open Café Salmen, one of the city’s most famous restaurants, which 40 years later, is still open today.

GOLF - 770ml

A tribute to Helmut’s favourite sport and the root of how he became South Africa’s first private distiller. It was a golf tournament he won, with the prize being a trip to South Africa. During this fateful Holiday, Helmut fell in love with the country and decided to relocate that same year in 1994, pioneering South Africa’s first private distillery.

STELLENBOSCH - 870 ml

Helmut Wilderer and his son, Christian, settled in this famous town in South Africa’s Cape Winelands region in 1994. Helmut fell in love with Stellenbosch during a week’s holiday and decided to change his career from being a restauranteur to becoming South Africa’s first private distiller.

VERTROUE - 500ml

This was the original name of the small farm in Paarl-Simondium, which Helmut Wilderer purchased in 1999. Today, Vertroue is the home of Wilderer Distillery and its very popular restaurant - Pappa Grappa. Helmut adopted the title of “Pappa Grappa” as his son, Christian, lovingly called him, honouring Helmut for being the father of craft distilling grappa.

PIONEER - 1000ml

This unique anniversary box commemorates Helmut Wilderer’s legacy. Wilderer was established in January 1995 as South Africa’s first private grappa distillery. Today Wilderer enjoys the distinction of the most awarded craft distillery in South Africa, with over 100 medals and awards many of which being gold and double gold. In industry, Helmut is regarded as a true pioneer, a ‘liquid legend’, for his noteworthy contribution towards the growth in the South African spirits industry.

ALEXANDER - 1100ml

This unique anniversary box is named after Helmut Wilderer’s grandson and third generation Wilderer in South Africa. Born in 2012, Alexander Wilderer is at the time of release of this box in 2020, already a keen participant in operations and the distillery team’s favourite helper. Alexander treasures the fine memories he has of his “Opa Grappa”.

THE APPRENTICE - 620ml

In his later years, Helmut Wilderer brought under his wing, an apprentice, Johan Mönnig. He bestowed unto him, his knowledge, skill and passion, to produce world-class spirits. Humbled and keen, Johan (now a Director and Head Distiller) produces spirits of exceptional quality, making his former mentor proud and continuing Wilderer’s excellence.

PATIENCE - 520ml

The Wilderer team refuses to compromise when it comes to the integrity of the product. This is why every step in the process of creating their award-winning products, is carefully monitored and completed with meticulous attention to detail. They carefully process, ferment and distil using German equipment of the highest technological standard. Under the keen eye and nose of the Distiller, they select only a few litres after a long production day to be branded “Wilderer”. Always in Helmut’s true spirit, they craft the true Spirit of the Cape.

HONESTY - 800ml

This unique anniversary box is dedicated to the Wilderer promise of Honesty. In their 25 years of excellence, Wilderer has stayed true to its roots while growing their business in a sustainable way. “Clean, pure and true” was one of Helmut Wilderer’s mantras and today, their spirits are still made using the finest ingredients in the most delicately controlled environment, without any artificial additives. 100% Honest. 100% Wilderer.

Bucket Scene: Wish on Florida

Last night saw the grand opening of Durban's latest hot spot, Wish on Florida. Situated in the middle of Durban's most popular roads,  Wish on Florida offers an upmarket Italian experience, specializing in gourmet pizza, pasta's and canape's as well as boasting a bar which stocks the finest local and international champagnes and wines as well as great selections of cocktails and a wide range of premium spirits. Having attended the launch last night, I was blown away with the attention to detail that went into the deco, as I was quite familiar with the space before and how the owners along with their team of interior decorators manged to transform it into what it is now is just stunning. The use of different textures and lighting really enhance the atmosphere and gives the diner an opportunity to chose from various styles of lounging.

Wish is the beginning of a dream, a dream which was the brainchild of two young black entrepreneurs, both Durban locals who wanted a place that not only offered a unique dinning experience but also one that inspired young black entrepreneurs, to show them that dreams do become reality with hard work and perseverance. Those two men being Benny Maverick and Wayne Ndlovu, Benny who needs no introduction as he one of the countries prominent house DJ's, who never had things his own way at the beginning as his story of success was shared with all those in attendance last night. His passion for what he believed in as well as his fight to be recognized made him into the person he is today. Together with his partners they have created something truly special and something to give back to the community. People who visit Wish get the opportunity to purchase Wish tokens to toss into the wishing pond, each token purchased is a contribution to the Wish Foundation to help aiding young Durban entrepreneurs in their business ventures.

Onto the evening, after being warmly welcomed and seated, with our welcome drinks were were offered canapes which consisted of cajun chicken wings and chicken and mushroom pizza. Both were delicious and flavourful with the pizza not shy of toppings. For mains I opted for the Ocean Fresh Pasta which honestly was my highlight of the evening. Beautifully cooked seafood which consisted of plump prawns, tender calamari and steamed mussels cooked in a creamy tomato base sauce, mixed in with al dente tagliatelle and topped with crispy squid heads. The aromas from the pasta get you salivating instantly to dig in, the textures from the crispy fried squid heads adds that crunch element that you didn't realise was missing in a seafood pasta. For dessert I opted for the classic tiramisu, it was a bit different from your conventional one, with the sponge biscuits being changed for a sponge cake but still maintained that soft decadence that you would associate with a tiramisu.

Wish on Florida, officially opens for trading on the 13th of December 2019, trading from Monday to Wednesday, 12pm till late and from Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 2am.

Wish is located at 198-200 Florida Road, Durban

"Even though I am now 40, in many ways, I feel like I'm still crawling and I'm looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background, where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian" says Riaad.

As an award-winning comedian, actor, write and presenter, Riaad Moosa is one of South Africa's most popular and acclaimed funny men and he happens to be a qualified medical doctor too! It involves the normal issues of getting older while at the same time experiencing, at a maturity where I'm supposed to be wise, a world that is completely turned on its head. And it's about how I negotiate all these things happening around me while trying to maintain a positive attitude. Through my comedic lens, I hope to put a different spin on that and hopefully my next 40 years will be lived with renewed vigour and excitement",  Moosa adds.

Corona SunSets Festival - Durban Support Acts

As most of you already know, Corona SunSets Festival is hitting the East Coast of South Africa for the first time at the end of September this year, with international head line act Robin Schulz being at the helm, he is to be joined by some phenomenal local support acts who will set the SunSet scene and get the hype going until Robin hits the stage. Today we're going to bring you some background on some of the artist that will be performing at the Shongweni Polo Club on the 29th of September.

First up on that lineup is Lady Zamar, bringing some femininity to the stage and representing SA house music with her high-energy stage performance, no doubt including her current number 1 'Collide'.  Next up we have everyone's favourite, the Big Dawg of house music in SA, DJ Fresh! His rhythmic beats is loved world over and he definitely needs no introduction. Another local act that needs no introduction locally is Good Luck, Jules and the boys have been making some fresh new music and cannot wait to share it with the crowds in KZN.

Probably one of the hottest names in the SA circuit at the moment, Timo ODV, he is a multi-talented superstar, and his music if proof of it. Local crooner Matthew Mole will join him and the rest of the lineup with his very SunSet mix of sexy and chill, bringing the crowd closer to the magical SunSet mandala moment.

Black Motion may have made it big internationally but are proudly homegrown and their African-inspired house music will stand out amongst even the talented cast and their set is surely one not to be missed. Then we have SAMA-Award winning DJ Kent who will be bringing his blend of vocal-infused house music to the stage. Joining him is Congalese superstar, Tresor who brings the cool to the stage with his tropical sounding set, perfect for any SunSet Moment.

Bucket Scene: Pop-Up Society

A few weeks ago we were invited to the new visual menu launch of Pop-Up Society in Glenwood. For those who are unfamiliar with the restaurant, you clearly don't have social media, as their milkshakes were the most instagrammed milkshake in South Africa! Having been open for just under 2 years now, head chef and co-owner Rev Batohi decided it was time to change things up and hence the new menu. I don't really venture out to Glenwood much and once I got to Helen Joseph Road, I wondered why? The place was buzzing! It took me quite a while to find parking. Most of the eateries were quite full with patrons, the area had a great vibe and a nice mixture of eateries and bars for everyone.

Pop-Up Society has this "cool kid on the block" vibe going for it though, with it's funky colours and contemporary style, it does stand out from the rest. It has a lovely large outside deck as well as place inside the renovated house for seating, in total it can sit 120 patrons. It also has a full serviced bar if you just want to pop in for a drink.

The theme for the evening was a visual menu and the setup for the media was just that, a visual feast with menu's put up to see just exactly what we were munching on, Chef Rev made the meals in bite sized servings so we could taste a bit of everything, and get a sense of what he had in mind with this new menu. So many times we go to restaurants, read the menu but don't really have an idea what we getting on the plate, with Pop-Up Society you won't have that problem. They try to keep most ingredients as fresh and organic as possible, and that transcends into the flavours you get from their food.

Some of my favourites from the night were the chicken wings and the asian style riblets, full of flavour and have me licking my fingers. As you can tell I am a big fan of finger foods to this menu was right up my alley. The burger menu looked great and while I'm not a beef eater, I was very glad to see a lamb burger on there. I tried the lamb kofta which was given as a taster, and it was also great, tender, spiced well and can only imagine how good it would be in a bun. Guess I have to come back to see for myself.

While the new menu is great, fan favourites from the old menu still remained, like the death by chocolate milkshake, another must have from Pop-Up Society I'm told by many. It probably was the reason their Freakshakes were made so famous, Chef Rev makes his own chocolate ganache which he adds to the "craze shake". Apart from just meals for one, Pop-Up Society also offer platters to share, which needs a pre-order but the variety offered is great. Overall, this place really stands out with its food, giving it a gourmet take on fast food. We will be back to try more from the menu, especially that milkshake!
