Top Gear Festival 2011

Add caption
Im a week late in posting this but as they say "better late than never" right? I flew up to Joburg to see the 3 morons that get paid to do what every boy or grown man dream of doing, no not staring at hot girls the next best thing, man handling supercars around a race track or road. Its hard to believe what they actually do constitutes as a "job" for them, they dream up the most insane idea's for the show such as road trips across various continents with the most outlandish supercars or at times they race other modes of transport like trains, planes and boats. The 3 were down to present to us petrol head South Africans the greatest show they've ever done which is Top Gear Festival 2011. The show was held at the world famous Kyalami race track outside Joburg and they used the entire facility! So you know there was a shit load of walking to do!
Thunder Dome
After walking half the race track in sweltering heat, almost dying of heat stroke we eventually made it to the entrance of the 'Thunder Dome'. An area inside the track which was piratically an outdoor arena but of course Thunder Dome made it sound a lot cooler. It was here where we got to see the BBC's finest export since Mr Bean. The show itself I must say disappointed me a bit with it being too short, obviously I didnt expect them to re-create the ridiculous stuff they did on their TV show there but maybe an extra 20 minutes would have been nice. They spoke about their upcoming series 16 which already aired on British TV's and which we'll only see in 10 years time, they also show cased the cars they used. Jeremy opting for the Merc SLS AMG, Richard the 911 GT3 RS and Captain Slow the Ferrari 458 Italia. Each of them drove into the arena with their respective cars and in true Top Gear fashion promptly did hand brake turns to park them.

Jeremy, Richard & James
Seeing them was abit surreal but funny enough I wasnt star struck, I suppose its the way they make the show as if you were them, one of the guys so when you actually see them its like a long lost friend ... one that you cant just go up and speak to. The show was presented by none other than SA's F1 guru, Sasha Martinengo who at the end was one of the main highlights of the show with him bungee jumping in a car from a tower crane. Brave is not the word to use for him since he completed the act 10 times over the weekend.

Sasha Martinengo in car bungee
We were allowed a back stage tour once the show was complete and it was fun to see how things went down in the back ground and to learn of what they actually go through setting up an event like this and of course getting up, close and personal to the toys was quite nice as well.

Ferrari 458 Italia
The ticket being priced at R365 was a bit steep but I wasnt sure what to expect, it entitled me to an entire day experience at the track, from see the Ferrari owners club race their prized possessions around the track to Sabine Schmitz racing David Coulthard in the RB6! Even all the Shecktors were present to give us a blast from the past in the old F1 cars.

RB6 F1 Car
It truly was worth every cent if you're a petrol head like myself. The pit garages were stocked up with guys either presenting their product to the main importers of Ferrari & Maserati. Even the Franshoek Motor Museum had most of their cars on display, including the likes of the Enzo, F40 & original Bugatti Formula One car which was the first ever to win a race in Monaco.

Ferrari Enzo
The were stalls a plenty for you to buy Top Gear branded merchandise but the quality was terrible as I found out after purchasing a T-Shirt for R250, but I suppose its part of the fun? What wasnt very fun at all was the massive cloud burst that forced many undercover for a good few hours. The rain was relentless as I had to take cover in one of the tents show casing some motor manufacturers. Worked out well for me as I made good friends with the guys from Lexus Midrand who let me sit inside and play around with the Lexus ISF.

SL65 AMG Black Series
After waiting 3 hours for the rain to subside, which it didnt, one just had to brave it and luckily I did as I bumped into a good mate from twitter Dirk Vale. He was there with his mom, the famous Wesbank V8 race driver Clare Vale along with their transporter and goodies, being the Porsche 914 and a car built and designed by Bailey Cars for the LMP2 race at next years Le Mans.

Perana Z One
The bottom end of the pits was where the "Stigs garage" was, here you could find many beauties from the likes of RGM Motorsports M3 conversion to South Africa's very own supercar, the Perana Z! The Perana Z one as its known is the brain child of Jimmy Price of Hi-Tech Automotive in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The design of the car which is rather eye catching was done by the world famous Zagato designs in Milan but the car is manufactured 100% in High Tech's factory in South Africa.

Red Bull Racing Pit Garage
To end off, like I said earlier, the show was worth it if you love you cars and racing. If you just went to see the 3 of them, there is no doubt you left disappointed. If there is another one next year, I wouldnt mind making the trip again.

FHM Fridays - 7

The List

Week 7 will it be 7th Heaven? Of course it would! Yet another 3 local beauties to mesmerise you this Friday. All of which have world wide exposure and experience so you bet they're gonna blow your mind.

Favourite: Genevieve Morton

Born in Benoni, grew up in Natal and now taking the international scene by storm, Genevieve has certainly come a long way and mighty quickly mind you! This year she marked her second appearance in a row for Sports Illustrated International Swimsuit edition and missing out on making the cover to Irina Shyak (I personally feel Gen deserved it). The unveiling of the cover girl took place on David Lettermans show which Genevieve appeared on and looked quite stunning. She also co-hosted this years official Superbowl party with the Black Eyed Pea's, not a major event for us South Africans but quite a huge one if you're American. Besides wowing the USA with her good looks shes being strutting herself in local publications for a while now, the blonde bombshell has appeared in FHM and also the local Sports Illustrated Swimwear Calender. The beauty now resides in Cape Town but if you follow her on twitter you'll know shes so hot she makes geysers pop and she is quite the jet setter with the US being her key destination. Another one I feel worthy of the title and unlucky not to win it before so get your votes in for her.

Underdog: Rouxmia Bougas

Where to start with her? Born in the best month of the year April, there is nothing sheepish about this Arien. With appearances in FHM and having done countless shoots local and abroad she really has her modeling CV filled with awesome references. Last year she was hotting things up in Turkey where she shot for over a month and in the process making the Turkish woman very jealous of what South Africa had to offer. Forever loving a good party and self confessed pole dancer on her blog (she just uses it for stability of course), she prefers guys that approach girls the old school way, not that shes not a fan of technology as shes actively on her twitter account letting her fans know of her latest escapades. She also added her hotness to Crash Car Burns - Twisted music video. Coming in at number 22 last year I think we all can agree we'd love to see her make the list again and at a higher position.

Legend: Tracy McGregor

The middle of the trio off McGregor sisters and she isn't no monkey. Now as you know Im a huge admirer of her bigger sister Kerry but take nothing away from Tracy as shes done it all! FHM covergirl, Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition model, won the title of sexiest in the world and made the cover girl of the relaunched Playboy Magazine South Africa! Not to mention the countless other stuff shes done like getting me to drink Liquifruit just because of her featuring in the TV adverts. I actually didn't get her permission to do this piece but I hope she doesn't mind as I could not leave her out of this feature since she is well and truly a legend!

FHM Fridays - 6

The List

Favourite: Candice Boucher

I and probably many others first noticed Miss Boucher when she leapt onto the scene in SA Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, from then on we were blessed to see her in many other publications including GQ, FHM and in April 2010 we saw her shed everything and pose for Playboy International. The shoot received rave reviews worldwide and just goes to show how far along this local lass has come. If shes not giving it horns in Cape Town you’ll find her strutting her stuff in the Big Apple where she is based most of the time doing SA proud in the city that never sleeps.  Being the face of Guess jeans and mesmerising herself and others in the Sissyboy TV adverts is just some of the places she can be seen otherwise you can catch her on twitter from time to time working on her #bodyofsteel. A worthy contender for the title so lets hope we see her win it sometime soon.

Underdog: Yolandi Malherbe

Also known as Juicy Jemma and quite an apt name because she is one juicy girl of note! The famous online celeb has been rocking the interwebs for a while now with her blog being a weekly must read for many. Having appeared in 3 music videos and also done countless shoots, this sexy lady is no new comer to the world of modelling at all.  Recently just submitted an entry to Playboy SA, created a profile on FHM modelbook and also vying for the title of SA Sports Illustrated New Model search, she recently just won Rapport Newspapers (catch her on the back page this Sunday) model of the week, which the readers can vote for this Sunday! This beauty has one big bright future ahead of her. Ever the life of the party and loving to create a stir is just some of her attributes, its just a pity I didn’t get to meet her as yet since we’re were forever missing each other during my visit to the mother city.

Legend: Minki Van Der Westhuizen

The former winner surely needs no introduction, voted 23rd in Maxim’s hottest woman in the world and made the SA Sports illustrated swimsuit edition more than times! A poster of hers was also spotted on a US troopers room wall in Afghanistan during the war there! If shes getting exposure like this then you know shes hot property! Been in the public eye has been mixed with her relationship with Protea Captain falling out and of recent her divorce, but she is committed as always and proved it last year when she made the cover of Shape Magazine. She may not get number 1 back but we’d sure love to see our Minki stay on the list.

SLK vs DBS

Now if you're the average guy with basic car knowledge, you'll read the title and think "surely the SLK has no chance in hell against a DBS". Unless its a super Hamann conversion with a V12 squeezed into it with some turbo's but this isn't the SLK you think it is. Let me refresh your memory back to FHM Fridays 1.

Yes gents Lady Kaye is back on the Bucket to provide your eyes with another visual feast of beauty, elegance and overall drool worthy material. Like in the previous post, Samantha teams up again with Kass Dea of Kass Photography to bring us yet more mind blowing pictures. When these two combine their talents and work together, they create magic!

There is no other words to describe what they do as the outcome leaves you spell bound. This time round the sexy baking Queen of the Cape swop's her apron for a seductive silver one piece and some gems that try their best to outshine her. Accompanied by one of the best designed supercars around, the Aston Martin DBS, this shoot just oozes elegance, tie in the seductive poses from Samantha and you're in for a visual spectacular of note.

The 6 litre ,V12 coupe made its debut in Casino Royale. An installation of the famous James Bond series of movies. Daniel Craig ended up flipping it in the film and to follow "Quantum of Solace" we saw him tragically man handle it in an epic car chase around Lake Garda in Italy. A total of 6 Aston Martin DBS's were used in filming, unofficially 5 were written off...

Speaking of Bond, now that I think of it Lady Kaye would make an awesome Bond Girl! Shes got all the qualities needed, well in my opinion she does. Maybe I should contact Barbara Broccoli and have her considered for the next film.

If given the choice between the car and Samantha I'm sure most guys would ponder a while before giving you an answer, I personally don't blame them as I would normally too but in this case the only roaring V12 I'll hear is the one being taken away from me as I went with the latter choice, sorry Aston, there is only one SLK.

Don't forget to vote for her in FHM's 100 sexiest, we want to see her make the list and you've just seen 6 extremely good reasons why!

FHM Fridays - 5

The List

Yup its that time of the week again! FHM Fridays part 5, what better way to kick off  your weekend than by going through 3 of some of SA's finest female specimens all to help you decifer your vote for them in the FHM 100 sexiest rankings.

Favourite: Nadia Van Der Merwe

Nadia first caught the eye of many a man when she burst onto the scene as a top 10 finalist in FHM's home grown honeys 2008, dubbed the 'Facebook Queen' she used online social media as a marketing tool to her advantage and with it achieved success in various marketing ploys. Forever in great shape Nadia was also the model for the bikini brand Blue Glue SA and made it into the finals of last years Sports Illustrated New Model search. Always making time for her fans, this is what made her a favourite amongst many, including me. Hence today Im still a massive fan of this sexy beauty that hails from the North, with her down to earth nature, modesty and good looks she deserves every vote she gets.

Underdog: Celeste Stanley

This petite heart stopper might seem familiar to you as she was a finalist in the FHM Model search 2010. She may be small in size but her hotness has her punching above her height. Hails from Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, this is the only Evertonian fan I'll call my friend, well its a good thing she supports the Sharks so it kinda evens things out with us. You can catch her sexyness on twitter from time to time and do your bit by voting for her so we can see her make the charts this year round.

Legend: Karolina Sky

Karolina, with a sexy name like that she should already be worthy of a place on the 100 list! She is the second Polish South African to make the list and she doesnt fail to impress! Some of you may recall her as Karolina Skrzypczak, the former face or should I say legs of Veet, quite worthy legs if I must say so myself. You can still catch her gracing your TV screens for another hair removal product advert but this time for global giants Bic Razors where she stars along side Sharks and Springboks front rower the Beast. Running a busy schedule as the director of a modeling agency and being a full time model herself, it amazes me how she finds time to do so much, let alone answer my annoying questions posed to her on twitter.

Dont forget that all important link to vote: http://fhm.co.za/fhm-100-sexiest
