Tsogo Sun: Cafe Vigour

Yesterday I was invited to the official launch of Tsogo Sun's new bistro styled coffee shop Cafe Vigour. It falls part of the Vigour and Verve brand that is run by Tsogo Sun but on a smaller scale and is aimed more for their casino resorts. The one at Suncoast is the first in the country and opened its doors in April this year, so far its proven to be a hit with the locals with over 12,000 guests served since.

The decor of the shop is very unique and chic, it offers the patrons a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere with their large lounge type arm chairs and warm lighting. The shop is located close to the entrance of the complex so if you want to pop in for a quick cup or a bite to eat, one doesn't have to venture through the building to get there.

Upon arrival I was greeting by Suncoast's PR Manager, Nicole East who told me more about the place and the idea behind the concept. We were treated to a tasting plate prepared by Executive Chef, Justin Oliver which had some of the various items on the menu for us to sample. The plate consisted of:

  • mini french toast stack with grilled banana and bacon with syrup
  • mini tandoori lamb pizza
  • salmon fishcake on a sweet thai stir fry
  • smoked salmon and avo wrap
  • and to end off a Durban classic, mini butter bean and lamb bunny chow.
All the components to each item was brilliant with the different flavours taking your taste buds on an adventure of sweet, to savoury and spicy. The food on offer in the menu has a good variety and strays away from your typical boring coffee shop food with that touch of chic that the brand is trying to build. So apart from getting your breakfast options, sandwiches, cakes and muffins, there is a lovely selection of burgers, pizzas and wraps.

We ended off the way we started, on a sweet note with crispy, fresh, waffles covered in warm syrup and ice cream with some sweets. It was a fitting way to end a great morning spent with the team at Tsogo Sun Suncoast. The next Cafe Vigour planned is at Silverstar Casino in Gauteng.

#TBD2014

I don't know about you but I for one hate the cold! I rather it be blistering hot and I have the AC on to cool me down rather than having the heater on and sitting inside with a warm blanky and a cup of hot coffee. Then again being born and raised on the east coast of South Africa you can say I'm born loving the warmth, sadly as the years go by, the winters are getting colder and while we can afford things like blankets, hot water bottles and even roof over our heads to keep the elements at bay, many South Africans cannot. This is why we do the Twitter Blanket Drive, thousands of tweeters over the past few years have shown incredible support to the initiative and we're expecting an even bigger response this year.

There are many drop off locations around Durban but the main event will be taking place at the Protea Hotel in Umhlanga Ridge. The event kicks off at 6pm so be sure to come around, say hi and make your donation. It doesn't have to be blankets, anything that will help the underprivileged keep warm during our harsh winter months.

If you cannot make it to any of the drop off locations or the main event, the awesome guys down at Uber have come to the rescue. Simply spread the word amongst family and friends and to help out the guys at Uber, have a central pick up point.

  • On the 29th of May, between 10am and 3pm, open the Uber app on your phone
  • Slide to the blanket option at the bottom of the app
  • Select pick up location and then "Request pick up"
One of the snazzy Uber drivers will soon arrive to pick up your donation and deliver it free of charge on your behalf. Don't forget to snap some pics and tweet @TDBAfrica using the hashtag #TBD2014 and include  #UberrrLove if you're getting one of their drivers to pick up your collection.

Their song revolution is proving to be quite popular on beatport but another DJ, Audien most popular from Amarda Beats records has put a new twist to the song, perfect to get the week going.

Bucket Tech: Nokia 1520

Evolution, it's inevitable in life as it happens all around us, we as humans evolve and the things we use on a daily basis evolve. Cars, houses, appliances and of course, the cellular telephone, in fact over the past few years it has been the one piece of technology that has evolved the most. When the first cellphones came out, they were big bulky and were called "bricks" because they practically were. They were big, heavy and did pretty much nothing but make phone calls but as the years went by, the more the manufacturers improved the devices, making them smaller, adding more applications and eventually introducing other technologies to it like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, not too long later we had phones with camera's but then the smart phone came along and things started change.

Phones, although becoming smarter, they also started to increase in size again, hold on? Doesn't newer mean better and smaller? Well yes but in the smart phone's case, no. You see, the people who genuinely use these devices need it to do more than just make phone calls, they use it for instant messaging, social media, emails, view documents, edit documents, schedule meetings, basically the need their computer on their phone. For all this to be possible they going to need a nice big high resolution screen to work on, hence the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note and Sony Xperia T. Both quality devices but blody huge to carry around but it would be unfair to put them in the term "brick" as they may be bigger in size but do a hell of a lot more than the first phones plus they're way thinner, so they much rather be called small TV's or a term I created, since its an inbetweener of a phone and a tablet, I call them "Phablets".

All that rambling was for a purpose, it brings me down to the reason for the blog post. Just little over a month ago Nokia sent me there newest product that just hit the market, the Lumia 1520. Not knowing what to expect from the phone before it arrived and not doing any research on it, I expected it to be more like the Lumia 925 . I got a surprise to open the box and find a 6" monster lurking inside! To say it's huge is an understatement because at the time, the only other competitor on the market was the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which comes with a 5.5" screen. It may sound like a fraction of the size but when put next to each other the difference is quite clear.

From using a "normal size" cellphone with a standard issue 4.2" screen, it was quite an adjustment to move on to something so big and cumbersome but from the first day, you tend to get used to it. Maybe it was the human way of evolving to the phone? Yes in most cases one cannot use the phone with one hand, simply because it is impossible but you appreciate the size when you see exactly what it can do compared to your older phone. Carrying it around wasn't a big schelp either, it fitted in most of my pants pockets and apart from the odd bulge, I couldn't tell the difference to that or my regular phone.

The Lumia 1520 comes with Windows 8 black operating system which in my opinion is one of the better OS's on smart phones today. Besides being easy to use and fast, it integrates and syncs so well with your desktop PC which makes moving from your work station to your phone feel like you're still at your desk. The phone gives you 7 gigs storage space to sky drive so retrieving documents is as easy as pie, the phones internal memory is 16 gigs and it comes with a MicroSD slot capable of housing a 64gig card, so you know storage space isn't going to be a problem. The phone is equipped with a 20 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics auto-focus lens, because of the screen size the lens is wide angled so you can take some brilliant horizontal snaps at 4992 x 3744 pixels, as demonstrated in the pic below of Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. It also records videos in full High Definiation with quality sound recording. The front face camera is a 1.2 megapixel camera which quality is more than sufficient for that selfie.

Some of the key specifications of the phone is the Quad core 3.3 GHz Krait 400 processor with the chipset more than capible of making this device function to its optimal level. Speed on the OS is no problem, speed with regards to its telecommunications level is super fast as well with the phone being 4G/ LTE ready and its Wi-Fi speeds more than adequate to send or receive data in a flash. The stand out thing for me was the battery life, claimed stand by time is 768 hours but from using it, the phone gave me a solid 3 days use, that's with all the connections active, that is network, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The big talking point for the phone as with many devices is the applications available for it, Windows App store gets populated on a daily basis so there are tons of apps available for the phone, being a social media geek, I went for all the popular ones as soon as I got the device, so Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Foursquare and LinkedIn were in the queue for download, granted some of the apps are still in beta testing form, they still work well. It also comes with Nokia story teller, which uses GPS co-ordinates to track your pictures when snapped, almost like leaving breadcrumbs to the places you've been so you can scroll over to Here Maps and search your steps by pictures taken at the various places you have visited.

The build quality of the phone is pretty remarkable, the screen being so big comes with trusty Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protection so its safe from scratches and falls... I know, I dropped the test unit a few times and its pretty strong. Just don't drop it on your foot, it hurts. Another cool thing about the phone is the wireless charging, it comes with a unit which plugs into your wall socket but to charge the phone, one simply has to place it on the charger for it to charge. This may seem unnecessary but you try to charge your phone then receive a phone call or try to reply to a message with it still being plugged it!

Overall I think this is yet another quality product from Nokia, although aimed at the businessman it still is pretty useful to everyday people like you and me, if you prefer the bigger screen its a massive plus and streaming videos on it is almost as good as watching it on TV. The phone does what it says it can do and so much more, over time and with new apps coming out for it, the phone can only get better.

Monday Choon: Moguai - Aciiid

Remember that famous electro track from the movie Blade, it was by the Pump Panel entitled "Confusion". That still remains one of my favourite songs and I could never tire of it. Moguai of Germany has been on the DJ scene for a while now, his first hit "U know Y" made it to the top of the charts in 2002 and from then on he kept it steady in the industry but was more famed for his remixes and edits, well until now. You must be wondering why I brought up that song from the Blade movie, well Moguai's latest offering "Aciiid" sounds very similar to that song and is currently one of my famous songs at the moment. It has a high tempo and fast beat, ideal to kick start your Monday, enjoy!

Close but no trophy

The Barclays English Premier concluded this past Sunday with Manchester City claiming their second title in 3 years. It was a 2 horse race till the last day but it was obvious with City having the advantage that they would do the business. For my team Liverpool, at the onset there was always doubt by others on whether achieving a top four finish was possible but they proved everyone wrong, surpassing their target and challenging for the title till the very last day.

Although disappointed, after the games were over I was damn proud of what they achieved in the season, they didn't get the trophy but they got the respect they deserved and made it known that Liverpool were back and they mean business. Brendan Rodgers and his troops brought back the old Liverpool, the one that sent shivers down opponents when playing against us, we were ruthless against teams, the fast style passing caught many off guard and most of the games were sealed within the first 25 minutes. The passing, the flow and the dedication of the players needs to be commended but what let us down was our defence.

Even though we scored 101 goals, just 1 behind champions City, we conceded 50 goals which is not champion quality. Hopefully over the summer break, the manager and his scouts will find the necessary players needed to strengthen the squad in that particular area. It's difficult to pin point players because they all had good and bad performances, Martin Skrtel for example, he was always in the spot light for tugging on players shirts during set pieces, also he had a habit of tracking back instead of going for the attacker, he also scored 4 goals in the wrong net but on the other hand he made countless goal saving tackles and blocks not to mention the 7 goals he scored in the right net which was a record for a defender.

Other positives to come out of this season was the transformation of the younger players, Sterling, Henderson, Allen and Flanagan all who relatively young proved the doubters wrong. By the end of the season all of them were good as any of the first team choices, the maturity they showed in their game play, passing, thinking and vision only means that they have a bright future ahead for them. Henderson and Sterling have been rewarded with call ups to the England World Cup squad with Flanagan on standby.

I'll touch on it again, it hurts us the fans for coming so close to that elusive 19th title but imagine how the players feel. We saw the raw emotion come out the night after the Crystal Palace draw, as much as we are gutted they were even more so. Many mocked them but at the end of the day, it's them who are snapping up all the prizes now. Luis Suarez has been named Player of the season by many organisations as well as getting the golden boot for most goals scored in the league, the other night, Brendan Rodgers was name Manager of the season by the League Managers Association, so all was not lost.

But to quote the great Bill Shankly, "If you're first, you're first. If you're second, you're nothing" which is a very strong sentence but I believe we were not entirely nothing, with some tweaking this summer and the players keeping the belief we could be a force to be reckon with come the start of the 2014/15 league. We'll come back stronger, hungrier and with bigger challenges in store in terms of Europe, with our long standing captain, he'll rally the players as he always does for the challenge, WE GO AGAIN!
