The Reno12 Pro features the latest generation of OPPO’s proprietary AI LinkBoost technology, designed to provide smooth, seamless, and steady connectivity. With nine individual antennas arranged in a 360° surround architecture, AI LinkBoost boosts signal reception and optimises network selection using a system-level AI model that adapts to network environment.

OPPO has conducted extensive local testing and optimisation worldwide to ensure stable connectivity. This includes reducing network latency in areas with weak signals or busy networks, enabling seamless transitions between WiFi and cellular networks, and accelerating signal recovery speeds when exiting elevators or basements.

For challenging situations like flying, commuting in tunnels or busy highways, or hiking Lion’s Head where mobile network coverage is unavailable, the Reno12 Pro introduces BeaconLink. 

This proprietary protocol boosts Bluetooth transmission, allowing one-to-one voice calls over distances of up to 200 meters without network coverage. While not currently available, this feature will be released in a future update.

New models of the Reno12 series will be introduced in the coming months, with the Reno12FS arriving in July and the Reno12 F 4G hitting stores in August, offering a broader range of choices for customers

Bucket Tech: realme Business Update for SA

Last week I was invited to the Durban leg of the realme Buisness update for South Africa, at the event I got a chance to meet the South African team and learn about the hard work they've been putting into the brand over the last 9 months. Just some background on the brand as it is pretty new to the country, realme was founded in 2018 by Li Bingzhong, who was the former vice president of Oppo, the brand originally started as a sub-brand of Oppo eventually ventured as its own brand but the devices are still manufactured at the shared plant in China. Marketed as a phone for the youth, realme brand commitment is to offer mobile phones with powerful performance, stylish designs and sincere services to its users and judging by their products and pricing, they're keeping up to their promises. 

Country manager Jace Chen led the introductions, given us insight into the brand and how far they've come since being a sub brand of a larger manufacturer. The brand is one of the fasting emerging mobile brands worldwide with it being in over 200 markets, with over 200 million users and in its short stint in South Africa they have also seen this trend follow. The brand also works closely with SA's three largest mobile operators to ensure the best deals are being offered on their devices, with some bundle options for select products too.

Gareth Clarke, realme Account lead for South Africa dropped some insightful figures during his presentation, to date, realme have sold over 20,000 devices in the 9 months they have been available in the country. realme product segment range expands over 4 offerings with for now, just the C series which has been available the longest being on the market and now the introduction of the Note and the Number series which I got a hands on experience with at the event.

At OPPO ODC 2023, the company released its first self-trained generative AI model, AndesGPT, featuring dialogue enhancement, personalization, and cloud-device collaboration. Thanks to the great effort, users can experience a fully optimized hardware-based ray tracing feature on the flagship Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform when it releases. OPPO and Qualcomm Technologies deliver breakthroughs in mobile graphics processing and AI through underlying technology optimizations

As the first smartphone manufacturer to provide an open-sourced ray tracing solution for mobile, OPPO has collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies to conduct software optimizations based on the new generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. These optimizations enable OPPO’s ray tracing technology to be applied to complex, large-scale game scenes on mobile devices.

Visitors to the Snapdragon Summit 2022 were able to experience this ray tracing technology on live game demos, making OPPO the only smartphone manufacturer at the Snapdragon Summit to demonstrate such technology on handsets powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform. 

Running on a device powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, with multiple ray tracing effects turned on, top mobile games can run at a steady 60 FPS while providing life like soft shadows and reflections for the highest gaming visual quality. Compared with previous software only generation, ray tracing render efficiency increased by a factor of 5 and reduced the CPU workload by 90%1. These advances will enable the mobile game industry to step away from its reliance on using software simulation to achieve ray tracing effects, and instead bring advanced, ultra-realistic lighting to complex, large-scale game scenes on mobile devices.

OPPO was the first smartphone manufacturer to develop ray tracing technology on mobile devices through software. Since 2020, OPPO has been building an open ecosystem around the technology that brings together creators, game developers, and game engine developing platforms with the PhysRay SDK — the first open-sourced ray tracing solution on mobile devices released by OPPO. To better cater to the various needs of developers, OPPO has continued to optimize the PhysRay engine for enhanced compatibility between different hardware and software configurations. The Open, Convenient, Adaptive and Balance ray tracing solution acts as a much-needed bridge between hardware and software when implementing ray tracing on mobile devices.

Last night saw the official launch of the OPPO Reno8 Series which will hit our shores in South Africa from October, it's the latest flagship device from the brand that is taking the world by storm. Two models were launched at the glitzy event that took place in the Inanda Club in Joburg, the Reno8 and Reno8 Pro. Apart from the introduction to the phone, the brand took the opportunity to update us on the strides they've been making into the SA market with them having reached over 500,000 users locally, apart from that, the investments they making into the tech and fashion space should not be overlooked as well as their brand partnership with one of SA's biggest football teams, Orlando Pirates. The Portrait Expert

The Reno7 5G’s Portrait Mode gives users total control over background bokeh lights and depth of field settings to allow high-quality photos with styles similar to those captured with expensive, large aperture DSLR camera lenses.

OPPO’s AI algorithms mimic the optical properties of professional cameras to create bokeh light spots of different size, colours, and brightness according to distance and depth of field. Portrait Mode on Reno7 5G offers 25 levels of adjustable aperture sizes, from F0.95 to F16, allowing precise adjustment of the level of bokeh in the background. Bokeh flare settings are available in both Portrait Photo and Video modes.

Portrait Modes also include additional image enhancement options to deliver professional quality, color and clarity. These include detection and preservation of skin textures and skin tones, as well as an entire palette of retouching effects for perfect portrait images. OPPO’s facial recognition algorithms can identify up to 193 key facial feature points in video and apply individual retouching effects to give subjects a clean natural look. OPPO and Hasselblad will now work together to further develop advanced imaging solutions through R&D collaboration, which aims to provide users with more natural colors and a more refined imaging experience. Leveraging Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad, OPPO also targets to bring the most natural skin tone possible to its portrait photography.

Starting with the software improvements for natural color tuning, the three-year partnership will further enhance the color calibration solution and target to establish the new benchmark for smartphone camera color performance, delivering a consistent natural color performance for OPPO mobile phones to cover all scenarios and across the entire camera system.

The result of this collaboration, “OPPO | Hasselblad Camera for Mobile”, will be first introduced in the next generation of OPPO’s flagship Find X series in the first quarter of 2022.

While with FlexDrop, users can have apps within apps open and running by minimizing the app window for seamless duality. The A16s includes a capacity of 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM (MicroSD up to 256GB) and is compatible with ColourOS 11 and Android 11, allowing for state-of-the-art processing.  The Google Mobile Services access to the Play Store, Chrome, Google Maps and YouTube give it that competitive edge.
