Bucket Seat: Suzuki Jimny 5-Door GL Manual

The Suzuki Jimny has long been a fan favourite in South Africa with it having its own fan club and multiple groups that plan Jimny events around the country. The number of accessories and modifications one can do to their Jimny has even expanded. Apart from the appealing price point, the Suzuki Jimny is one of those cars that is genuinely fun to drive because it has so much personality compared to most SUV's on the market today. I got to spend time with the updated GL 5-door model recently and during my time with it did some long distance driving to see how it compared to the launch 5-door model.

DESIGN

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door GL Manual is one of those rare vehicles that immediately stands out on South African roads without trying too hard. While most modern SUVs have moved toward rounded shapes and overly futuristic styling, the Jimny stays true to its roots with its boxy proportions, upright stance and old-school off-road design. The extended wheelbase of the 5-door model adds practicality without ruining the charm of the original 3-door version. In fact, the longer body actually makes it look more balanced and purposeful. The flat bonnet, circular headlights, chunky wheel arches and vertical grille give it genuine character, almost like a miniature G-Wagon designed for real-world adventures rather than social media appearances. The GL trim keeps things simple and rugged, which honestly suits the Jimny’s personality perfectly. It looks functional, durable and unapologetically mechanical in a market full of soft-looking crossovers.

PERFORMANCE

Under the bonnet sits Suzuki’s familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 75 kW and 130 Nm, paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. On paper, those numbers don’t sound impressive, especially considering the added size and weight of the 5-door model, but the Jimny has never been about outright speed. Around town, the lightweight construction and short gearing make it feel lively enough, while the manual gearbox adds a level of engagement that many modern SUVs have lost. On the highway, however, the Jimny starts to show its limitations. Overtaking requires planning and the engine can feel strained at higher speeds, particularly when fully loaded. But where the Jimny completely redeems itself is off-road. Thanks to its ladder-frame chassis, low-range gearbox and Suzuki’s ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel-drive system, this little SUV is capable of tackling terrain that would leave many larger and more expensive SUVs struggling. It’s not fast, but it feels honest and incredibly capable when taken off the beaten path.

COMFORT

Comfort is probably the biggest compromise you make when buying a Jimny. The cabin is practical rather than luxurious, with hard plastics throughout and a design focused more on durability than premium feel. That being said, the 5-door version significantly improves everyday usability compared to the smaller 3-door model. Rear passengers finally have proper space and getting into the back seats is no longer a gymnastic exercise. The upright seating position and large windows create excellent visibility, which makes the Jimny feel easy to drive in urban environments. Ride quality, however, remains fairly firm and bouncy due to the solid axle suspension setup. On rough roads and gravel, it feels completely at home, but on highways you’ll notice wind noise and body movement more than you would in a traditional crossover. Long-distance comfort isn’t its strongest point, but for weekend trips, city driving and outdoor adventures, the Jimny still manages to feel charming rather than uncomfortable.

TECHNOLOGY

The Jimny 5-Door GL Manual keeps technology relatively simple, but it covers all the essentials modern buyers expect. The infotainment system includes a touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, along with Bluetooth, USB functionality and steering-mounted controls. You also get rear parking sensors and a reverse camera, which help compensate for the upright design when parking in tighter spaces. While the system itself isn’t as flashy or advanced as some of the newer Chinese rivals entering the South African market, it remains easy to use and functional. Safety features include ABS, electronic stability control, hill-hold assistance and dual airbags, which are acceptable for this segment, although some competitors now offer more advanced driver assistance technologies. The Jimny’s technology approach feels very similar to the rest of the vehicle simple, practical and focused on functionality rather than trying to overwhelm drivers with unnecessary features.

VERDICT

The Jimny offers something those vehicles simply cannot replicate personality. It feels authentic in a world where most SUVs have become overly polished and emotionally disconnected. The combination of timeless design, genuine off-road capability and everyday usability makes the 5-door Jimny one of the most unique vehicles currently available in the South African market. It’s a car you buy because you love what it represents, not because it wins every comparison test. And for buyers who value character, adventure and individuality over outright refinement, the Jimny remains incredibly easy to fall in love with.

Bucket Tech: MacBook Neo Launches at iStore

iStore, South Africa’s only Apple Premium Partner, has officially introduced the MacBook Neo, a brand-new addition to the Mac lineup designed to bring the performance of Apple silicon to a wider audience than ever before. Starting from R11 999, the MacBook Neo combines a colourful aluminium design with a crisp 13-inch Liquid Retina display, positioning it as an accessible entry point into the Mac ecosystem for students, professionals and small businesses alike.

Available in four vibrant colour options, the MacBook Neo is powered by the A18 Pro chip — the same generation of Apple silicon that has helped redefine performance across Apple’s product range. In day-to-day use, that translates into smooth multitasking whether you’re working through spreadsheets, editing photos, streaming content or running business applications. Battery life is rated at up to 16 hours, giving the machine enough endurance to comfortably carry you through a full work or study day without reaching for a charger.

Alongside the new hardware, iStore is also making the switch to Mac easier for customers currently using older PC laptops. Through its PC Buy Back programme, customers can receive a guaranteed R3 000 trade-in value when moving from a qualifying PC to the MacBook Neo, lowering the barrier to entry for those considering their first Mac. The offer officially goes live on 11 March 2026.

Trade-ins remain a core part of the iStore upgrade experience. The retailer offers competitive valuations for both Mac and PC devices, allowing customers to offset the cost of a new Mac by trading in their current laptop. For many buyers, that can make stepping into a new MacBook significantly more attainable.

For those looking for added peace of mind, iStore also offers iCare for Mac, its extended protection and warranty plan. The service extends coverage beyond Apple’s standard warranty and can help maintain stronger trade-in value when it eventually comes time to upgrade again.

Customers who prefer to browse and compare devices digitally can do so through the iStore App, which provides a convenient way to explore the full Mac range, compare specifications and complete purchases directly from a smartphone. The app is designed to streamline the buying experience, allowing customers to move from research to checkout in just a few minutes.

In store, iStore’s Apple specialists remain available to help customers choose the right Mac for their needs. That includes assistance with setup, data transfers and guidance for those moving from a PC environment to macOS for the first time.

The MacBook Neo is available now through iStore locations nationwide as well as online at iStore.co.za, with pricing starting from R11 999. With its vibrant design, capable performance and competitive entry price — combined with trade-in incentives, expert support and flexible purchasing options the MacBook Neo aims to make the Mac experience more accessible than ever in the South African market.

Bucket Seat: VW Polo Vivo - Refreshed

The Polo Vivo remains one of South Africa's best selling passenger vehicles with over 425 000 units sold  locally and in Sub Saharan Africa, all of which were manufactured at their Kariega Plant just out Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. This week I got the opportunity to view the plant, which since February this year, is the only plant in the world to make the Polo and its derivatives. The visit was to view the refreshed Polo Vivo which hits the streets of Mzanzi this month. Many expected drastic changes to the current model as face-lifts go, this was pretty on par with nothing dramatic in terms of styling cues but lots of extras in terms of tech and safety.

The major talking about about these updates that the Vivo receives is that most of them were designed and manufactured right here in South Africa. The engineers in the plant talked us through the major design change which is the front bumper which is now more aligned to the Volkswagen design language, featuring a broader lower grille made up of slats that are pronounced by angular "boomerang" styled side pieces which are colour coded to the cars colour. The Polo Vivo also receives new headlights with corner bending lights on higher trims. The rear see's the "Vivo" name plate follow the new VW convention of being in center, again, another item which was designed locally and needed sign off from head office. The GT line gets an updated badge and not stick on decals like the older model.

The Vivo will be available in three variants, the entry level Vivo, mid level "Life" and the range topping "Style", There is also the range topping GT and a limited edition "Black Styling" package of which only 500 will be made. On the Life variant, it will feature a special 15-inch alloy wheel which was designed and made here in SA, dubbed "Ubomi"it is quite an attractive looking wheel for the mid range Vivo.

On the safety front, all Vivo's will come with front fog lamps and cornering light with day time running lights, Life and Style models will get Twin headlamps with integrated high beam assist. All Vivo's will have tyre pressure monitoring and get side airbags fitted into the driver and front passenger seats, taking the total airbags up to four now, making it one of the safest cars in its segment.

All Vivo models will come with new seats, each specific to its variant with unique designs, made from robust yet comfortable materials. Each design was carefully thought of for the various model and with thorough testing of the seats which was demonstrated to us in the quality control center of the plant. The major talking point has to be the new infotainment unit which replaces the old dated radio. A 9-inch high definition touch screen unit which, again was co-designed here in SA along with VW Argentina is a refreshing update to the cabin. It's easy to use and displays the cars info such as trip logs, fuel range, tyre pressures and has mobile apps which is connected via USB A cables.

Polo Vivo has 3 engines in its line up with the 1.4L naturally aspirated engine in the standard Vivo and Life models. This motor delivers 55kW in Vivo and 63kW in the Life and has a 5-speed manual gearbox. There is a 1.6L naturally aspirated motor that delivers 77kw that is available with a tiptronic auto gearbox in the Life and a 5-speed manual in the Style variants. The range topping GT now gets a 1.0L TSI engine that delivers 81kW and has a 5-speed manual gearbox. I drove the base line Vivo at the launch and truth be told, I found zero difference from the older model, it's a solid ride but lacks power especially with a load. It's build quality is solid and with the new updates makes it an affordable car that starts off at the same price as the outgoing model which is a major plus for the consumer.

Pricing:

1.4 55kW Vivo Manual - R266,600

1.4 63kW Life Manual - R288,500

1.6 77kW Life Tiptronic - R320,200

1.6 77kW Style Manual - R318,000

1.0 TSI 81kW GT Manual - R356,000

Bucket Seat: Suzuki Jimny 5-Door

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door is an exciting expansion of the popular Jimny series, which has gained a cult following for its compact size, off-road capabilities, and distinctive retro styling and that attractive price tag. The 5-Door version retains the rugged charm of the 3-Door model but adds practicality with increased interior space, making it a more versatile option for families and those who need extra room. I had the chance to spend a week with the Jimny 5-door to see if its more than just extra doors and space.

 DESIGN

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door carries forward the iconic boxy design, with its flat surfaces, upright windshield, and round headlights, reminiscent of classic off-roaders. The extended body maintains the Jimny’s tough, go-anywhere appearance while offering easier access to the rear seats and more cargo space. Despite the added length, the Jimny 5-Door remains compact and maneuverable, which is a significant advantage in urban environments and narrow trails. The design is quite an attractive one with many akining it to the popular Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon but on a smaller scale. Tuners globally have come up with some creative kits for the Jimny which transform its design too look like miniature versions of other popular bigger off roaders but for me, the standard look is good enough and there are so many aftermarket accessories to pimp it up, the options are endless!

PERFORMANCE

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door retains the same off-road prowess as its smaller sibling. It’s equipped with a ladder-frame chassis, solid axles at both ends, and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer gear, making it capable of tackling challenging terrains. The compact dimensions and short overhangs allow it to navigate tight trails and steep inclines with ease.Under the hood, the Jimny 5-Door is typically powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing around 100 horsepower. This engine is mated to either a 5-speed manual with an option of an automatic as well. While not particularly fast on highways, the engine is adequate for both city driving and off-road adventures. The Jimny's light weight contributes to its agility off-road, but on-road, it can feel a bit bouncy and less refined than more road-focused SUVs.Given its small size and engine, the Jimny 5-Door offers decent fuel efficiency, particularly in city driving where its compact dimensions and light weight are beneficial. However, fuel consumption can increase during off-road use or at higher speeds on highways as I found out when doing long distance travel with it.

COMFORT

Inside, the 5-Door Jimny offers a utilitarian yet functional interior. The materials are durable and easy to clean, reflecting the vehicle’s off-road nature. The additional rear doors make accessing the back seats more convenient, and the increased cabin space offers better comfort for passengers. However, while it is roomier than the 3-Door version, it’s still relatively compact, and taller passengers might find the rear seating somewhat tight on long journeys. The cargo space benefits from the extended body, making it more practical for carrying luggage or gear. The rear seats can be folded down to further expand the cargo area, although the space is still modest compared to larger SUVs. While the materials used are pretty durable, it's not the most comfortable car for long distance travels, the boxy design makes for lots of wind noise, the road noise in the cabin is pretty loud and the cheap stereo doesn't help drown all of this out, so its pretty prevalent when driving. The Jimny 5-Door is not packed with high-tech features, but it includes a larger touchscreen infotainment unit than the 3-door and has wireless mobile phone connectivity.

VERDICT

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door is a niche vehicle that excels in what it is designed for: rugged off-road capability in a compact, affordable package. It’s perfect for adventurers, off-road enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates a vehicle with character and charm. The added practicality of the 5-Door model makes it a more versatile option for daily use, though it still maintains the quirks and limitations of the Jimny lineage. The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door is priced competitively, offering great value for those seeking an affordable, capable off-road vehicle. Its charm lies in its simplicity, off-road capability, and unique style, which is hard to find at this price point. However, those looking for more comfort, space, and advanced features might need to consider other options or larger SUVs.

Bucket Tech: realme Business Update for SA

Last week I was invited to the Durban leg of the realme Buisness update for South Africa, at the event I got a chance to meet the South African team and learn about the hard work they've been putting into the brand over the last 9 months. Just some background on the brand as it is pretty new to the country, realme was founded in 2018 by Li Bingzhong, who was the former vice president of Oppo, the brand originally started as a sub-brand of Oppo eventually ventured as its own brand but the devices are still manufactured at the shared plant in China. Marketed as a phone for the youth, realme brand commitment is to offer mobile phones with powerful performance, stylish designs and sincere services to its users and judging by their products and pricing, they're keeping up to their promises.

Country manager Jace Chen led the introductions, given us insight into the brand and how far they've come since being a sub brand of a larger manufacturer. The brand is one of the fasting emerging mobile brands worldwide with it being in over 200 markets, with over 200 million users and in its short stint in South Africa they have also seen this trend follow. The brand also works closely with SA's three largest mobile operators to ensure the best deals are being offered on their devices, with some bundle options for select products too.

Gareth Clarke, realme Account lead for South Africa dropped some insightful figures during his presentation, to date, realme have sold over 20,000 devices in the 9 months they have been available in the country. realme product segment range expands over 4 offerings with for now, just the C series which has been available the longest being on the market and now the introduction of the Note and the Number series which I got a hands on experience with at the event.

realme is committed to empowering South African youth to be more daring through leap-forward technology and design,” says Gareth Clarke, realme Account Lead for SA. “The combination of high-end features and accessible pricing in the new realme 12 Series embodies our goal of delivering compelling value propositions for the midrange smartphone market.”

Bucket Seat: ISUZU mu-X 1.9

The ever popular SUV segment is booming in the country and whilst many are opting for the smaller fuel efficient models, the larger 7-seater models are still the ones that most have their eye on. But with the increase in fuel prices and high economy averages that come with these big engine SUV's, its not a very attractive segment, this is why Isuzu took the decision to launch their popular mu-X model with a new value orientated 1.9-litre engine and I got the chance to experience it at their local media drive in Durban yesterday. This expands the local model line-up to a total of six mu-X models, the largest range yet for the company.

Adding a new entry-level 1.9-litre model significantly broadens the appeal of the mu-X. It is perfect for customers who are drawn to the outstanding space, comfort and versatility provided by our popular SUV, but require greater affordability and lower running costs,” says Kevin Fouche, Department Executive: Product Planning and Programme Management at ISUZU Motors South Africa.

This is the first time we’ve offered the mu-X with the proven 1.9-litre Ddi engine and at this price point. We believe the timing is perfect due to the continued growth of the SUV segment,” Fouche says. “The competitive pricing makes it an attractive proposition for family-oriented customers making the step up from a sedan, hatchback or bakkie, and we are confident that the proven 1.9-litre engine’s exceptional fuel economy will be a major drawcard too.”

Now I know what you must be thinking, a 1.9-liter engine propelling such a large SUV with 7-seats? Surely its not going to drive well, on the contrary my first impressions were rather surprised. Yes, its not going to win any 0-100km/h races but you have to look at the target market for this sort of car. I hate to use the term but soccer moms are top of the list. Spacious cabin, loads of space in the boot and just the right amount of tech that keeps the mu-X on par with most of the competitors in the segment. The 1.9-liter Ddi motor produces 110kW and 350Nm of torque, which is more that sufficient for the car. Yes with a full load it would tend to feel some strain but nothing out of the ordinary from your other smaller cars. The thing is, with the people who will be driving this model, they won't be in a rush to get that they will need maximum power and torque all the time and the roads would most likely be urban and not highway driving. That being said, on long distances, the mu-X 1.9 can give you well over a 1000km from a single tank, that is a return trip from Durban to Jhb!

Styling wise, Isuzu have done an amazing job, it is one of the most attractive looking SUV's on the market, nothing too brash but modern and stylish that is very easy on the eye. The new Bi-LED headlamps have a sleek finish which integrates well with the front end which has a very edgy molded grille and bumper. The fog lamps are fitting into isometric style housings on either side of the front bumper. It really gives the car a great modern look, the rest of the design is smooth with the back well rounded off with the rear lights being edgy and finished off in a smoked housing. The rims have a turbine blade like inspired design with the alloy colour being a light grey that picks up the profile of the car.

The interior is extremely spacious, the 7-inch infotainment screen is easy to use and has built-in mobile apps with wireless connectivity. There is a USB B outlet in front with an aux outlet as well as power point,  the second row gets two USB B outlets so there's not fighting over who gets to charge their phones. The car comes with standard air-conditioning, no climate control but if it managed to quell the Durban humidity, I'm sure it will be fine anywhere else in the country. The seats are extremely comfortable and I'm told even the third row seating is comfy for adults, I'll have to check on that when I get it on test but on the road, little to none road noise, the ride quality was unfault-worthy and overall a very pleasant experience.

Isuzu have something special on their hands with this one, and with a starting price of R708,000 I can see it doing quite well in the local market.

Bucket Seat: Toyota Corolla Sedan XR (Manual)

If you had to mention the Toyota Corolla, it wouldn't really spring excitement to anyone, it's not that sort of car. For years its been one the brands best selling cars, with it being priced right, the perfect size and most importantly having that great reliability and holding a good resale value. The Corolla also had its roots in SA with it being assembled in the plant in Durban so for many of the locals, it meant a lot to own one. However, with the latest generation of the Corolla, much of what I've just told you has changed. Toyota have chose to cut it from the assembly line in Prospecton and get the model fully imported, the car is no long mundane but rather exciting while still having great reliability as well as giving the consumer bang for every buck they spend on it. Being a Corolla owner myself, I was very much looking forward to spending some time in the new model to see what all the fuss was about, and from the first instant I knew exactly why.

DESIGN

No matter who you are, you can't deny that the new Corolla looks great, I mean we all saw the hatch last year and were blown away by the design. A car that we were so used to being run of the mill, playing it safe design has transformed into this elegant and sporty being. The Sedan is no different as it sports the exact same front but with a boot, and I can it's not an eyesore as compared to many hatch come sedan models. This one actually works and blends in beautifully! Toyota's new design language is really pronounced in this design, with it borrowing some elements from its sister company Lexus. The Corolla has a large front grille which is the main feature of the front end, with lights that swoop from either end to meet in the middle where the badge sits proudly. The daytime running LED lights pronounce the shape of the headlamp which follows the swoop down to the wheel arch where its met with the front bumper in a rather bulky but sporty fashion. The cuts and lines really give the car dimension but doesn't seem overdone. The side profile is very similar to the previous generation model but with new large 18 inch bi-colour rims, it makes it hard to notice. The rear end of the car is tied up nicely with the rear lights following the swoop of the tailgate and have beading along the back linking both together. The rear diffuser has a large blacked out portion which adds to the aggressive look as well as some faux vents on either side. Overall, stunning look car even in white.

PERFORMANCE

The previous generation Corolla saw the highest engine being a naturally aspirated 1.8-litre and many thought that would be the end of the legendary 2.0-litre engine for the Corolla's but somehow the guys in Japan went back on their decision for this latest model offering it both a 1.8 and 2.0, the one I had was the range topping XR model in the 2.0 option. Performance wise, it was quite responsive with the manual gearbox, offering 200Nm of torque and 125kW. On the road it was sublime, I've never experienced a ride like this in a Toyota Sedan, and my dad has a Camry so I should know! The feel was solid, the power was on point, there was no time I found myself fighting for torque, down changing for sudden loss of power or any of that. The engine even at low revs still manages to cope when going up hill and even if there is a need to down change its virtually effortless. I do wonder how the CVT gearbox would cope in situations like this but I'll reserve judgement on that until I get one to drive.

COMFORT

Being a medium sized family car, the Corolla is rather spacious, decked out in half leather, half material trim the seats looked good but felt even better. Remember how I spoke about how good the ride quality is? Well the seats also have a part to play in that as they are super comfortable. I know, that is the last thing you'd be expecting me to say about a Corolla but I will go on the record on saying that that the ride in this new Corolla is even better than some of the luxury German sedans I've reviewed in the past. The Corolla is also packed with standard features that you would pay an arm and two legs for in European models. The drivers seat is fully electric adjustable, it has voice command, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, a large infotainment screen which has Android Auto and Apple Car Play pre-loaded, voice control and all one touch power windows. The Corolla also has smart keyless entry, Bi-LED headlamps which are damn great, would have been nice if they had adaptive lights but that's not a biggy. One small gripe I did have with it, was that it didn't have auto lock on the doors when driving so you had to manually lock the door all the time. I mean my Corolla is 7 years old now and it has that!

VERDICT

Have Toyota done the Corolla justice with this new model? Hell yes, in fact I think they knocked it out the park! To me, this model ushers in a new era for the model, saying that its no longer just the middle class sedan as its coming to knock on the doors of some of the heavy weights. With Toyota's pricing point, keeping this model well under R500,000 and the features it has as standard, it really will get keener interest from people who are looking to get a new car but not sure if its worth spending that extra 80 to 100 thousand on a German or European model. With the Toyota Corolla Quest on offer, that will still attract the lower income earners that just want a decent family size sedan that is comfortable and has the necessary equipment to keep everyone happy. This XR model is brilliant in my books and even has me considering a trade in on my Sprinter, but don't tell it that as it might get jealous!
