Bucket Scene: Lupa Osteria - Ballito

Ballito, once a small coastal town which predominately was cane fields once upon a time, is now one of the fastest growing towns in KwaZulu Natal. With the growth brings about new opportunities for business and while this town already has some gem of eateries, it's ready to welcome another and we went down to try it out. Lupa Osteria, is no stranger to the Durban restaurant scene, having already established stores in Hillcrest, Westville and Durban North, it was time the Dolphin Coast got a taste of what they're cooking. The name coming from Italian origins with Lupa being the immortal Roman wolf goddess who helped establish the city of Rome and Osteria originally meaning a place that serves wine and simple food, it has now been taken up a notch with a bit more that is catered. The masterminds behind the brand are Chef and Owner Chris Black and Owner/ Entrepreneur Guy Clever, they've built the restaurants name up in a tricky Durban market and has become a popular destination for families and friends to gather around for some good food, as they offer a great variety to suit even the fussiest of eater and have a great range of beverages.

Lupa Ballito opened its doors to the public last Friday and last night I was invited to come dine at the new venue. Located in Ballito Lifestyle center, one of the original go-to malls up the coast has undergone a drastic revamp and a much needed one. The strip mall is now more lifestyle orientated has a great new food market and restaurant layout, Lupa Osteria is located at the key front side location and features an outdoor deck area as well as an outdoor bar area which is all soon to be open. The interior is decorated superbly, with a rustic Italian feel and the pasta making area concealed in glass at the entrance of the shop. The bar is magnificent with green marble tops, and a wide selection of wines, spirits, beers and craft beers.

On entering we were warmly greeted by the host and seated promptly, our waiter was soon at our table telling us their range of drinks, I opted for the house brew on tap, called Wolf Lager, appropriately named for the restaurant, it is brewed by Cape Brewing Company exclusively for Lupa Osteria. This golden lager is crisp, refreshing, easy on the palate and fruity notes, perfect for a summers day and perfect for a meal. Having frequented the other Lupa's before, I wanted to try something different for a starter, something that I haven't already tried so I opted for the Italian Nachos. Now while we're all used to getting crispy tortilla chips drenched in cheese, avo and sour cream, these ones were a bit different. On the plate laid crispy fried ravioli, filled with 3 cheeses with a fiery arrabbiata dipping sauce to accompany it. Normally ravioli is a bit dry but these was the total opposite, the filling was moist and flavorful, the panko coating was crisp to perfection and the frying didn't take away the moisture of the pasta. Overall, it was superb and a great starter to have on your own or to share.

Being an Italian restaurant, I wanted to keep the theme going, deciding whether to go for a pizza or a pasta was my hardest decision but being seated close to the pasta prep area, I couldn't help but want to try out their freshly made pasta. I went for the Fettuccine Con Pollo, which on the menu is described as "Chicken and a mix of mushrooms, light cream, garlic, white wine and toasted pine nuts". I'm a sucker for fries and one of the sides were parmesan fries, even though we were having pasta, I needed to try these! After having a shot of the house made lemoncello, it was the perfect palate cleaner to prepare us for the mains, I was keen to try the house made pasta, I haven't had freshly made pasta before and really was looking forward to it. Lupa say that their pasta is extruded through a die cutter made from bronze creating a rougher texture on the surface, thus allowing the pasta to grip more of the sauce. This was evident from every bit of my main. The pasta was cooked al dente, it was light but captured all the flavours on the plate. The meal was light but filling at the same time, the toasted pine nuts added great texture to the dish, normally I am a fan of added extra chili and garlic to my pasta dishes but for this it was not needed.

Having devoured the entire mains, little space remained for dessert but having a look at the menu, Lupa has a good few options for those with a sweet tooth, one that sticks our for me is the chocolate and caramel fondant which is served with ice-cream but I settled for a scoop of gelato. With five flavours to choose from, I went with the caramel, served in either a bowl or a cone, the scoop is a rather generous portion but with every spoonful leaving your mouth wanting more, it wasn't an effort to finish. The bowl option comes with a sugar cone slice in it, so you sort of get the best of both worlds if you want a cone purely to eat but don't want to deal with the rest of it. The gelato itself is light and creamy, the flavour not too overpowering and definitely a favourite for all ages.

Overall, I can only see Lupa Osteria in Ballito being as successful as the other branches, apart from offering a wide variety of cuisine, the laid back atmosphere, attentive staff and great location will make it a popular spot for most locals and holiday makers. I'll definitely be returning to try out more things on that menu soon and to see the rest of the restaurant take shape when the deck and outdoor bar is open and running.

2017 Wartburger Spring Festival

Nestled just outside Pietermaritzburg, lies a quaint town of Wartburg, having passed there a few times, you might miss it if you blink but many don't know about this little wonder and the history it holds. When I tell people about it, many respond, "what burg?", so here's a quick history lesson for you. The town was settled in the 1850's by German families, and is named after the Wartburg Castles in Eisenach, Germany. To this day, the Wartburg area has had a large population of German speaking citizens who predominantly farm in the surrounding area around town. Okay, enough with the lessons, time to focus on the main reason of this post, the Festival! In it's second year running, the Wartburg Spring Festival is getting ready to host the masses coming in to enjoy all things German.  The event will build on the long-standing traditions of the Wartburg Lutheran Church Bazaar, one of the most anticipated events on the town's calendar with its sale of processed German meats, advents biscuits and other fresh produce.

This year the festival sees Orion Group's Wartbuger Hof Hotel joining in to host a fun family event in collaboration with the Wartburg Lutheran Church. The bigger and better festival will see stall holders and exhibitors from as far as Cape Town showcasing their artisanal items to the public. Some of the stallholders and craftsmen, include the top KwaZulu-Natal craft brewers, including Lion's River Brewery and Railroad Brewey. Nadia Gmeiner and Antoinette Kleyn, the event organisers, said that they were ecstatic to be involved in such an event. "The town of Wartburg is a beautiful gem and our hotel, the Wartburger Hof, owes a lot of its success and support to the people of this town. For us to be a part of the festivities and the camaraderie among the brilliant townsfolk is such an honor for us and we hope to increase the support and numbers to this years event."

The Wartburger Spring Festival promises to  delight the young and old alike. There will be a number of stalls which range from arts and crafts to artisanal food and beverages including traditional German cuisine that is sure to delight even the most discerning palette. The even will take place on Saturday, 21 October 2017, on the grounds of the Wartburger Hof Hotel. It is a nice excuse for many to explore the countryside and will be a great outing for the entire family. For those wanting to host a stall at the Festival, please contact Nadia Gmeiner on 011-718 6416 or email beerfest@wartburghotel.co.za. Carver's Weiss Sunday Lunching

Craft Beer has been around in SA for a few years now and has start to make it's way into the mainstream market. As much as micro brewers hate for this to happen, it's good for business. While the majority of the beer drank in the country is still very much controlled by the major brands, it's good to note that the countries largest brewer, SAB have taken note of the Craft Beer sector and decided to launch a specialty variety to the market, namely Carver's Weiss.

This past Sunday I was invited to an exclusive launch of the new Carver's Weiss beer, for "an afternoon of Easy" as the email said. The venue, the laid back, open air garden patio of the Market Cafe in Morningside, Durban. The event kicked off with an ice cold bottle Carver's Weiss upon arrival, the venue was decked out by the Carver's Weiss team in the colours and logo's of the beer. The host of the afternoon was none other than SA funny man Dave Livensohn who had the guests in stitches with his witty comments and chirps.

When looking at the bottle, one of the aspects that grabs your attention first is the label at the back is upside down, reason for this is, they say the best way to enjoy the beer is if you tilt it upside down for a few seconds to allow the sediments to float back up and mix with the rest of the liquid, and hence reading the label would allow sufficient time for this. They had wooden boards for us to tilt the bottles on which were quite cool but took some time to master.

The team flew in a chef to prepare a meals for the guest that best matches the brew and brings out the variants and notes of the beer. It was quite evident from starters to the mains, the many distinct flavours that is present in Carver's Weiss. From citrus, notes to vanilla and caramel, the afternoon of food and beer took ones palate on a journey of taste.

To complete the afternoon of easy, Carver's team provided entertainment in the form of SA musician extraordinaire, Nhlanhla Majozi who is a real one man band! Playing all his own instruments and treated the crowd to a musical feast of his popular tracks. Also to keep us busy, we had Jenga blocks on each table to see who can survive the longest.

Carver'sWeiss is smooth drinking beer that is an inbetween-er of a light and heavy brew but one that's an easy drinking one. Perfect for a summer's afternoon.

Bucket Scene: Republik

When it comes to guys, there's just two B's you need to keep them happy, Beer and Burgers, well there is one other B but for the sake of keeping things clean I won't mention it. Now you take those two things and enhance it, you get Craft Beer and Gourmet Burgers, open up a place that serves just that and you're onto something special. I'm not sure if that was the thinking behind opening the place but I'd like to think Matt Richardson and Tayne Draper had something similar in mind when they decided to create Republik.

Their motto is "For The People", their aim is to encourage everyone around to eat responsibly and act responsibly by going back to our roots through means of handcrafted, great tasting, high-quality, natural and free-range produce, while striving to act in a a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable manner. It's a mouthful, I know but so is their burgers! Seriously though, we live in an age where people accept the most unnatural, over processed, food as suitable for consumption and by eating these things on a daily basis, we're only doing more harm to ourselves so it's great to see a place that doesn't stand for that ish.

I've visited the guys down at Durban North a few times since they opened and never once left disappointed, the staff are friendly and ever willing to help with your choice of burger and they add that family type value to the place, a quick example would be Matt remembering myself and my friends after visiting them for the first time 3 weeks prior, knowing what we ordered and what we preferred. You don't find that genuine client service in a hurry and that was one of the things that blew me away with Republik.

Enough jibba jabba and onto the main part, the food and drink! They have a wide selection of Craft Beer, mostly local and they have a number of them on tap. In fact they have so many, they even have a separate menu for it! All the local favourites can be found including Darling Brew, Union Brewers and Jack Black. The nice thing about the menu is that it gives you a brief description of each beer so you know exactly what you're ordering as many other places that serve craft just have in the fridge for you to choose.

The food, I love my meat and since I do not eat beef do to religious purposes, I more than often find myself eating chicken most of the time but I was glad to see Republik do offer a lamb patty option that comes in at an extra price but for me, if its good quality lamb, no price is too much. They also have an ostrich option, if you prefer the big lean bird. The menu is pretty straight forward, you choose your base, you choose your patty and then your toppings. If you're on Tim Noakes, your base can be a no bun base, if you don't want a roll but still don't want just a patty you could go for the hipster option which has portobello mushrooms substituted for the buns. Sides include, shoe string fries, zucchini fries or sweet potato crisps. All of which are served with a honey mustard dipping sauce which is the bomb.

If you want something different, you could always try their specials of the week which includes a choice of 3, their beef burger, lamb burger or chicken burger. I found myself going for these on all 3 occasions that I have visited for dinner and every time I have been pleasantly surprised. They keep to their word with only the best and freshest produce and no matter what their chef concocts in his kitchen, it always tastes damn good but by far my favourite has to be their "Chips, Cheese and Mutton gravy Lamb Burger Special". Inspired by a Durban favourite, Johnnies Roti, this burger had everything in it that made it local and true to Durban. I have no idea where they got the mutton gravy from but it was authentic curry and work so well with the cheddar cheese and thin, crisp potato fries. Whats also great is that you can pick this burger up with two hands and eat it, many of these other gourmet burger place tend to put so much on the burger, that it becomes a mission just to eat it.

If you're looking for something other than burgers, they do sell salads and rolls, with your choice of toppings. Also other than beer, they also make some damn fine coffees, yes they have a menu for that too! Explaining the various variants. The other day I found myself there to meet a friend for coffee. I ordered the Cotardo which is fairly new on the Durban coffee scene but a great inbetweener from your espresso or cappuccino, now you're going to want something sweet to go with your coffee, thankfully they stock a selection of donut delightness from Wicked Donuts.

Over the place is another winner in my books and a must visit. While their food range might not be extensive, they concentrate well on the ones they have and make your experience worth while every time. I don't have to say I'll be visiting them often because I already have!

Cape Town Festival of Beer

Beer festivals are becoming as common as guys selling cellphone chargers at the traffic lights, they're all the same, have the same boring theme trying to mimic the German Ocktoberfest and the selection of beer on offer is rather poor. Hence for me, there is only one true Beer Festival and that is the Cape Town Festival of Beer, being held from the 28th till the 30th of November 2014.

This year sees it running for the 5th year in succession and I've been visiting it since it's inception in 2009, bar last year due to poor organisation of a family wedding which clashed with the dates but I'm back to celebrate in the festivities. Organisers have told me that this year is going to be bigger and better with over 200 different beers on offer from local and international, micro and mega brewers. From ale's to lagers they will have it all. Some of the names to look out for are Darling Brew, &Union, CBC and one of my personal favourites, Jack Black. Some of the new comers include, Striped Horse, Brothers in Arms, Red Bridge, Just Brewing Co, Soweto Gold and Savage Brew. Interesting fact about Just Brewing Co, Kyle from there is only 19, he began brewing with his dad and after he matriculated carried on instead of heading to varsity. Obviously he knew beer was the answer to everything.

Apart from beer, there will be a host of gourmet food stalls to keep your taste buds satisfied. You can find the likes of Kitchen Cowboys, headed by Pete Goffe-Wood of Masterchef fame, Black Market Sandwiches, Wicked Waffles, La Pizzeria, El Burro (which I've heard is a must try!), Raith, Tap Room and VOD Biltong to provide the munchies.

There is plenty of entertainment lined up for the whole weekend with Newton and Red Lettuce playing on Friday, followed by Los Taco's, The Rockerfellas and DJ Marshall on Saturday, with Rivertones and DJ Marshall bring the festival to an end on Sunday. Also there is plenty sport on the go with the big one being on Saturday when the Boks take on the Welsh, there will be plenty big screens for you to catch all the action live whilst sipping on a pint of cool refreshing beer.

This years festival is sure to be a blast and I recommend you make the effort to come down and enjoy it, trust me when I see it's worth the hype. Tickets are available from www.webtickets.co.za, R150 for Adults and R50 for kids, if you want to book a table for 10 or more people, email: info@capetownfestivalofbeer.com for reservations and queries. Spot you there this weekend!

Amstel Lite is here!

In this modern day lifestyle that we lead on a day to day basis, many are opting to go healthy, whether is going on new diets created by crazy professors, increasing their training or attempting marathons or running over mountains, the name of the game is get fit and lead a healthier life. To achieve this, cutting down on calories is a must but that means giving up some of your favourite things to eat and drink but the guys at Amstel have taken note of this and earlier this month launched Amstel Lite.

Like some of the other "light" variants on the market, Amstel ensures that while their new beer contains 25% less calories and only 4% alcohol, they haven't altered the taste. “We have worked extremely hard to ensure that Amstel Lite still tastes like a full-flavoured beer. Just because it’s lite, doesn’t mean it has to be light on taste, and taste is something we will never compromise on.” says Amstel's marketing manager Diederik Vos. Also Amstel Lite is brewed just the same as Amstel Lager, in 21 days to ensure a premium quality product that one can purchase in either a glass bottle or can in various sizes. Both of which are packages in a new eye catching packaging.

To celebrate the launch of their new product, Amstel hosted parties in the 3 major cities. I was lucky enough to attend the Durban leg of the launch at the popular township hotspot Max's in Umlazi. Nestled in the hustle that is one of the biggest townships outside Durban, the vibe was incredible and nothing like I experienced before. To add to it, Amstel brought the party to town with a host of the best local talent at the moment in SA. From Twinz on Decks, Casper Nyovest to K.O and Kid X who's song Caracara is currently topping the local charts. Although it was on a Sunday, the party carried on to the early hours of Monday morning with plenty of Amstel Lite to keep the party going on. So next time you find yourself a bar, opt for the Lite option.
