The great trek

Its that time of the year, the Summer holidays and with brings half of Gauteng to the coast. The annual migration of the Vaalie begins now and lasts till mid Jan and they have short stint in April during Easter. The reason for my post is not to discourage visitors to our lovely province but probably to enlighten them on their journey down. My job allows me to travel to various parts of the province and today I traveled to Nquthu, its somewhere in the bundu's but I had to take the N3, which is the main artery linking Durban to Joburg to get there. I bemoan travelling on that road because of the high number of trucks that one is faced with when travelling up (i.e from Durban to the midlands) heading down isn't so bad as long as you keep to the speed limit.

Now, KZN is the one province in the country that has a zero tolerance on people who break the speed limit, yes I know many will get away this year by slipping the officer some Randela's but if you do get a cop who practices the law, you will get locked away. So if you want to speed, do it in Gauteng or the Free State... I'm joking, I don't endorse speeding, speed kills, for real, I've seen what happens when shit goes bad.

When traveling in my lovely province you will notice signs on the freeway saying "Freeway Being monitored by Average Speed Cameras", no these are not for decor. What they mean is that along the route they have placed cameras at certain points to track your speed. Now on my drive today I noticed many, many cars with GP number plates doing the same thing. Every time they went under the camera, they jammed the brakes and slowed down to 60kph, then once they passed it, they accelerated back to to Mach 1. Now, I'm not sure if its just these okes or everyone in Gauteng doesn't understand how these camera's work.

The camera itself doesn't detect your speed, hence its tiny. The only thing it picks up is the time, date and your number plate. When you pass the first one, it takes a picture of your car and records the exact time you passed, then when you pass the second camera it does the same thing. Then what happens is they take the two pictures, work out the time difference and do some grade 5 math to calculate if you've been speeding. Its not rocket science, I mean the cops are doing this. So I appeal to you all of those travelling, don't go full retard and brake like crazy when going past the cameras, it doesn't matter what speed you doing and the limit is either 120, 100 or 80, there is no reason for you to slow down to 60.

So to end it off, enjoy your holidays in KZN, it seriously is a great province and one I'm proud to live in! Be safe on the roads!

Its a Passion...

Not many get the sport and to those that watch it, its more than a sport, its a passion. It is no doubt the worlds most glamorous sport but formula One racing has always been a favourite of mine, growing up watching the likes of Senna, Mansel and Hill then moved on to that all too familiar chiseled face of Michael Schumacher. Many complained that he made the sport boring by winning so often but for me, it just showed how good he was and what a good car he had.

This past Sunday saw the last race of the 2012 calendar which has been one of the most thrilling seasons to date and the race at Interlagos summed it up perfectly. It was lined with drama from start to finish! Sebastian Vettel held a 13 point lead in the title challenge heading into the race from Fernando Alonso and judging from his form from the past few races it was Vettel's to lose. Alonso ended the race in 2nd place but Vettel finished in 6th which was enough to see him clinch his 3rd title in succession. The German who had a shaky start which involved a collision managed to see himself home with enough points to pip Alonso by just 3 points to the title. Many say the better driver won but I beg to differ.

Vettel is a great driver and is poised to be one of the greats but was he really the best driver of the season? This may be biased coming from a Ferrari fan and an avid supporter but I think Fernando Alonso was the driver of the season. Why? Well Ferrari has a rich Formula One heritage but these past few seasons the car they produced just didn't seem good enough to compete with the other top teams. They were always the 3rd or 4th fastest team in free practice and the qualifying speeds were not the greatest even though they did make the top 10 on most occasions. Reliability on the other hand wasn't a problem for the team from Italy, which probably helped Alonso a lot during his title challenge this season.

He drove a mediocre care but he got the points and he was consistent bar the two incidents he had in Belgium and Japan, it could have been a very different story for him. The one thing that stood out for me from him was his determination, whilst others never thought it were possible, he always was focused that he could do it. Especially during the last few races of the calendar, when he finished on the podium in Abu Dhabi and Texas his focus was 100% and he showed his determination each time.

One can also say that Lewis Hamilton could have been champion again, he has had a lot of nasty luck this season from reliability issues to accidents. His seen it all and had to pay heavily, hopefully with his new team next year his fortune could change.

This season saw Kimi Raikkonen make his return but also saw a legend Michael Schumacher retire...again. Many questioned his return to F1, saying it just damaged his reputation but I beg to differ. He always drew attention and was the right ambassador for the new Mercedes team that was launched with his old boss Ross Brawn. Yes he never won a race in his return but he added his own elements to the races and we did see that old Schumi spark now and then. As for Kimi, the Fin is a classic, none more so than his comments over the radio during his win in Abu Dhabi and not forgetting his victory speech on the podium!

Its a long wait till it all starts again next year in Melbourne but we're left with lovely memories from this past season which will only make us crave for more. I hope it will be equally if not more exciting than the past season. Keep the Passion!

Nokia HERE

We've all got smart phones for various reasons, one of them being to make phone calls but with the dawn of 3G/4G and all the goodness that came with it, our phones can do so much more. One of which is serve as a GPS. Now as most phones with small screens weren't the best for this feature it helped out none the less. The GPS apps gave you the bare minimum which is, location, directions, navigation, places of interest and speed limits but what if it could offer you more? How you may ask? Yes there are other things such as speed traps and traffic notifications but imagine if you could edit your GPS and add more info on certain places and share it with others also you could see what others had to share about other places.

That's what Nokia HERE is all about, they call it a "location Cloud" and here's what Nokia's CEO Stephen Elop had to say: "People want great maps, and with HERE we can bring together Nokia’s location offering to deliver people a better way to explore, discover and share their world. Additionally, with HERE we can extend our 20 years of location expertise to new devices and operating systems that reach beyond Nokia. As a result, we believe that more people benefit from and contribute to our leading mapping and location service."

Sounds interesting and it does get better, Nokia has worked with Mozilla in developing HERE, they are one of the leaders in HTML5 and web development applications and key to that is location, Vice President of Products,  for Mozilla Jay Sullivan had this to say: "We are excited to work with Nokia as the combination of Firefox OS and HERE's location platform provides rich possibilities for mobile application developers to create amazing experiences for users."

Navigating around in 2D is one thing but what if you had the benefit of exploring a location in 3D? With HERE that would be possible as Nokia is planned to acquire Berkely, Calif company "earthmine" who's reality capture and processing technologies will become integral in HERE's 3D map making capabilities.

Now I know what you thinking, pretty impressive but I wont buy a Nokia so I wont be using this application but that's where you wrong. Nokia are making this software available for the 2 major giants in the mobile industry, that being Apple and Andriod. With the flop that was Apple maps on iOS6, HERE will be a welcomed relief to those with iPhones and it should be available to download on iTunes pretty soon if not already. The Andriod uses on the other hand will have to wait until 2013 to try it out. The reason for this is it is aimed at enabling partners to create location-based applications for Android or Apple devices with Nokia’s leading content.

Just when you thought you heard it all, like a TV infomercial ...but wait, theres more! Imagine you walk down a street, see a rather interesting building but want to know more about it. What if I told you, all you had to do was pick your phone up and with your camera point to the building and all the info on it will be brought up on your phone? Cool right? Well that's what LiveSight™ is all about.

As part of its announcement, Nokia introduced LiveSight™, a technology based on a highly accurate, 3D map of the world.  LiveSight™ provides the most precise and intuitive augmented reality experience and uses a phone’s camera viewfinder to make discovering the world as easy as lifting up a phone. Nokia City Lens, which was developed exclusively for Nokia Lumia devices, is the first application providing a LiveSight-enabled experience. “Establishing a new brand is the right move for Nokia in the map and location business.  Nokia's assets in this space are world class. We believe mapping and location will be increasingly important to developing next generation devices and services across a wide array of segments,” said Crawford Del Prete, executive vice president and head of worldwide research at IDC.

I know most people think Nokia had its hey day and now its just a dying brand but I've been using my Lumia 800 for roughly 7 months now and to say I'm impressed is an understatement, sure there is a few things that they could do to improve it but the same could be said for many other devices. Also with them using the  Windows 8 OS in the newer models it could prove key for businesses that use Microsoft for easy synchronisation. It will take time for them to get back into the market but don't right them off just yet.

Monday Choon: Tiesto feat. Allure - Pair of dice

Tiesto is undoubtedly one of the worlds best DJ's and although many say he has lost his game in the trance world, I think he is just adapting to the trends of present. He still is making chart topping tunes, none more so than this track in which he teamed up with Allure. It shot straight to the number spot on beatport and stayed there for over a week. I'll be honest, when I first heard this track I didn't really like it but after hearing it a few times on Tiesto's Club Life podcasts it has grown on me.

Lunch with Glenmorangie

Last week Friday, I along with Marc Forrest and Kyle Fraser were invited to lunch at the Oyster Box with Glenmorangie Whisky. Some might not have heard of the brand before and I must admit it wasn't until this years Durban July did I discover this single malt Scotch whisky. The tent I was at had stocked up by Jack Daniels and once the stocks of the US bourbon were depleted, I had no option but to try the original Glenmorangie. I was pleasantly surprised by it, being a whisky drinker myself I found the tastes quite different. Yes I mostly drink mix blends but what was evident in this was its fruity nature, something that I haven't picked up in a whisky before.

Karen Fullerton who is the Global brand ambassador for Glenmorangie was in Durban for FNB's Whisky Live exhibition at the Durban ICC, so it was a unique opportunity for us to meet her along with Patrick John Leslie from the Moet - Hennessy group of South Africa, seeing that I didn't get the opportunity to visit the event this year. Learning first hand from Karen about the Glenmorangie was quite an experience, she is so passionate about the brand and their product, it just leaves one fascinated about it.

Here are some facts about what makes Glenmorangie unique to other whisky's:
  • They have the tallest stills in Scotland, ensuring that their spirit is the lightest, purest and most elegant in the business.
  • They only use the finest ingredients for their whiskys, one of which they pride on is Scottish grown barley. They're one of the few that don't use imported barley.
  • The casks are made from hand selected oak trees and are only ever filled twice.
  • The whisky making traditions have been passed down from generation to generation, ensuring things are done the same way as when the founder William Matheson did so.
Oysters and Glenmorangie original
We started off the lunch with a shot of the original, Karen took us through the various aroma's and tastes before suggesting a starter to pair it with. Oysters were the winner, the saltiness of the oysters brought out other tastes to the whisky that we didn't pick up on when sipping it before.

1st fill and 2nd fill samples
Before we ordered our mains, Karen brought out some samples of the whiskys taken from the still. One was from the first fill which is right at the top and the 2nd was from the 2nd fill. The contrasts in both the samples was quite evident and surprising seeing that they were taken from the same still, where by not only did the colour vary but also textures and tastes.

The case Signet comes in.
For lunch we were treated to something very special, Karen brought along a bottle of Glenmorangie's signature whiskys, the Signet.  A lot about this whisky is kept a close secret but what they can tell us is that it is a fusion of unique and rare elements and is the richest whisky in their range. The whisky is aged in a made to order cask and made with a chocolate malt barely. The thing that gets your first is the aroma's, there is a rich coffee smell almost that of an espresso and elements of citrus to it. When you take a sip, you notice the rich texture as its almost sherry like then the explosion of tastes take over. From the chocolate, to the orange, hint of peaches and also coconut. It almost sounds like a dessert and too good to have with a meal but as I found out while having prawns as my main, paring it with certain foods accentuates other elements of the whisky.

Karen Fullerton takes us through the tasting of Signet
Seeing that the whisky did have that sweetness to it, Karen suggested that we order something chocolaty for our dessert to enhance the chocolate malt barely. Never have I had whisky  with dessert so this was a new experience for me! Just like the main, the dessert allowed other elements of the whisky to stand out, one could get more of the chocolate taste and it felt almost espresso like. Needless to say I finished glass and my plate with ease.

chocolate fudge brownies with Glenmorangie Signet
Although it was just a few hours, the amount I learned during lunch from Karen about the Glenmorangie Whisky family it feels like I've known about it forever. Their whiskys are really a side step from the norm and I recommend any whisky lover to taste them, the Signet might be out of the price range for some, seeing that it retails for about R2000 a bottle but the original does provide ones palate with a journey of taste. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity as the helped educate me on single malt whisky so I hope this isn't the first and last time I heard from the brand!
