Skrillex Mothership Tour SA

Well if you didn't hear about it by now, then its safe to say you've been living under a rock. Electric Music SA  the same guys who brought you Deadmau5, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Nicky Romero and most recently Swedish House Mafia are bringing Skrillex to our shores! The electro dubstep producer will be down in March for a 3 part tour, visiting the 3 major cities (Cape Town, Joburg and Durban).  I personally cannot wait to see him in concert, wasn't the biggest fan of his stuff but after hearing his live set from Ultra Music Festival last year featuring 12th Planet, I was sold! The guy is a talent of note and at only aged 25 he has been nominated for 5 Grammys of which he won 3 ("Best Dance/Electronica Album," "Best Dance Recording," and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical"). His single "Breakin a sweat" featuring the Doors was one of my favourite choon's of 2012 and his remix of Avicii's Levels is probably the best from the lot.

MEDIA RELEASE FROM ELECTRIC MUSIC SA

Skrillex Mothership Tour CT venue change
Samsung Galaxy Experience and Electric are proud to bring the Skrillex Mothership SA Tour powered by 5FM and MK, to South Africa. Skrillex will be visiting Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban at the beginning of March for his 2013 (and first) South African tour.
The Cape Town venue has just been changed to the Ostrich Farm following the massive success of Swedish House Mafia at the same venue.  The reason for the change is that the capacity at Thunder City had been restricted and we didn’t want to run the risk of letting down any Skrillex fans.

  • Saturday 2 March at H2O, Wild Waters in Johannesburg - Doors open 12pm

Blackberry 10

January 30th will see the global launch of the Blackberry 10 series smart phones. Much has been said about this device over the past year and how it would compare to its major rivals as many of the current Blackberry devices hardly hold a flame to whats out there in the market. I've owned a Blackberry for the past 2 years now, the 9700 Bold to be exact, honestly I think its one of the best phones made. The size, shape, design and capabilities of it is brilliant. Downside to the phone is obviously the battery life but ask any Blackberry user and they would tell you the same thing, another major downfall is the memory, not the SD card but the cache, the phone gets remarkably slow if accessing many applications, then the dreaded clock pops up not allowing you to do anything until it processes what needs to be done.

Blackberry's holding company RIM (Research In Motion) took a major hit in the markets last year especially in Europe and the USA. The advantage Blackberry had with its BIS service almost became null and void since data prices were dropped dramatically, allowing users to purchase other smart phones. Blackberry still did well in regions that still have high data prices, South Africa included but seeing that that was no longer a major draw card, something had to change.

With the 10 series it seems that this change has come and in a big way! No longer will having BBM be a stand out feature of the phone  and I'm hoping they've at least fixed up the processing speed problem, the last thing people would want is a slow phone, especially with Samsung, Apple and Nokia all entering the market with super fast processors and operating systems.

I had the opportunity to look at the Blackberry Z10 Alpha version, the size was similar to the iPhone5 and the OS was the one they used on the Playbook. The developer that was using it said the phone was pretty good but battery life was an issue, there has been a Beta release which differed a bit from the Alpha seeing an increase in size, so maybe a bigger battery?

Blackberry Z10 and X10

There are two phones in the 10 series being launched, the Z10 which is the flagship. A full touch screen phone with all the bells and whistles to compete with the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy's and the X10 which is a half and half, well more like 3/5th's and 2/5th's. The X10 is similar to the 9900 where it has both touch screen and a keypad facility. I like that they still keeping that trend as some people prefer using the keypad to type instead of the touchscreen.

Samsung Galaxy S3, Blackberry Z10 Alpha, iPhone 4
There are many videos online with reviews on the phone itself and so far it looks rather promising, many seem to think this will be Blackberry's "last hurrah" but if it can capture the market like it did before, how can it be the end? I have spoken to many Apple and Andriod enthusiasts, they all had good things to say about the phone but obviously in an indirect way, so generally speaking we have quite the phone on the way. I've been holding out on renewing my contract purely because I want to get this phone. Not to say I am a Blackberry fan boy, for a person that averages a gig a month on data, BIS comes really handy, especially with data prices in our country! Roll on January 30th and hopefully early release dates for the phone.

Monday Choon: DJ Naaldekoker feat. Goodluck - The Meltdown

If you read his name and thought "DJ what?", you wont be the only one. He is Jack Parrow's DJ who mixes the sick beat for the Belville rappers tunes but thats more hip hop and you wont associate him to dance. Why the weird name? Here is what he told News 24, "My real name is Jansen-Pierre Myburgh. I chose DJ Naaldekoker because I started as a scratch DJ, and scratch DJ's scratch records with needles hence "Naaldekoker" (Needle cooker) and it’s also Afrikaans for dragonfly". Anyway, its his music we're more interested in, The Meltdown features Goodluck who were phenomenal in 2012. The song is already one of the favourites on 5fm's charts and its fully deserved.

Q&A

1. Hot girls and hot cars go hand in hand, what ride would you like to see yourself in?
Well I have always loved an Aston Martin DB9 but recently I have been driving my dads Range Rover Evoque and that is pretty awesome too. My first car was a Mercedes Benz C class so there will always be a special place in my heart for that!

2. What sandwich are you most likely to make for me? and will it be toasted or plain?
It would be spicy chicken with caramelized onions and goats cheese on toasted herb ciabatta

3. What type of music gets your booty shaking?
I like all sorts of music but I must say I can be very cheesy and love pop songs that I can sing a long too:) Some of my favorite artists are; Shakira, Ricky Martin, Sting, Alanis Morissette, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi, Of Monsters and Men, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Santana, CCR... to name a few

4. Dream cover shoot?
Vogue or Cosmo

5. If given a choice, full time model or full time executive, what would you choose?
Well I could never see myself behind a desk all day I'm far to creative and need to do different things all the time! But being a freelance actress/dancer/model/make up artist I consider myself to be a brand and I am the CEO.

6. Everyone loves popcorn (well I think they do) whats your topping/ sprinkle of choice?
I love a crazy combination of butter salt, chives and astros:)

7. Anyone holding that hand yet? or is it available?
Sorry guys, I get married to the man of my dreams in Feb this year:)

8. Growing up you must have had someone you aspired to be, so who is your role model?
Growing up I drew inspiration from many different people not just one, I was very blessed to be surround by many amazing men and woman who have made me the person I am today.

NAIAS 2013

Boys will always like their toys and with the North American International Auto Show being the first major car show of the year, all eyes were cast upon the new models that were being released. Hosted in Detroit "Motor City", the show attracts large crowds from around the US and the world and in so many major car companies display the best they have to offer. Today's post I'll focus on the models that caught my attention the most.

Being held in the USA, means the local giants, Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford would want to headline the show but often in the past they have been over shadowed by the European counterparts. Not this year though as the Americans came packing, no doubt for me one of the biggest show stoppers so far has been the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
The 7th generation by the automaker, it takes over from the ZR1 as the latest in Corvette models. The design of the car is simply awesome, sharper lines harking back to the Shark design but keeping the hatch like look of the Stingrays of the past. The 6.2 litre V8 generates approx 450 bhp and with the perfectly designed aluminium frame it has even 50/50 weight distribution. The cabin is a complete change around from the past where by everything from previous models has been thrown out. Its more in line with today's technology with all the gadgets you'll expect to find in any luxury European sedan, it even has a full digital instrument display!

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray interior
Other notable models by American makers were the Ford Shelby 1000 series Mustang, the Dodge Viper SRT and the Lincoln MKC Concept. As usual the Europeans also came to make a scene but it wasn't the big super car boys that were making the noise but rather the Germans. Mercedes Benz and BMW have been going head to head in sales during the past year with BMW just edging them but the men from Stuttgart aren't waving the white flag yet. Last year they relaunched the A Class in a dramatic redesign to a sporty hatch, Detroit saw them unviel to the world the sedan version of it which is labeled the CLA. The sleek design of the car makes it look like a coupe even though it has 4 doors, thus making it a smaller brother to the bigger CLS. I personally love the design of this car as it does look like a smaller version of the CLS and since I cant afford one now, I'm hoping the CLA will be more in my price range.

Merecedes Benz CLA

Merc also took the opportunity to launch the latest E Class collection, normally they stagger the model release with the sedan, then the AMG variant followed by the Coupe and Cabriolet versions but this time it they were all display. Sporting fused kidney headlights and much to be desired front intake system the new E Class is striking in every way.

Mercedes Benz E63 AMG
BMW also had some neat tricks up their sleeve with the much talked about 4 series coupe concept on display, which if put into production will replace the 3 series coupe. However the biggest attraction on their stand for me was no doubt the M6 Gran Coupe, I am a massive fan of the Gran Coupe and hope I get to experience one so the M version of the car is just the cherry on the top. The car isn't for every ones fancy and some seem confused for its purpose. Its direct competition is the Mercedes CLS and the Audi A7, so its a niche model that wouldn't appeal to all but for those that it does, they love it!

BMW M6 Gran Coupe
Speaking of the Audi A7, the range topping RS7 was launched as well at the show. The sportback just got more sportier with the added body kit and bigger engine. The car for me lacks the certain something that the CLS and 6 series has but in its own right it is a brilliant car.

Audi RS7
Crossing oceans again, we head to the land of the rising sun. Toyota has always been one of the biggest retailers in the USA, with the Toyota Camry and Prius being the most popular in the family saloon segment so it came as no surprise when Lexus was launched all those years back it was a major hit with the locals. Having the quality and reliability of a Toyota coupled with the luxury one expects from a German car, it was a major winner. Lexus enjoyed good sales from most of its models, one of them being the IS, the latest model was launched on the 2nd day of the show and it is a stunner. When most people saw the concept last year, no one thought they would keep the eye catch grill. The dramatic lines and flowing molded body of the car is a visual masterpiece. Its really a production concept, the interior doesn't fail either with the cockpit mimicking that of the LFA. It also has a fully digital instrument panel and finally they got rid of that horrid digital clock which came straight out of a 1992 Corolla!

Lexus IS
Not to shoot down the Corolla as I would be left eating humble pie because the Japanese manufacturer shocked most of the motoring world with its Furia Concept. Based on what the latest Corolla would look like, the concept left many in awe. The design whilst not being the most dramatic is a major improvement on the bland designs in the past. Toyota although still topping sales know full well that Hyundai and KIA are breathing down their necks so it was obvious that they had to make drastic changes to appeal to the modern public. Whether or not the production version of the Corolla will be more watered down version of this it is yet to be seen but like the Lexus, I hope they don't do much.

Toyota Corolla Furia
That was my best picks form NAIAS 2013, next we await Geneva where Ferrari are due to reveal the F70 to the world. I cant wait for that!

Monday Choon: Eric Prydz - Everyday

The Swedish DJ/Producer Eric Prydz mostly known for his 2004 hit single "Call on me", which also had a rather interesting music video is my choice to kick off 2013's Monday Choon slot. His other most notable single was Niton which featured on the Tron soundtrack, his music is quite different to other EDM producers and unique in his own way. He doesn't churn out songs regularly but he still remains a big name in the industry, his last big hit was his remix of M83's Midnight City which still remains a favourite of mine, His latest offering is "Everyday", its been out for a while and has featured in many sets over the festive period, I like it and I sure hope you do! Enjoy!
