This track would be familiar to many as Martin as well as Matisse & Sadko have been dropping in their sets all summer long but without the vocals. The official release see's a melodic vocals providing by Barbz to complete this track. Released last week Friday, "Butterflies" is an epic festival type track which brings together the talents of Martin Garrix and the duo of Matisse & Sadko and they create something magical.

Ultra South Africa 2023

After 3 years the Ultra Music Festival returned to South African shores to mesmerize and thrill local electronic dance community. Cape Town and Johannesburg were treated to some of the best in international and local artists over Friday and Saturday with an unconfirmed record crowd for the Johannesburg leg. While there were many despondent comments after the final line-up was released, with the lack of headliner acts for the main stage especially, the ones who were named did not disappoint!

Local acts such as Kyle Cassim, Gold Fish and Grammy award winning artist Zakes Bantwini got the masses going on the main stage before the international acts took over. Gold Fish who have toured the world with their mixture of electric and live sounds, signed with Armin van Buuren's record label Armada have been entertaining crowds world over, and their set in Johannesburg was nothing short of world class.

Next up, that crazy Australian Fisher took to the stage with what can only be described as electric energetic performance that had the crowd jumping on their feet.  Dutch DJ Oliver Heldens got the groove on with his future house style deep melodic sounds before Swedish maestro Alesso played probably the best set of the night for me, kicking up classics like his remix of Pressure by Starkillers before ending his set with the iconic "If I loose myself Tonight" with One Republic which had the entire crowd singing in harmony. Ending the night on the mainstage was another Aussie, Timmy Trumpet. His hardstyle big room music took the crowd over 150 bpm as it was a rather raucous end to the night.

Resistance stage as always did not disappoint with Dane DJ Kolsch and Adam Bayer sending the crowds into pure ecstasy with their sets. I was a bit disappointed with the lighting and stage design for Resistance as I felt it was cut down a lot compared to the 2020 show. Being in an indoor venue there was so much more that could have been done in terms of lighting. Overall though, Ultra SA 2023 proved to be one for the record books with massive crowds, excellent organization and plenty of stalls for beverages, food and top up kiosks for the cashless wristbands. I'm glad to hear that the festival will be back next year on the weekend of March 1st, with shows confirmed for Cape Town and Johannesburg.

One sad thing to come out from the festival was the passing of Costa Titch who sadly passed away after collapsing on the Smirnoff Stage midset. Condolences go out to his family, friends and fans.

Monday Choon: David Guetta vs Benny Benassi - Satisfaction

French DJ David Guetta has been spoiling us since 2020 with his latest genre "Future Rave", its a fresh new take on electronic music from him and to be honest, I quite like it. It's build ups are great with high energy drops that instantly gets your blood pressure going. If you watched the sets from Ultra Europe and Tomorrowland, then you, like me have been probably waiting in anticipation for the release of todays featured track. David has taken Italian DJ legend, Benny Benassi's cult classic track "Satisfaction" and given it his future rave treatment and boy is it a banger of note! Played by most DJ's including the likes of Armin, Nicky Romero, Tiesto and others at the various festivals around Europe, it definitely got the crowds going wild. The track was officially released last week Friday on Spinnin' Records and we have it here on the blog for you to enjoy.

Monday Choon: Armin van Buuren feat. Maia Wright - One More Time

Trance legend Armin van Buuren has dropped an absolute fire track smack bang in the middle  of festival season in Europe. "One More Time" which dropped a few weeks ago, with the official music video being released on Saturday has been a hit since its debut and with getting rave success at Ultra Europe and most recently Tomorrowland this past weekend. It's a festival type track, an anthem of such that has a great feel good factor to it, on the vocals is Maia Wright and she keeps the energy going with her amazing sound, couple that with the rousing harmonies and euphoric beat drops from the track, its no wonder that it's getting the amount of airplay as it is. This track comes off Armin's upcoming album "Feel Again" so be on the look out for more from the Dutch maestro.

Ultra South Africa 2020 - Recap

This past weekend saw the largest dance music festival on the continent take place over two days in two cities. Over 50,000 Ultranauts descended upon both Cape Town's Ostrich Ranch and Nasrec  in Johannesburg. Having attended the Johannesburg leg of the event, I can say this years one superseeds the previous ones in terms of crowds, stages and line-ups. All four stages had packed out crowds with a range of International and local artists performing their hits. People were spoiled for choice, with a stage offering something for everyone. The Ultra App was a must this year, to help you keep tabs on who is playing where and at what time, making sure you didn't miss anything. Organisers have learnt well from the past and this years Ultra was one of the smoothest and seamless I've been to in the past years, massive props to the organizers and sponsors for pulling this off.

The main stage as ever was spectacular and came alive during the dark, International acts such as Dash Berlin, Steve Aoki, Afrojack and DJ Snake were highlights from there but South Africa's very own Black Coffee stole the show for me. It was his first time playing on the main stage and he really showed us why he is world renowned and so in demand. Resistance stage set up was amazing, with the over heard LED grid as well as the large visuals on the stage, couple that with some of the best deep house music by both local and international acts. Da Capo, Camelphat, Luciano were just some of the many who had party goers on their feet.

Ultra South Africa have already confirmed dates for next year, with Feb 26th and 27th being secured for the 2021 shows. If this years was anything to go by, you do not want to miss out on next years event!

Ultra Music Festival 2018 - Aftermovie

If there's one aftermovie I look forward to every year, it's definitely Ultra Music Festival's in Miami. The production and great editing by Final Kid Productions is next level, they encapsulate what the festival is all about and get you so engrossed that you feel like you were there and makes you want to buy tickets for next years festival. Essentially that is it's purpose as Ultra always launch the Aftermovie when tickets go on sale for the following years festival. With Ultra Music Festival 2019 venue being in jeopardy with the city siding with residents around the Bayfront Park area to ban the festival from taking place there next year, it is still unclear if a resolution will come about or Ultra will choose another location, but for now, lets just enjoy another great aftermovie.

Monday Choon: Swedish House Mafia are back!

ITS WAS TIME

There was plenty of speculation in the build up to the 20th Anniversary of Ultra Music Festival and finally, last night, closing of the weekend, it happened. Swedish House Mafia are back and from what we saw last night/ early morning, it seems they're here to stay. Axwell mentioned during their set that they've missed performing with one another and all three are friends, so it seems like Axwell and Ingrosso have settled their differences with Steve Angello and this is for the better of House music. The trio took the world by storm in 2008 till their eventual break-up in 2013 which saw them go their own way until last night. They've produced music that not only united people from various genre's of electronic music but also people simple never took interest in it all. So in spirit of this reunion, we don't have a single song for you today but the entire set from Ultra Music Festival Miami of Swedish House Mafia which featured a lot of their old music but with some great mash-ups and remixes.

Monday Choon: NWYR - Ends of Time

It's no secret that I am a massive fan of NWYR and in my honest opinion they were the biggest break-through artist of 2017. Even though they haven't officially released much of their work, their live sets are just something else. The Dutch duo who are better known under their main guise as W&W have been playing as their new alias NWYR for just over a year now, with one of their first performances at the ASOT stage at Ultra Music Festival in Miami, which is where they first played today's featured track. You could tell that this song mean't a lot to the do as when they played it, the emotion on both Willem and Wardt's faces showed it. It is a great track, full of energy, awesome build ups and a killer drop. Honestly loving the work coming out from NWYR and hope to see more in the horizon.

Ultra South Africa 2018 - Review

Celebrating it's 5th Anniversary in South Africa, Ultra Worldwide was bound to put on a music spectacular that would leave festival goers in awe of what they had witnessed. Having attended the Johannesburg leg myself, I can tell you first hand that not only did this years Ultra break records but it certainly set them for years to come!

On February 10, Nasrec Expo Center opened it's gates to over 32,000 revelers, it a set-up much bigger and better than other years, crowds had easier access to bars, food stalls and ablution facilities, also with the introduction of cashless systems again, it made buying refreshments and food all that more easier. There was however reports of long queues to enter the venue, with some people having to wait almost two hours to get in. Organisers have yet to comment on what the delay could have been caused by.

With 4 stages for attendee's to choose from, showcasing the various artists, international and local, people were spoiled for choice. With good reason though, the Main stage was the center of attraction to many. With LED Screens decorated with lasers, blinders, pyrotechnics and streamers, combined with the hottest DJ's in the world, would you blame anyone from not wanted to leave their spot? It all kicked off with the local DJ's, of home FeU and TimoODV were standouts, then came on the first International act, Carnage who did what his name says and got the crowd going with his hardstyle music. While Afrojack and Hardwell played great sets, the stand out for me had to be Armin. The man isn't rated as one of the best DJ's of all time for nothing. His set was a combination of music and lighting which got the crowd into a state of trance. He was also joined on stage in a surprise performance by Mr Probz, where performed their collaboration track "Another You" and "Waves". The night on the Main Stage ended with Axwell /\ Ingrosso, who captivated their crowd with some of their old Swedish House Mafia tracks as well as many of their new stuff as a duo. The stand-out was definitely their current hit track "More than you know" which had the crowd belting out the chorus.

.The Resistance stage was back again to please the many deep house fans that made the journey and it did not disappoint! This year saw the dance floor being moved into a new warehouse space at Nasrec which catered specifically to the house and techno community. Local artist which included the likes of Da Capo, DogStarr, Ryan Murgatroyd, TranceMicSoul and many more heated the floor up before the mega stars took to the decks. Local and global sensation, Black Coffee got on to raptures from the crowd before Dubfire and Eats Everything blew the fans away with their hypnotic performances.

"Ultra SA brings new surprises each year and this year was no exception. It also brings new magic each time we produce the show, and 2018 was the most magical yet. Speaking on behalf of the full Ultra SA team and sponsors, we are blown away by the support of the fans and industry and cannot wait to see what 2019 brings." said Shaun Duvet after the 48 hour music spectacular which took place in the two cities.

We will be releasing our very own after movie of Ultra SA 2018 soon, so be on the look out for it on our instagram page!

Ultra South Africa 2018 - Phase 2 Line up

Celebrating its 5th Anniversary in South Africa, Ultra is pulling out all the stops to ensure that next years event is going to be one to remember. Phase 2 line up was announced last week, and unless you were living under a rock, you should have heard the news by now but if not, no sweat, we got you covered here. In the official announcement video, along with phase 1 announced Dutch heavy weight DJ's Armin van Buuren and Hardwell, Ultra showed the likes of Afrojack, Axwell/\Ingrosso and Dubfire bringing up the international headliners as well as the return of the Resistance stage. Carnage see's a return to the country forming part of the international acts and a first time debut for Malaa.

At the Resistance stage, fans of the Deep House beats can enjoy the music of South Africa's most successful electronic music export, none other than Black Coffee. Along with him see's Dubfire on the stage as well, taking the audiences on a musical journey with their highly sort after sounds.

Cape Town's event takes place on Friday the 9th of February 2018 at the Cape Town stadium which was a firm favourite with event goers last year. While Joburg's Nasrec Expo Center hosts the event on Saturday the 10th of February for the 5th time as well.

Monday Choon: Cara Frew - Dance

We're bringing some local flavour this week as apposed to International artist that seems to be the norm in this segment. Cara Frew's career has skyrocketed over the past few years, she's performed to some of the biggest crowds locally and in the world, including Coachella. I saw her perform live at Ultra and Corona Sunsets Festival, her energy she has on stage is mesmerizing and her voice is nothing short of beautiful. She currently is based in LA where she's signed onto Sony records and recently debuted her new single Dance. It has been played for about a month now on the local stations and has been received really well. It's currently one of my favourite tracks at the moment so it only fair that I feature it on the blog. Enjoy!
